A tow truck driver, security guard, and lorry driver — claimed trial at the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court on Tuesday (July 7) to charges of torching three cars belonging to the wife of social activist Cikgu Chandra in Puchong.

The cars, worth an estimated RM80,000, were set alight in March.

00:01A tow truck driver, a security guard, and a lorry driver appeared at the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court on Tuesday,
00:08claiming trial to a single charge of setting fire to three vehicles belonging to the wife of social activist S.
00:15Chandrasigaran, better known as Chigguchandra.
00:18Prosecutors say the vehicles, a Perodwa Beza, a Perodwa Viva, and a Proton Ertiga, were torched at a house in
00:25Puchong at around 3am on March 10th,
00:28causing an estimated 80,000 ringgit in damage.
00:31A. Kumaran, 34, S. Kishin Nair, 30, and P. Surendran, 37, claimed trial to the charge, brought under Section 435
00:40of the Penal Code,
00:42read together with Section 34, an offence that carries up to 14 years jail and a fine if convicted.
00:48During the proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurfazlin Mahmad Zulhaznan suggested that the accused should not be granted bail
00:56as the offence is non-bailable and highly serious.
00:59However, if the court chose to offer bail, the prosecution proposed an amount of 10,000 ringgit for each accused
01:05with one surety,
01:07along with additional conditions.
01:09Defence lawyer Vinesh Segar, representing all three accused alongside co-counsel Danish Thayalan,
01:14argued for minimum bail, telling the court his clients posed no flight risk
01:18and had cooperated with investigators from the start of the probe.
01:22He said his clients are the sole breadwinners of their families
01:25and need to support their wives, children and parents.
01:28The judge ultimately set bail at 8,000 ringgit each with one surety,
01:33along with conditions including surrendering their passports and a ban on contacting witnesses.
01:38The case returns to court on August 7th for mention.
