Jacob & Tejay discuss if the World Cup will boost interest in soccer in America and tell Belgium to suck it over Balogun's Red Card reprieve.
Transcript
00:00Those are good. Those coupons for a free tee good in either East Wichita, West Wichita, or Derby.
00:06All right, TJ, let's talk a little. Let's talk a little soccer here.
00:10It is soccer. It is not football. It is field. It is zero. It is not nil.
00:14We've spent like an hour speaking about the World Cup, and Max has not played our soccer intro yet.
00:20The entire show. You have that on standby, Max?
00:23I feel like he has to have a button made for that by now.
00:26We're going to need it because Team USA keeps winning.
00:30Are you open wide for some soccer? Let's go. Let's go.
00:35What did we have yesterday? So we had Norway, Brazil.
00:38But I want to go back. Canada loses.
00:40It's been a while, yeah.
00:42France, Paraguay was great.
00:45I find you some sports hate, like my kids hate Paraguay.
00:51They do not like Paraguay.
00:54And I'm trying to explain to them, I'm like, guys, it's probably better if they win than France.
00:58And they're like, absolutely not.
01:00We don't like them.
01:01They remember back to the first game, and they picked that enemy, and they are dying on that hill.
01:05So that was a good outcome for them.
01:08Morocco looks awesome, by the way.
01:11I've been thinking that for a while.
01:13So we haven't had a show, though.
01:16Yeah, Canada went down.
01:18We haven't had a show since Argentino Cape Bear.
01:21Oh, yeah, that's right.
01:23I think that that's a top moment for me, and that that ending was incredible.
01:28That goal from Cabo Verde was unreal.
01:33Unreal.
01:34Unreal.
01:34That goal and Holland's goal, like, twirl thing that he did yesterday, when he just squared that one up,
01:44and then, like, makes it no emotion, does, like, a little twirl move at the end, and just walks off.
01:52And that dude is a Viking.
01:54He is wild to watch.
01:57It's been in Mexico, into Mexico, England last night, which was as intense a watch as any we've had.
02:07Just sitting there, we knew it.
02:09I mean, Mexico just took shot after shot.
02:12Well, not really shot.
02:13They couldn't even get a shot off.
02:14That kind of, like, so my inability to understand the true depths of soccer were on full display at the
02:23end of that game.
02:25Like, how can they not just get one in there?
02:29Like, to understand why England is so good and how they can do what they did last night, that's where
02:37soccer goes way over my head.
02:39You and I watch, and it's kind of how, and it makes sense, because I think about that as well,
02:44about whenever you watch, for a perfect example,
02:47we haven't spoke since I was at the round of 32 game in Kansas City on Friday.
02:52Columbia-Ghana was 1-0.
02:53Columbia scored 10 minutes in.
02:55And Ghana literally never had a single shot on a goal the entire game.
02:59It was just, it was, I mean, they did not play well.
03:02They didn't play well for one.
03:04And, like, the beginning of the game, they looked terrible.
03:06Then they figured it out, and they got a bunch of looks, like, in the box.
03:10And every single time, it's like they hesitated, panicked, tried to make an extra pass and turned it over, or
03:15just shot, and it was not a terrible shot.
03:17It wasn't a good shot.
03:18They played really bad.
03:19And then you watch that, and, you know, my, as I keep saying, soft brain, the smooth brain, excuse me,
03:28smooth soccer brain, sees that and says, yeah, Ghana played bad.
03:32And it has to be the same way as when you watch a NFL game and you watch the, whoever,
03:41blank, play against an awesome defense that has five turnovers forced.
03:46And we watch that, and we're like, that defense is so good.
03:50Yeah.
03:50Other people watch that and say, that quarterback sucks, right?
03:54Yeah, it is, like, and I, and so we're watching, and what did the, the, the, the announcer of the
04:01game last night said, this is the equivalent of a goal line stand in the Super Bowl, what England is
04:06doing right now.
04:07And I was like, okay, that helps, that helps me, because you're, you're seeing it, and you know that they're
04:12outnumbered, and you're just like, why can't they just send one in there and make it so noisy down there
04:20that something happens?
04:21That's what the Americans would do.
04:23I know how the Americans would play that.
04:25That's how they'd play that.
04:26That's why it's so wild and outrageous.
04:30And Mexico is similar, and it's what, it's how they gave up two goals.
04:33They got too aggressive, and a great team like England.
04:36In two minutes, those are crazy goals, too.
04:39In the goals, and you're like, whoa.
04:42Man.
04:42So that's, honestly, that's what worries me a little bit about America, just because I know the frenetic pace at
04:48which they play.
04:48I saw what happened against Turkey with a couple of mistakes, and I'm like, well, what's Belgium going to do?
04:54So it was, it was such a fun watch, though.
04:58And, and, and my family and kids, like, everyone is just so Team Mexico.
05:04You grow up in Texas, like, you're so close to it.
05:07You know how many, and we saw it even here in Wichita.
05:09You just know how many people are associated with that team, that country, that fan base, and you're like, God,
05:17just get one, please.
05:18Far more to me than the association with Team Canada.
05:22Like, I wanted Team Canada to win because they're our neighbors, but I'm not walking around seeing a lot of
05:27Team Canada jerseys, right?
05:29But Team Mexico's very ingrained here, and you're like, let's go, like, take down England.
05:34Let's get them.
05:35Ah, man, that was an emotional watch last night.
05:38It was.
05:39Jude Billingham might be the best player on England, and I can't figure that out yet.
05:43I feel like he's just as good as Harry Kane is, right?
05:46I think what Harry Kane did in the game before, when they were down, and he went and scored two
05:51in the second half, was more impressive than what England did last night.
05:58When England was down, and you were like, God, they might lose this.
06:04And Kane went in in the second half and found a way to score two goals.
06:08I thought that was, it was the Congo.
06:10It was the Congo.
06:11Yeah.
06:13Bellingham was just kind of right place, right time after Mexico mistakes last night.
06:17To me, again, amateur soccer brain here.
06:20Don't take that for anything.
06:22This is very stupid of me, but I'm going to throw this out here.
06:25People have been, we've had this conversation.
06:27I don't know if we had it on the air or not.
06:29But people are watching the World Cup, getting excited about it, and saying, I need to watch more soccer.
06:33This is awesome.
06:34I need to go pick a Premier League team.
06:37And American soccer fans, MLS fans, are saying, no, you do not pick a Premier League team.
06:42Go find the nearest MLS team and go root for them.
06:45Go root for Sporting Kansas City.
06:47I don't care that they're bad.
06:48You root for them.
06:49And when they're good, you get to say that you root for them.
06:52You don't get to say, well, I only watch Chelsea.
06:54No, that's not how this works.
06:56But how much money needs to be invested to turn the MLS into, because if this was the Olympics or
07:03the FIBA World Cup, every single player is a star in America, right?
07:08How much money would have to be invested?
07:10Because you've seen these contracts.
07:11They're unbelievable.
07:13They're crazy.
07:14Could you imagine a world where all these guys played in the same league?
07:17Because that's the one thing about soccer that's just so much for me to say, like, yeah, Harry Kane's awesome.
07:23You have to watch the German league to see him, right?
07:26You know, Jude Bellingham's awesome.
07:28He doesn't play in the Premier League, though.
07:30He plays for Real.
07:32Look, MLS right now, and it looks like, I don't know who the, I don't know who the, you know,
07:39who the, I can tell you who averages the highest attendance.
07:44And that's Atlanta, and has been for the last, like, five years.
07:49Seattle, we know.
07:50It's been Atlanta or Seattle every single season since 2009.
07:55Now, I don't know if that's because of the size of the stadium that they play in.
07:58Probably has something to do with it.
08:00But attendance for the MLS has gone up every year, just about.
08:05In its inception year of 1996, the average attendance across the league was around 17,000.
08:15Now, it is averaging about 22,000.
08:20So, you know, quick math on that.
08:24It's gone up.
08:25Attendance has gone up almost 23% in 20 years.
08:29And listen, I understand, and I know that, you know, I sound like a stupid soccer idiot when I'm making
08:34those statements about trying to get the MLS and everything, and it's never going to be what it is over
08:39there and stuff like that.
08:40I understand there is, I've read a lot of stuff about this, actually, about how the MLS is trying to
08:45stick themselves into that conversation.
08:48And it's going to be so hard because the MLS, I'm actually reading a book about this right now.
08:52Yeah, it's pretty good.
08:55They can't because of the way that it's structured because they're trying to make it like the NBA and the
09:01NFL.
09:01And it makes sense.
09:03There's salary caps.
09:04And in the Premier League, there's not.
09:06You can just go spend as much money as you want to spend because you can't.
09:09So, you want to come here?
09:10We'll probably lift.
09:12They should lift a cap in MLS.
09:14They've changed the rules now.
09:15If anyone can come in and bring in a bunch of great players, let them.
09:18They've changed the rule now.
09:19I can't remember what exactly they call it, but it's basically the way they got David Beckham.
09:22To the MLS of saying, you get one player on your team that you can just pay for whatever you
09:27want to pay.
09:28And I think they've since moved into like two.
09:31And that's how Messi came to the MLS.
09:33That's how Zlatan came to the MLS.
09:36He came over here and stuff like that.
09:38So, they're going to have to figure out a way eventually to get to a point.
09:43And I think that this World Cup, that's why I'm saying all this, is that this World Cup is going
09:46to do so much for American soccer.
09:48Not one, because it's going to make people care about Team USA.
09:52And two, I think that people are going to start caring about the MLS more.
09:54The MLS can't spend as much money as the other teams because people don't watch it that much.
09:59And again, attendance is going up.
10:01Do you watch the MLS on TV?
10:03No.
10:03Nobody knows how to watch the MLS on TV.
10:05It's so confusing.
10:06They don't even have a TV deal.
10:07It's on Apple TV streaming.
10:09And you have to pay for a special pass to get the game.
10:11It's too confusing to watch the MLS.
10:13You can watch Premier League on cable every Saturday, basically.
10:16I think that that's part of it, too.
10:18If America was, if Team USA was great, that's going to be the starting point because I think Americans may
10:27be more inclined to play in the MLS.
10:30You don't have to live overseas.
10:31You don't do all that stuff.
10:33I don't know that the money is ever going to get there with the Premier League.
10:36It probably won't.
10:37But I don't think it has to.
10:41It just has to find a way to be attractive.
10:44And right now, it's not even attractive to fans to watch.
10:47I think it's doing fine.
10:49I think the problem for us here forever, like when is the Premier League played?
10:58What time of year?
11:00I believe.
11:01I know that this year it's about to start.
11:03But I think it was altered because of the World Cup schedule.
11:06So that that's the problem for most of us.
11:10It runs August 21st through May 30th.
11:16So now, OK, you're going to watch.
11:18You're going to commit to Premier League, which you've said you do and you won't.
11:22But you say you will because I've tried this.
11:24I'll commit to the MLS.
11:25You're not the first person to try this of a soccer casual.
11:29I wouldn't even say I was a soccer casual.
11:31I love the World Cup.
11:32That's about it.
11:33And the Olympics, but whatever.
11:37I'll watch anything live, by the way.
11:39You can give it to me.
11:39If it's live, I'm there.
11:41I'm in.
11:41But that that's the time of year.
11:44So you're basically when do they play like Saturday mornings?
11:49Is that right?
11:50Saturday mornings in America, Saturday mornings.
11:53Yes.
11:54Well, whatever day it is yet for us.
11:55So, OK, you giving up college football.
11:58It's right in the middle of college football season.
12:00It's true.
12:00Giving up college basketball.
12:01Well, it's right in the middle of college basketball season.
12:04Giving up the NFL.
12:06No, you're not like that.
12:07That's the tough part.
12:09I think what's changing is probably more young people are making soccer their first choice,
12:18not their fourth or fifth choice like it would be for you or I like they don't play.
12:22But if you were telling me they played the Premier League in the summertime and I could watch games in
12:29what would be like prime time for us,
12:32or even if even if I was just OK, I'm going to just catch the games on on a weekend
12:38morning.
12:39That's fine.
12:39And there was nothing else there.
12:41Like it's only competing with kind of baseball.
12:42Well, yeah, I might be more inclined to do that.
12:45Maybe.
12:46If my kids love the team.
12:49We've got an official statement coming down with the 30 seconds that we have left in the show from the
12:53Belgian Red Devils.
12:54The Belgian national team has released a statement saying after learning through media reports of FIFA's decision to lift the
13:00automatic suspension of player Balagan,
13:02the RBFA sent a letter to FIFA requesting a copy of the decision explanation of the process that had been
13:08followed and setting out its position regarding the applicable regulations.
13:11As its only response, FIFA sent a letter to the RBFA stating that it considered this correspondence to constitute an
13:18appeal that a judge had been appointed
13:20and that the RBFA had only a few hours to complete that appeal.
13:24No information whatsoever was provided by FIFA.
13:27This is a really long statement.
13:29I'm not going to read the entire thing over the air.
13:31It sounds like they're they're SOL.
13:33I think that they're just complaining again and just saying that, yeah, we could have appealed, but we only had
13:39like two hours to do it.
13:40Can we can we just pause a moment?
13:42Sorry about your luck, Belgium.
13:45RBFA.
13:47Royal Belgian Football Association.
13:49But but our I know that's great.
13:53That's fantastic.
13:54There's going to be a lot of RBF when we kick their tail tonight.
13:59Go America.
14:00Balagan scoring four goals.
14:03We're on to the round of eight.
14:05We're up to four.
14:06By tonight, we're going to be at five.
14:07We're breaking the curse.
14:09Here we go.
14:10Suck it, Belgium.
14:12We're on to the baby
