The great southern town of Katanning is traditionally known for its booming sheep and grain industries, but a new player is about to enter the market. Investors are ramping an abandoned gold mine that could boost the workforce by hundreds and see billions in profit – but not all locals are on board.

00:02Mining for gold in the heart of sheep country.
00:05This Katanning mine site, dormant for almost three decades after low gold prices forced it to close in the late
00:1090s.
00:11That's currently being drilled at the moment.
00:13But there are high hopes for a massive return, amid its revival on the back of increased demand for the
00:18commodity and new ownership.
00:19We're mining approximately 140,000 ounces of gold per annum, that's the run rate.
00:24So at the current gold price of around $6,000, you're looking at over a billion dollars a year in
00:31gold coming out of the ground here.
00:33Local business owners excited by the prospect of increased patronage.
00:37I mean, I can't wait. We can't wait.
00:39The more population come, the more prosperity to come.
00:44But rebuilding the mine will require hundreds of workers.
00:47And that's a concern for some local farmers who fear it will strip the town's limited workforce.
00:51In a place like Katanning that our ag support is all based in town there.
00:58So they're the same people with the same skills that the mining industry is going to want.
01:03Osgold says the mine will employ about 350 people for the construction phase and maintain a workforce of about 250
01:10once the mine is up and running.
01:12The Shire keen to play a role in how the venture plays out for the community.
01:15Because obviously there's a fair amount of disruption to our community, we'd like to see this as a long term
01:20project.
01:21Ideally, what we would like to see out of this is some of those, I guess, investment into infrastructure that
01:27will give us a long future.
01:28The project is awaiting final financing and approval from the environmental regulators, which is expected later this year.
