00:01A flashy showpiece for a region searching for its economic future.
00:06The tourism campaign launched this year while the Arnhem Land Hub weathers a housing crisis.
00:12It's very expensive, right, so in terms of availability, it's zero.
00:18This $8 million housing development, financed by Nulamboy's traditional owners,
00:24already leased out to anti-government health workers.
00:27This is our own family money putting into reality for survival for the future.
00:34A large share of Nulamboy's housing is controlled by developing East Arnhem Land or DEAL.
00:40The same organisation behind Visit East Arnhem set up more than a decade ago
00:45to support small business in Nulamboy's post-mining future.
00:50250 local houses are owned and managed by DEAL
00:54and the non-for-profit funded by Rio Tinto and the NT government says it is reinvesting rents accrued
01:00into tourism campaigns and small business grants.
01:04But the NT government's chair of a group tasked with the post-mining transition
01:09says DEAL has too often prioritised a transient workforce for the few local houses available.
01:15I think they have probably broadened their remit a little too wide
01:20and need to focus in on what transition means for our businesses in that town.
01:26An immediate focus is for Rio Tinto to say when land can be handed back to traditional owners,
01:32more houses built and then the interstate inducement.
01:36I would like to have at least land tenure and asset ownership at least known
01:41and a decision made by the end of 2027.
01:45That gives an 18-month window to have a much greater focus then on economic attraction.
01:52And the next slide shows up.
01:52that you have a better job of the agency and who to make your best decisions.
01:54So that you can see the difference between the people and how to make an asset ownership
