A new report has revealed some people in social housing in Western Australia are turning down work, fearing they'll lose their accommodation. WA has the lowest income caps for social housing of any state in the country, prompting calls for it to be increased immediately.

00:02Trish Owen was relieved to enter social housing.
00:05I was homeless, I was a single parent and I had mental health challenges
00:09previous to being in this home.
00:12But she never expected to be there for more than two decades.
00:16I've got a cap on how much I can earn, which means that I limit myself
00:21in what I can contribute to the world because if I go over that
00:26then I will no longer be eligible for this type of housing
00:29and I could not afford private rental.

00:40Like I'm stuck and then the people who don't have housing are stuck.
00:43A new survey finding nearly one in two people in social housing
00:47or on the wait list had turned down work to stay under the income cap.
00:51The cap is $551 which is just above the disability payment
00:57or the job seeker allowance.
00:59It's nowhere near the minimum wage so it's really difficult for people.
01:05With more than 23,000 applicants on the social housing wait list,

01:15We'd really like government to undertake a review
01:19so that we've got some realistic income eligibility limits for people.
01:23Instead, the state government says it's focused on boosting social housing stock
01:28and overhauling how the wait list is prioritised,
01:32a change due to take effect in 2028.
