Rubio denies any Alaska deal with Russia, says US ready to help end Ukraine war

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday (June 25) rejected Russian claims that Washington had failed to honor an alleged understanding reached in Alaska on Ukraine, saying “there was no agreement” between the sides and stressing that the United States remains willing to help bring an end to the 4-year-old war. Russia has accused the United States of failing to follow through on what it described as an “agreement or understanding” reached in Alaska. Rubio declined to detail the proposal, but referenced publicly reported Russian demands, including that Ukraine cede full control of the Donbas region and the city of Donetsk.

00:00Tell me about Russia before you go.
00:01About who?
00:02Russia is accusing the U.S. of failing to deliver on quote-unquote agreements that
00:09or understanding that we had in Alaska.
00:12There was no agreement in Alaska.
00:14There was a proposal in Alaska, but there was no agreement in Alaska.
00:17If there had been an agreement, we would have had an end of the war.
00:19So, as I said, the President is prepared, and the United States remains prepared to
00:23play whatever constructive role we can to bring about, you know, an enduring end to
00:28this war in Ukraine.
00:30And which has been bloody, you know, 25,000, 20,000 soldiers killed every month,
00:345,000 a week, most of them Russian.
00:36So it's been debilitating for Europe, but especially for Ukraine, and for Russia
00:39increasingly.
00:41So we are prepared to step forward and play a constructive role if there's one for
00:44us to play, and bringing the parties together and bringing that war to an end.
00:48That's what the President's tried to do now for a year and a half, but there was
00:52no agreement in Alaska.
00:53There was a proposal made in Alaska, but it was never an agreement.
00:57By Russia or by the U.S.?
00:58I mean, it's the same thing you've seen publicly reported, right?
01:01I mean, Russia wants the entirety of Donetsk to be turned over to them, among some other
01:06things that they raised.
01:07But there was never an agreement.
01:09Had there been an agreement, there would have been an end of the war, and that's been the
01:11fundamental problem.
01:12Okay?
01:13All right, guys.
01:44I'll see you next time.
01:47I'll see you next time.
