A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck northeastern Japan, prompting train suspensions and highway inspections in affected areas. No tsunami warning was issued, no injuries were immediately reported, and authorities said no irregularities were detected at nearby nuclear facilities. The government also formed an emergency team to assess the situation and coordinate response efforts.
Tremors were felt several hundred miles away in Tokyo from the quake in the sea off Iwate prefecture on the main island of Honshu at 7:30 a.m.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the magnitude was 6.9 but later revised it to 7.2.
