00:00Yeah, yeah, yeah, sir.
00:02Brett Favre, great player, Hall of Fame career,
00:04but do we really need to show the top 10 Brett Favre games?
00:08Come on.
00:08John Madden's going to get really excited for the debut of a television show.
00:12He's going to get his Snuggie and his cup of hot cocoa,
00:16and that's it, man.
00:17He's not answering the door.
00:18If the phone rings, he's not picking it up.
00:20He's going to be zoned into this moment.
00:22This one's for you, John Madden.
00:27Brett Favre.
00:29Love him.
00:30I don't know how you don't love a guy like this.
00:31He's what epitomizes the sport, I think.
00:35That's right, Brett Favre is Brett Favre.
00:37Or hate him.
00:38Oh, my God, if I never hear his name again, I'll be better off.
00:41You wonder why I see a shrink.
00:43You wonder why I don't just drink one beer.
00:46It's because of Brett Favre.
00:47It's your fault, dude.
00:49Chances are you've probably done both.
00:51I always loved him as a quarterback.
00:53I loved his enthusiasm for the game.
00:56Yeah, I love it.
00:57Can you believe I pay us for it?
00:58His kid-like reactions.
01:01Look at Brett Favre coming off the field.
01:03He is so happy.
01:04But then he ruined it at the end with all his nonsense.
01:07It was never about me.
01:08It was about everybody else.
01:10You ruined it.
01:11You were great.
01:12And you ruined it.
01:13We're counting down the greatest games Brett Favre ever played in, whether he was the goat or the hero.
01:20The greatest Brett Favre games feature incredible comebacks.
01:24And the Packers score with 14 seconds to go.
01:28But also, he threw some of the most spectacular bonehead interceptions in the history of great quarterbacks.
01:34This is the cardinal sin for any quarterback thrown back across the grain.
01:38His ability to rise to the occasion in big moments, but also really disappoint you at times, kind of made
01:45him more accessible than most star quarterbacks.
01:47You didn't ever get that feeling about a Dan Marino or a Joe Montana.
01:50What they did was clearly so above what the common fan could relate to.
01:55Favre, you could see yourself in him every once in a while.
01:57You could see yourself being the screw-up like he could be the screw-up.
02:00Our countdown spans Favre's entire career.
02:03From his humble beginnings...
02:05This is the best thing that's happened in Green Bay in a long time.
02:08...to the peak of his stardom...
02:10Favre, touchdown!
02:12...all the way through to his storybook ending.
02:15I am officially retiring.
02:17All the way through to his storybook ending.
02:20I am officially retiring.
02:22All the way through to his storybook ending.
02:25I am officially retiring.
02:27But it all began, unexpectedly, one day in Green Bay.
02:33Number 10, Brett Favre's game of all time.
02:35His debut performance, 10.
02:38After a brief stint with the Falcons in 1991 and a few forgettable appearances in garbage time,
02:44Brett Favre would finally get a shot in his third game as a Packer.
02:49It was not going good for the old Packers at that time.
02:52We were 0-2, and our starting quarterback is laying in a pile on the field.
02:55And Mikowski is down and hurting, Max.
02:57Before Brett Favre, it was quarterback Don Mikowski who was expected to lead the Pack back to the promised land.
03:04Don Mikowski, he was the magic man.
03:05He was the guy in Green Bay.
03:07I don't think I've ever seen a more popular player disappear from the stage quicker.
03:13It's like the Wally Pipps story.
03:15It's very similar.
03:16If you get hurt and Lou Gehrig or Brett Favre replaces you, you better look for a new team.
03:23And then we got Brett Favre who was like raw, really raw, and under-practiced.
03:29And I'm going, oh my God.
03:31Oh my God.
03:32Here we go.
03:33Here's second-year quarterback Brett Favre out of Southern Mississippi.
03:36They just basically...
03:37Mikowski was gone the next year.
03:39Like, thanks for the memories.
03:42Thanks for the fun.
03:44Yeah, Favre's our guy.
03:45You're done.
03:48I didn't mean to rhyme.
03:56Field and Hope would work.
03:59And that's really what the Brett Favre...
04:03Lost two or three balls for seven.
04:04You live and die with somebody like Brett Favre.
04:07It's kind of like, hell, it's got to get better than this.
04:09You know, because I won't be around long.
04:11In those days, Favre was going to make as many mistakes in a game as he was going to have
04:17successes.
04:18Favre living and learning.
04:20He fumbled a lot early in his day.
04:22But he saves his best for last.
04:27Despite all of Favre's fumbles, he still had a shot at an improbable comeback.
04:32We get the ball back with a minute to go in the game.
04:34We had to go 80 yards.
04:35And he threw three of the most beautiful passes I'll ever see in my life.
04:39We called two-jet, all-go.
04:40That's four verticals.
04:42He ran at it, Southern Miss.
04:44And he threw the ball to Sterling Sharp.
04:46Sterling caught it, landed on his rib, broke his rib.
04:49He's our best receiver.
04:50He's got to come out of the game.
04:51So we put in Ketrick Taylor.
04:52I don't think Ketrick Taylor ever played except for this one play.
04:55Two-jet, all-go again.
04:57And Brett Favre threw a laser.
05:00It hit Ketrick Taylor for a touchdown.
05:02Ketrick Taylor has scored it.
05:05Oh, my goodness.
05:07Unbelievable debut for Brett Favre.
05:09That should be a lot higher than number 10.
05:11That was quite a comeback.
05:12He just kept getting better and better as this game went on.
05:17In 2008, on a rainy day at the Meadowlands, 38-year-old Brett Favre did something as a New York
05:23Jet that he'd never done as a Green Bay Packer.
05:27Fires a bullet.
05:28End zone.
05:28Touchdown.
05:29I was there at the Meadowlands the day he threw the six touchdown passes against the Cardinals.
05:33Yeah, I wanted him.
05:34I was happy when they made the move for him.
05:37Favre is a rock and roll legend.
05:39He's like a Bruce Springsteen.
05:41He's like a Mick Jagger.
05:42Favre flips it back to the corner of the end zone.
05:44Touchdown.
05:45The year before.
05:46Yep.
05:47And that Cardinals team went to the Super Bowl that year.
05:50So it was not like they were scrubs.
05:52Or Favre did something that he had done more than once.
05:56He threw an interception that cost the Packers a trip to the Super Bowl.
06:01The pass intercepted by the Giants at the 40-yard line.
06:04And the New York Giants are going to Super Bowl XLII.
06:07Two years later, Favre was back in the NFC Championship game.
06:12The number nine red bar game of all time.
06:16The 2009 NFC Championship.
06:20But he lost.
06:22What are the division?
06:26Welcome to a wild atmosphere at the Superdome.
06:29And welcome to the NFC Championship game.
06:32I'm astounded that isn't higher.
06:34Because, I mean, to me, when you're looking at noteworthy games of a guy's career.
06:39Let's come out with some piss and bitter.
06:40Get out of your ass.
06:41That game was a 40-year-old quarterback taking his team to the Conference Championship game.
06:47Having as great a year as he'd had in his entire career.
06:494-0-3.
06:501-2-3.
06:51Go.
06:52Fires.
06:52Caught.
06:53Touchdown.
06:55Yes, sir.
06:55That was a good team.
06:56Nice job.
06:57And if they win the Saints game in the playoffs, they're going to be a great team.
07:02He got beat up in that game like crazy.
07:05Obviously, the Saints game plan was to attack Brett Favre at all costs.
07:10They've gotten some knockdowns on Brett Favre and they knew they were going to have to do that.
07:14They hit him a lot and they hit him hard.
07:16Favre out of the shot.
07:17Oh.
07:18They almost carried him away in an ambulance that day.
07:21And he's writhing in pain.
07:22Back at the 47-yard line.
07:24I thought Favre was incredibly courageous during the game.
07:28Playing with a lot of stuff that I'm sure would have knocked other people out of the game.
07:32Brett Favre is getting a lot of pain.
07:33He's on the left ankle.
07:35His return is questionable.
07:39You turn the ball over in big games, you lose.
07:41Now it's Peterson who loses his head.
07:44There was a lot of drama in that game.
07:47For once, the turnovers were not all Favre's fault.
07:50I think they had four or five turnovers in the football game.
07:53Well, most of the turnovers.
07:58But we see Favre's interception more than we see all those other turnovers.
08:02Throws back across the middle and he's intercepted.
08:05An inexcusable gaffe.
08:07You're going to see Brett Favre as he rolls out and he just runs with it.
08:10Because he could have run for the first down,
08:12they could have attempted a mid-40-ish field goal and gone to the Super Bowl.
08:16And in some ways it was fitting that it was going to end that way
08:19in his last chance for a Super Bowl throwing an interception.
08:22It was the way he ran his whole career.
08:24Close, but really not close enough.
08:26Making decisions that any high school quarterback was taught never to make.
08:31This is the cardinal sin for any quarterback throwing back across the brain
08:35as you're rolling to your right.
08:36If he got off the mat and came back in off of that injury,
08:41and beat New Orleans in the Superdome to take the Vikings to the Super Bowl,
08:47that would have been a breakaway slam dunk moment.
08:51That would have been a top moment of his career, I think.
08:54The number eight Brett Favre game of all time, Super Bowl XXXII.
09:01Green right, 24 double go, first down, ready?
09:04The game opened up with Favre hitting Antonio Friedman for a 22-yard touchdown,
09:09and you just felt like it would be a wrong.
09:11Here's Brett going to the end zone.
09:12Back there is Antonio Friedman.
09:14Touchdown, Packers!
09:15It was perfect timing.
09:16The ball got there right at the nick of time.
09:19Half a second later, you might be looking at an interception.
09:22The beginning of Super Bowl XXXII was a microcosm of Brett Favre's career in its prime.
09:28Brett Favre entered that game at the height of his powers.
09:30He had won an unprecedented three straight MVP awards.
09:33MVP! MVP! MVP! MVP!
09:36He was in the middle of an MVP run where he won three straight.
09:39Anytime he had the ball in his hands, you felt like the Packers had a chance to win.
09:42Fresh off his first Super Bowl.
09:43Let's get this straight. He shouldn't have won that one.
09:47Barry Sanders was the clear best player in football that year, probably.
09:52When Favre and the Packers were heavily favored against John Elway's Broncos.
09:57They weren't the Chicago Cubs, but lovable losers when you look at John Elway and his career
10:00and having already lost three Super Bowls.
10:02This team is not better enough. They're not even good!
10:04As great as Favre was, Elway was greater.
10:06But he had not had a Super Bowl victory.
10:08And it was a game that the Broncos, you know, we need to win this game for John Elway.
10:12This one's for John!
10:17Elway, along with Super Bowl 32 MVP Terrell Davis, left the Packers in a seven-point hold
10:24with under two minutes to go.
10:26Get first! End the lead!
10:27I was absolutely expecting him to take them down because at that time of his career,
10:32it just seemed automatic.
10:34You did think Favre would have his second ring and really join that pantheon of Super Bowl
10:39winning quarterbacks.
10:40Here is Brett. Straight back in the pocket. Got some time. Comes up over the middle.
10:44Threw it badly.
10:45Well, he's human.
10:46When it didn't happen, you sort of said, yeah, this is a surprise.
10:50But there was another part of me that said, Brett Favre's going to be back in this game.
10:56Favre never did make it back to a Super Bowl.
10:59So our number eight game had a big impact on his legacy.
11:02There will be some people that think Brett's just a little notch below some of the other guys
11:07because he didn't win that additional Super Bowl.
11:10He's got one Super Bowl. That's awesome.
11:12So does Brad Johnson.
11:14So does Trent Dilfer.
11:15That's what it's all about.
11:16You know, that's pretty much how you're judged.
11:18The quarterback that won the Super Bowl, he should be given that credit.
11:21And I think Elway should certainly be given that credit.
11:24We're kind of a harsh sports fan society.
11:26What have you done for me?
11:28Tom Brady has that one loss on his Super Bowl legacy.
11:31Well, guess what? Montana fans say, huh, Joe never lost a game.
11:34So, yeah, it's a penal way to judge them.
11:36But, yes, it did damage his legacy.
11:38In Brett Favre's second full season,
11:41the Packers needed to beat Atlanta to be eligible for the playoffs.
11:44Here is a quick pass to the outside, starting sharp underneath,
11:47and Brett Favre has hit him with a touchdown.
11:50Two first quarter touchdowns gave Green Bay the lead.
11:54But by the fourth quarter, the Pack trailed with time running out.
11:59Favre looking, comes up over the middle to Chimura.
12:02He stumbled at the 42-yard line of the Atlanta Falcons.
12:05Favre drove the Packers into the Falcons' red zone,
12:08then used his final timeout.
12:11And I remember upstairs on the phones saying,
12:14he's open, and I'm going, no.
12:17And he starts running, and then he starts doing his thing, you know.
12:19Now Favre running to the right.
12:21Favre is on the run.
12:22Favre is down to sidelines.
12:24Favre, touchdown!
12:26And the Packers score with 14 seconds to go.
12:30Typical, no, no, yes, yes call.
12:34The best one I've ever had.
12:35What a way to get this team into the playoffs.
12:38The number seven Brett Favre game of all time.
12:42The Iron Man streak ends.
12:46The end of history probably came about
12:48in just the way that it was supposed to come about.
12:51The roof is collapsing in Minnesota,
12:53and there's chaos surrounding the game
12:55because we're supposed to play the Vikings in Minnesota,
12:58and we're at Ford Field in Detroit.
13:00So I go to the officials' meeting,
13:02and we exchange the deactivation sheets.
13:05I look down because until you see his name on that sheet,
13:09you're still thinking somehow, some way, he's going to play.
13:13So anyway, I'm looking at the sheet and Favre's names on it,
13:15and as a sign of the times,
13:17the first thing I do is take a picture of it and tweet it.
13:23I can't think of a single streak more impressive
13:26than Brett Favre's Iron Man streak.
13:29Just to be able to survive year after year,
13:32the hits that you take in the game
13:34should have ended before that.
13:36It should have ended before that.
13:38It should have ended when he couldn't
13:40throw the football properly as a member of the Jets,
13:42but it was all about him.
13:43Throws one up for grabs at the goal line,
13:45a loop and catches me!
13:47It's a more impressive two than you walk.
13:48Uh, considering he had...
14:03To look at all the other quarterbacks that have missed games during the time
14:06that he just kept going and going and playing at this incredible level,
14:10suffice it to say,
14:12it's one of the most amazing things in the history of sports, bar none.
14:15And I don't know how many losing seasons this guy had,
14:18but I think it's only two.
14:20That's another amazing accomplishment.
14:22But it became like a white noise machine.
14:24It's like, yeah, okay, Favre starting again.
14:26To the point where it's just blowing past your ear.
14:28Favre starting, Favre starting, Favre starting.
14:30Yeah, we get it.
14:31Yeah, we know.
14:32He's in there on Sunday.
14:33Hit and hit hard from behind.
14:35Brett Favre is down, writhing in pain at the 36-yard line.
14:39He had never stood on the sidelines in street clothes in his NFL career.
14:44That's what took some getting used to.
14:47Yeah, it was a tough way for him to go,
14:49but how many players go out on top, really?
14:51A lot of them retire old, beaten, maybe on the bench,
14:55and he did too.
14:56We had him the next week against Chicago.
14:59In Minneapolis, and he was out.
15:03Then I get a call on Monday morning
15:05that Favre has been upgraded from out to doubtful
15:08to maybe he's questionable now.
15:10I said, this guy's going to play.
15:11He threw his final career touchdown pass.
15:14Then he re-injured his shoulder.
15:18Favre's streak was over,
15:20but he still could do stand-up comedy.
15:24My buddy, I'll see if I can get a hamburger from him.
15:26As Brett Favre sits at home,
15:28they've got great hamburgers.
15:30And ponders his career.
15:32The only record that really he's going to be thinking about.
15:37I had one last couple weeks ago.
15:39Awesome.
15:40It's the consecutive games record.
15:41We take two weeks off and start getting ready.
15:46Favre's game of all time.
15:48His first playoff performance.
15:52In only his second season in the NFL,
15:55Favre led the Packers to the playoffs,
15:57a place they hadn't been in over a decade.
15:59Favre looks over the middle.
16:00Touchdown!
16:01That was still at the time
16:02where I think a lot of people were trying to figure out
16:04exactly what Brett Favre was.
16:06I hope we come away with one.
16:08I'll tell you.
16:09It'll be nice.
16:11At that point, we didn't really know what he was.
16:13At that point, it was kind of his coming out party,
16:15first playoff game.
16:16He was a young man who clearly had a lot of talent,
16:19had also thrown a lot of interceptions.
16:21Favre, especially Packers.
16:23Interceptions, 24 that year, led the league.
16:27Fans know the story about this young man,
16:30extremely aggressive,
16:31but too many turnovers.
16:36In one of his first games on a national stage,
16:39Favre gave the world a glimpse of his gunslinging style.
16:43He threw for three touchdowns,
16:45but also made a costly mistake late in the game
16:48that put the Packers in a 10-point hole.
16:50Brett steps up, fielding, intercepting,
16:52and it's going to be a touchdown, Jenkins.
16:55Brett Favre has a history of making great plays
16:57and making really boneheaded plays.
17:00Favre gets away with them because a lot of us go,
17:01oh, that's just Brett being Brett.
17:03He's just trying to make something out of nothing.
17:05Whereas if somebody else does it, you say,
17:06how could you possibly make that play?
17:08And that's part of the legacy of Brett Favre.
17:10You don't remember the mistakes.
17:12You remember the end of the game when he pulled it out.
17:17Oh, Favre looking now, Favre running.
17:19Come on, run it!
17:20He's going to throw it to the end zone.
17:23He's off my shot!
17:24Right over!
17:25Touchdown!
17:26Yes!
17:27That's how the legend of Brett Favre was born.
17:30He just was, holy cow, did you see that?
17:35Birthday party.
17:37You can say four words in Detroit
17:39and immediately ruin anybody's day.
17:41Sterling Sharp, wide open.
17:43I don't remember anything about that game
17:45other than watching him wide open going,
17:47no, not again, no.
17:49Favre kept that play alive.
17:51He was running around like crazy,
17:52had no idea where he was going to go with the ball.
17:55That play was designed for a 10- to 12-yard gain
17:57and hopefully a clock stoppage.
17:59Mike says, Brett, no matter what you do,
18:01if you don't like it, throw it away,
18:02but do not scramble.
18:05Now keep in mind, if we win this game,
18:06we get $8,000 bonuses.
18:10We've got to have this game.
18:11Do not scramble.
18:13Do you understand?
18:14Do you understand?
18:14Yes, yes.
18:15The first thing he does,
18:17he drops back to pass.
18:18Off he goes!
18:19The guy started running around the silver dome,
18:22and he threw the ball against the grain
18:23for a 60-yard touchdown pass.
18:25Touchdown!
18:26Green Bay leads!
18:28You could see it in slow motion on the sidelines.
18:31Like, there's another $8,000 playoff check right there.
18:34What a pass by Brett Favre!
18:36Thank God for Brett Favre.
18:38We've got a new screen on the porch because of that play.
18:43This could be a defining day for Brett Favre.
18:45That really started the Packers' run
18:48to greatness in the mid-90s.
18:50The Pack is back!
18:52It really lit a spark for the Green Bay Packers.
18:55For the Lions, it was just another one of those moments
18:57where you throw your head up and you go,
18:58I can't believe what just happened.
19:00The Lions were pretty solid,
19:02but the quarterbacks just never could step up that game
19:05and do the Brett Favre thing.
19:07Give us Brett Favre, history is rewritten.
19:11Wow!
19:12They say Brett couldn't do it,
19:13they say Brett couldn't do it.
19:14They can take the talent and keep their hands in Detroit.
19:16And now, the number five Brett Favre game of all time,
19:21the Retirement Saga.
19:23That's not a game.
19:26You think it's a game?
19:28No, I'm just kidding.
19:29Our number five Brett Favre game
19:31is the game he played with all of us.
19:34His on-again, off-again retirement game.
19:37Well, I think we all know why I'm here.
19:41It's a shame that Favre's great legacy in Green Bay
19:43will forever be tarnished with how he left.
19:44I am officially retiring from the NFL.
19:47I don't understand his problem with Green Bay,
19:49since he was the one that wanted to leave,
19:51and then didn't want to leave,
19:52and then wanted to leave,
19:53and then didn't want to leave,
19:54and then wanted to leave.
