00:00Todd Munkin did a full expose with the Baltimore Sun, and there were some fun Todd Munkin-esque quotes in
00:07them.
00:07No mention of aliens or ex-girlfriends, though.
00:09Yet. He's saving that one for after the first...
00:12Can you imagine Todd Munkin talking aliens?
00:15Yes, I could. And you know what?
00:17I might have to try and make it my mission during training camp to see if I could get him
00:21to talk some aliens.
00:21I know this is never going to happen, because the last thing they would ever want to do is pair
00:26me with Todd Munkin on anything.
00:28Me and Todd Munkin, just cracking some Coors Banquet.
00:32I think you guys would get along well.
00:34And just jabbering, just talking world stuff. I think I would have a lot of fun.
00:38I think he would have a lot of fun. I don't know anybody would find it interesting, but I think
00:43it'd be a real hoot.
00:44I mean, mid-conversation, he'd probably start cussing you out, but that'd be fun, too.
00:48Oh, that's fine. Yeah, I'm Hungarian. I'm used to that.
00:50Right.
00:50Yeah, all my uncles ever did is you'd think it's a normal conversation, and then all of a sudden you're
00:54like,
00:54wait, wait, what did I do wrong here? Yeah, that's why I'm so quick on my feet, by the way.
00:58You should know, Nick, what you did wrong.
01:00Yeah, and this was a great joke. We told it after Mama's funeral.
01:04How poorly can you handle the flashlight, which I know everybody's had if you've got a dad that tried to
01:10have you help working on stuff,
01:12but you never really experienced it until you heard curse words in Hungarian.
01:16But some of the quotes coming out, he's saying, I'm very difficult when somebody says, maybe you're brash or you
01:23can be hard,
01:23whether it's coaches or players, it's a hard business.
01:26And he also talked about him thinking he's authentic, but that maybe some coaches or players or whatever don't like
01:33that approach.
01:34Which I hate, absolutely hate, with authority, with a passion, when people say old school coaches don't work,
01:44or aggressive coaches or brash coaches don't work.
01:49Dan Campbell is one of those guys.
01:52I was just about to mention him.
01:53And he's not an anomaly, by the way.
01:55Just because they don't do press conferences the way Dan Campbell does, doesn't mean that they're not brash or demonstrative
02:03or demanding.
02:04Nick Sirianni, I think the guy's a bit of a space cadet.
02:08But the guy clearly is more of a demanding, aggressive head coach.
02:12Guys, you think the Harbaugh's are singing players' lullabies?
02:15I don't think they are.
02:17It's just their public personas might be a little different.
02:20And the reason why I say that is, listen, if you go 0-16 this year, good luck for Todd
02:25Munkin to try and keep 0-17,
02:28because it'd be weird if you went 0-16.
02:30You could go 0-16.
02:32That's true.
02:33And then you get that last one and real sense of accomplishment.
02:37But no, I mean, you can go, if you go 0-17, it's going to be hard to keep a
02:41locker room.
02:42Doesn't matter if you are Vince Lombardi, come back from the grave,
02:45or it doesn't matter if you're Todd Munkin or anybody else.
02:48But beyond that, the coaches that I have seen failed.
02:53Either had no business being NFL head coaches, meaning they knew football,
02:58but they just didn't have the right mix of personality and knowledge.
03:01And it's an odd mix you have to have of a lot of different things.
03:05I think of Pat Shermer.
03:07I think of Freddie Kitchens.
03:09They're opposite ends of that spectrum, but neither guy really belonged to be a head coach.
03:14The guys, now beyond those guys, the guys that I've seen fail,
03:20it's been people who losing changed you.
03:25Hugh Jackson.
03:26Guys, I think Hugh Jackson, if his second spot had come at a spot where they were going to win.
03:32I think what happened is the second they started losing at that level,
03:38Hugh's weaknesses became magnified.
03:41And I think Hugh changed with the pressure of losing and being associated with that level of losing.
03:46That's not entirely on Hugh.
03:48And your overselling ultimately ended up what lost you any and all credibility.
03:53Yes.
03:54Trust me on this one, Nick.
03:56Mike Pettin, year two, I think was a guy who losing changed fundamentally how he interacted with his players.
04:04And also, that was just a dog.
04:06What happened to him was dog bleep, and we can say that.
04:08Now with 10 years hindsight.
04:10And with Kyle Shanahan leaving the way he did.
04:13I mean, it's just, you know, Johnny, that whole thing was a mess.
04:16But, like, I don't look at Todd Munkin and think, okay, this is a 60-year-old guy.
04:23If they start the season 1-8, I don't think he's going to change with that.
04:28I think one of the benefits of hiring a guy that's 60 years old that has been through a myriad
04:35of different—in college, in the pros, as a coordinator, positional coach, who's been fired before, and on different staffs have
04:44been fired.
04:45Like, I think this guy is kind of equipped to do this because he has a wealth of worldly experience,
04:52and he has seen people fail around him.
04:54And he knows this is his one chance.
04:57Like, I just would be shocked if, like, the number one Cardinal sin you can't do—the reason why Dan Campbell
05:02started out as a laughingstock for the first year and a half while they were losing,
05:08and the thing that allowed him to turn the corner and right the ship there and finish strong in his
05:14second year, which helped him avoid getting fired,
05:16and then they used that as a launching point his third year where they actually got back to the playoffs,
05:20is because he didn't change who he was.
05:23And I just—I look at Todd Munkin, and I really do think, like, listen, you might not win because you
05:30might not have the players, and you might only get one year.
05:33I don't know.
05:33I can't forecast how this is going to go.
05:35But in terms of his style of coaching, I think he understands you can be brash, you can be blunt,
05:43you can be whatever, as long as you also know how to say you're sorry.
05:48Or as long as you also know how to take accountability and leadership for that.
05:52Players know how to sniff out phoniness, okay?
05:55One of the reasons I love hard knocks so much is you really can, if you know what to look
06:01for when you're watching that series,
06:02because it is a very sanitized—or it has become a very sanitized year-by-year look at a team's training
06:10camp.
06:11But if you know what to look for, you can tell what's legit and what's fake.
06:16I remember watching that Lions season of hard knocks, and I was like, man, this guy makes me want to
06:22run through a brick wall for him.
06:24But also, at the same time, I wonder how much staying power this is going to have, this schtick that
06:29he's doing.
06:30And it wasn't schtick.
06:31That's just him.
06:32Robert Sala, the Jets, okay?
06:35Oh, thank God, the Aaron Rodgers—that was the whole hard knock season, was how happy that they had Aaron Rodgers
06:42there.
06:43And their season—once Aaron got hurt, the season fell apart.
06:46Well, yeah, you never built a team.
06:48It was all about Aaron Rodgers.
06:49Conversely, that same year here in Cleveland, the Browns went through five different quarterbacks.
06:54Kevin Stefanski, that year, actually built a team.
06:57And so they were able to overcome all that adversity.
07:00And so you're right.
07:01I mean, you know, people in general, when it comes to leadership, they want authenticity from their leaders.
07:09They don't want to be sold a bill of goods.
07:12They don't want to be lied to.
07:13They don't want to be performed to or told what they want to hear, okay?
07:18They want that authenticity.
07:20And look, whether you like it or not, Todd brings an element of authenticity.
07:26I think one of the areas where Kevin struggled—I would tell you guys off the air all the time just
07:31what a hilarious guy Kevin Stefanski is.
07:33But then you get him in front of cameras and microphones, and it puts everyone to sleep, and he doesn't
07:40tell you anything, and he doesn't open up, and he doesn't let you in.
07:44And I think that that's one of the biggest mistakes that Kevin made when he was here because he wasn't
07:48a dummy.
07:49Did he—now, do I agree with everything he did as head coach?
07:51No.
07:52Do I think he deserved to be fired?
07:53Yes.
07:54But at the same time, like, I think that if Kevin was more authentic publicly—I mean, go back to the
08:01clip.
08:01Remember the locker room?
08:03Real quick, even the players, I think, felt like he could be inauthentic.
08:07Yes, because remember the one clip where Kevin said—and the Browns put it out on their social media, and Kevin,
08:13after a win—I forget which one, but he was like,
08:15have I ever lied to you?
08:17And the look on Miles Garrett's face in the background, his eyes got real big, and then he rolled them
08:23and turned and kind of had a little bit of a sly smirk, like, yeah, you have, right?
08:29I mean, that little two-second snippet, I picked up on that on social media.
08:35I know some other folks did, too.
08:36But, like, yeah, that goes to when you're inauthentic, you're not going to get the most out of your people
08:44when you're a boss, whether you're a boss, a CEO, a coach, I mean, a teacher.
08:51Like, you have to be authentic and real with people.
08:53If you're not, they're going to sniff it out, and you're not going to get the most out of them.
08:56We do have a little bit of news here.
08:58Ryan Grigson returning to the Browns as senior football advisor.
09:02He, of course, was here from 2020 to 2021 as the senior football advisor and senior personnel exec as well
09:11back in 2017.
09:12So a little bit of Browns news there.
09:15I have no idea what it means, but I'm sure it's only good things from here.
