00:00Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebolo has said the state government will set up special court for criminal proceedings in line
00:07with the existing laws for suspected secret cult members and kidnappers to be conducted within two or three weeks maximum,
00:14and if anyone is found guilty and sentenced to death accordingly, he will sign the death warrant and bring the
00:20condemned criminal or criminals to popular Ring Road area in Benin City for public execution so that such action will
00:28serve as deterrent to others.
00:30The governor who probably have a good working relationship with one of the former governors of the state that started
00:36the recent execution of condemned criminals,
00:39Adams Oshomhole made this known on Thursday when he visited the headquarters of the Edo State Command of the Nigeria
00:46Police Force wherein some suspected kidnappers allegedly behind the shooting and abduction of a woman at a popular vegetable market
00:54along Airport Road in Benin City last Sunday were paraded before the governor and the press.
01:00According to the governor, I will set up a special court to try cultists and kidnappers within two or three
01:06weeks and if found guilty, I would have no regret to sign their warrants,
01:10they would be executed at the Ring Road for others to learn a lesson, don't take my simplicity for granted,
01:16for the record, the last time death warrant was signed and condemned criminals executed in Edo State,
01:22took place around 6am on December 23, 2016, few weeks after the then governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki took
01:31over power and was then still in good working relationship with ex-governor Adams Oshomhole.
01:37Three death row inmates were executed by hanging, namely, Ogbomero Omeregi, Apostle Ijean, and Mark Omisohotor and the execution took
01:47place at the Oko prison of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
01:51The inmates had originally been sentenced to death by military tribunals under the robbery and firearms decree during the era
01:58of military rule in Nigeria.
02:00Godwin Obaseki carried out the executions despite condemnation from human rights groups, such as the Legal Defense and Assistance Project,
02:08led up, who thus petitioned the governor for a stay of execution, saying,
02:13These earmarked prisoners were sentenced by military tribunals under the robbery and firearms, special provisions, decree 1971 as amended, in
02:23which there was no right of appeal.
02:25We have filed an appeal pending at the Court of Lagos seeking order that these prisoners have right of appeal
02:31under the 1999 Constitution.
02:34Death penalty is not universally prohibited but the second optional protocol to the United Nations International Covenant on Civil and
02:42Political Rights on Prohibition of the Use of the Death Penalty
02:46asks state parties to amend their laws to abolish death as sentence for crime.
02:50Not all states have ratified the protocol, to sign a treaty does not bind the state until it is ratified,
02:57Nigeria has not signed it,
03:00it would be recalled that before the 2016 last execution of condemned criminals in the state,
03:06the immediate past and first execution in Edo state since Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999 occurred on June
03:1524, 2013,
03:16when former Governor Adams Oshionhole signed the warrants to hang four inmates,
03:23Jima Ejiofor, Daniel Insofa, Oseren Windu Aguokan, and Richard Aguagoo, at the Benin City Custard.
03:30It was a double victory for the Nigerian North American diaspora community last week as the Yugola and Omeregi families
03:36celebrated two standout scholars,
03:39Miss A. Girogane Miracle-Ugola at York University and Miss Ivie A. Marianne Omeregi who studied at Brock University,
03:46graduating with first-class honors from the top Canadian universities,
03:51as the milestone achievements were anchored by a massive cross-border comrades reunion party that drew family,
03:57professionals, and community leaders from across Canada and the United States.
04:01The academic festivities officially commenced on June 12, 2026, at the York University Graduation Ceremonies in Toronto,
04:10where Miss A. Girogane Miracle-Ugola achieved a monumental milestone by graduating with first-class honors in computer science.
04:18Miss A. Girogane Miracle-Ugola, daughter of prominent human rights activist,
04:23Reverend David Ugola and diaspora figure, Mrs. Ngozi Ugola, clinched first-class honors in computer science.
04:32Her feat was celebrated by attendees as a masterclass in determination, intellectual grit,
04:38and a shining example for women in STEM fields.
04:42Mrs. Ngozi Ugola said her daughter,
04:45A. Girogane's outstanding degree is the culmination of years of intense dedication, discipline,
04:51and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
04:53Friends and family at the reunion party described the scholar as exceptionally resilient,
04:59focused, and intellectually driven, saying,
05:02she distinguished herself in one of the most competitive fields on campus.
05:07Adding, as she transitions into the professional space,
05:10she is poised to make significant waves in technology, innovation, and global digital transformation.
05:17Sharing the academic spotlight was Miss Ibi A. Marianne Omeregi,
05:21daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
05:23Steve Omeregi, who graduated with first-class honors in nursing from Brock University.
05:30In recognition of her stellar character, academic record, and community impact,
05:35Omeregi was also awarded the prestigious Spirit of Brock Medal,
05:39a high-level distinction celebrating her campus leadership and commitment to service.
05:43The double milestone brought together notable diaspora figures and community pillars,
05:49including civil society leader comrade David Ugola, Jude Mofunai and his wife,
05:55Edna, engineer Richard Amadei and his wife, Barbara, surveyor Effig, and the Fossa Akinjide Kiyodeisere.
06:02Following the formal university ceremonies, the Omeregi family hosted a grand reception in Toronto
06:09featuring vibrant music, exceptional hospitality, and intercessory prayers led by engineer Amadei.
06:16The event transformed into a true reunion of comrades,
06:19as guests traveled across several Canadian provinces and U.S. borders to stand in solidarity with the families.
06:26We give ultimate praise, honor, and glory to God Almighty for His abundant grace,
06:31guidance, and favor throughout this academic journey, the families said in a joint statement.
06:37These achievements serve as shining examples of what focus and discipline can accomplish.
06:43We are immensely proud as our daughters step into their respective professional careers.
06:48According to the renowned global human rights activist, Reverend David Ugola,
06:54the atmosphere on the campus was vibrant and inspiring as proud parents, family members, and friends.
07:00Barely 48 hours after a serving police officer on May 25, 2026 at Uelu area of Aguida Quarters in Benin
07:08City,
07:08Tiergasa resident to death, Matthew Okubo, a tricycle rider who is also said to be an ex-police officer of
07:15an elderly age,
07:16a more devastating tragedy was apparently averted on May 27, 2026 at the Samuel Obamudia Stadium
07:24during the 2026 Children's Day celebration when some security operatives used pepper spray on school children
07:33who came for the celebration, an action capable of causing death but the chief medical director,
07:39head of specialist hospital, Dr. Anthony Njoku denied and dismissed the claims that about five children died
07:45as a result of the incident, and the Edo command of the Nigeria police force in a press statement failed
07:51to state
07:52if there was any death casualty or not, but stated that four persons including the seller of the pepper spray
07:58chemical substance
07:59have been arrested and detained in connection with the Children's Day incident, adding that,
08:04the policeman who caused the death of the tricycle rider has been in detention waiting to be arraigned for possible
08:10act of murder,
08:11this, our research study shows that the less lethal weapon of chemical substances like tear gas and pepper spray
08:18may be seen as an act of deliberate murder or attempted murder if used on a closed range, enclosed environment
08:25like Hall,
08:26big or small because the chemical substances from our assessment are meant only to be used on a long range
08:32open air outdoor spaces
08:34where people have alternatives means to run and leave the contaminated areas and in line with global standard
08:41on the use of the chemical substances, tear gas is never meant to be used on vulnerable populations
08:47or individuals with medical conditions, as international bodies like the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights,
08:56OHCHR and health organizations warn it can cause permanent injury, severe complications, or death,
09:02in addition, the chemical causes instant airway constriction that can trigger fatal respiratory failure in people with asthma or COPD,
09:11a severe risk that prompted the American Thoracic Society, ATS to call for a total moratorium on its use,
09:19because, simultaneously, the intense physical stress can induce cardiac arrest in those with heart disease,
09:26as documented by Physicians for Human Rights, PHR, and according to strict deployment standards from Amnesty International,
09:34infants and young children face significantly higher risks because their developing lungs breathe faster,
09:40and heavy gas vapors settle near the ground, pregnant individuals face severe risks of premature labor or miscarriage,
09:48a danger highlighted in field reports by National Nurses United and Reproductive Toxicology data published by the National Institutes of
09:57Health, NIH,
09:59also, the elderly suffer prolonged tissue damage due to a reduced physical ability to flee,
10:05and finally, the American Lung Association warns that people with eye conditions, especially contact lens wearers,
10:12can suffer chemical burns and permanent vision loss from trapped toxins,
10:16though legally, while the Chemical Weapons Convention, CWC permits domestic law enforcement usage,
10:23the UN guidance on less lethal weapons explicitly dictates the police operations must give special consideration,
10:30or no state governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulam may have given a clearer picture
10:35and addressed some fundamental issues in the press release issued by the Nigerian Army on Saturday
10:41that caused mixed reactions among members of the public,
10:44especially Borno youths under the umbrella body of Borno South Youth Alliance,
10:49Bosya who had condemned the military for saying in the press release that its men rescued 360 out of the
10:56416 women and children
10:59held hostage by the Boko Haram terrorists based on intelligence-driven efforts that made the terrorists to flee
11:07and abandoned their victims upon citing the superior power of the men of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, AFN,
11:15with some of the terrorists arrested, but, the state governor, Babagana Zulam while speaking during his assessment visit
11:22to Pulka community on Monday, said, 434 victims out of the total numbers of people kidnapped early this year
11:30in Ingosh community by the Boko Haram terrorists have regained freedom, specifically stating that,
11:37357 captives walked free in the latest coordinated effort, other captives have been released in phases over the preceding months,
11:45bringing the total number of freed captives to 434, this,
11:49We have reported that youths in Borno state under the umbrella body of Borno South Youth Alliance,
11:56Bosya has insisted that the federal government of Nigeria under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tanubu
12:03did nothing to secure the release of the 416 women and children held hostage by Boko Haram terrorists
12:11for more than 90 days they were taken into the bush since March 2026,
12:16Also, the youth group dismissed and rejected the report of the Nigerian Army
12:21who had alleged that its men rescued 360 out of the 416 people held hostage through intelligent-driven efforts,
12:30saying, they have an audio record of the conversation they had with the Boko Haram terrorists
12:36on Friday, June 5th, 2026 before the Boko Haram terrorists decided to release the captives willingly,
12:43adding, if they paid ransom, they should come out and tell Nigerians,
12:47which we have the full details if ransoms was paid or not.
12:51As Senator Ali Ndume automatically started thanking President Bola Ahmed Tanubu,
12:56Is there something Nigerians need to know that is hidden?
13:00It may be recalled that we have reported that barely a day after President Donald Trump of the United States
13:07of America,
13:08the USA announced the killing of Abu Bilal al-Mennuki,
13:11the second in command of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria,
13:15ISIS in a joint operation with Nigeria soldiers in Borno state,
13:20a new video of the abducted 416 women and children in Boko Haram captivity has been released
13:27in addition to a gory video earlier released by the terrorists wherein they beheaded almost six men
13:33who the insurgents said tried to escape among the kidnapped victims.
13:37This had led to public outcry and demonstrations.
13:41But according to Punch newspaper,
13:43protesters are reportedly denied the rights to protest in Mediguri,
13:46the Borno state capital, saying,
13:49the army reportedly deployed tanks and heavily armed personnel to filling Polo,
13:54the venue of the recent planned protest,
13:56forcing the demonstrators to withdraw,
13:59quoting Samayla...
14:00...possers who are hung there doing,
14:01bringing you the news in a more digital way.
