00:15Grace and peace to you all in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.
00:22Wow, it's wonderful to see you all here today.
00:26Today, I've been reading in the Bible recently, in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy,
00:37the story of the people of Israel on their journey out of Egypt, through the wilderness,
00:47and finally into the Promised Land.
00:51And this particular part of the Old Testament, we have a great advantage with it,
00:59because Apostle Paul actually tells us what we should be learning from it.
01:06So let's quickly look at 1 Corinthians chapter 10, where Paul does just this.
01:17And he says, 1 Corinthians 10 and verse 11,
01:47Now, just before that, he lists some of those things.
01:54He says,
01:55We shouldn't lust after evil things, as they lusted.
02:00We shouldn't become idolaters, nor should we commit sexual immorality, if some of them did.
02:07Nor should we tempt Christ, nor should we complain.
02:13And he goes on, then, in verse 12.
02:17Therefore, let him who thinks he stands, take heed, lest he fall.
02:27Now, another way of putting that is, when you're reading about the people of Israel and these mistakes that they
02:35made,
02:36these things they did wrong on their journey,
02:39don't be proud and think, that would never happen to me.
02:45It says here, if you think you stand, take heed, lest you fall,
02:49because no temptation has overtaken you, except such as is common to man.
02:56And what the people of Israel went through on their journey was a set of temptations which are common to
03:05man.
03:06Everyone experiences these types of temptation, and we mustn't be too proud when we read about what appears to be
03:16their great foolishness.
03:18But the good news is, it says, verse 13,
03:23God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able,
03:30but with the temptation will make the way of escape that you may be able to bear it.
03:37So, when we're reading in the Old Testament about this journey of the people of Israel
03:44and all these sins, these problems they went through,
03:48we have lesson and we have an encouragement.
03:53A lesson not to do the same things that they did,
03:58not to fall into those traps,
04:01and an encouragement that God will provide the way out, the way through.
04:09So, let us pray as we go into the message.
04:15Lord Jesus Christ,
04:17we thank you for your word.
04:19We pray that today you will illuminate in our hearts wonderful things from your written word.
04:30Speak to us that we may be able to apply it.
04:34In Jesus' name we pray.
04:38And the people of God said,
04:41Amen.
04:42Amen.
04:43So, we're going to take as an example today
04:48the issue of complaining.
04:51That was one of the ones that Paul mentioned there in 1 Corinthians 10.
04:56And this is probably the most common and prevalent thing we see
05:02in the people of Israel,
05:04particularly as they're journeying through the wilderness
05:09on the way to God's promise.
05:12And I'm going to take one example,
05:15which is in Numbers chapter 20.
05:18So, we're going to read in Numbers chapter 20,
05:22if we can find our way there,
05:25from verse 2.
05:27I think there were at least 10 examples
05:32where the people of Israel complained.
05:36So, when you read something like this,
05:39you're quite right to think,
05:41haven't I read something like this before?
05:43This sounds quite familiar.
05:45And this particular case
05:47had to do with a problem with drinking water,
05:52a lack of water.
05:53And I think it's about the third time
05:55they'd had that specific problem
05:58and complained about it.
06:00And every time up until now,
06:03God has proved faithful
06:05and has seen them through
06:06and God has been glorified
06:08and they have been blessed.
06:09But they seem to have
06:11kind of collective amnesia.
06:15They forget God's track record.
06:19So, let's just read it.
06:21Numbers chapter 20 from verse 2.
06:23Now, there was no water
06:28for the congregation.
06:31So, they gathered together
06:35against Moses and Aaron.
06:41Now, this is not a very encouraging start
06:45to this story.
06:48The fact is there.
06:50They had a shortage of drinking water.
06:53As I said,
06:54this is not the first time
06:55they'd experienced this.
06:57God had always seen them through.
06:59But when they were coming
07:00to bring their complaint,
07:02they gathered against Moses and Aaron.
07:07And it says in verse 3,
07:08the people contended with Moses.
07:11They came already
07:13with an aggressive stance.
07:16They'd made their mind up
07:17that they were against Moses and Aaron.
07:22And they spoke saying,
07:25if only we had died
07:26when our brethren died
07:29before the Lord.
07:32Now, I'm not sure
07:33they really meant that.
07:35They were probably exaggerating.
07:38But they were in this
07:39negative frame of mind.
07:42If only we died
07:44when our brethren died.
07:45Why have you brought up
07:48the assembly of the Lord
07:49into this wilderness
07:51that we and our animals
07:53might die here?
07:56And why have you made us
07:58come up out of Egypt?
08:01Interesting, isn't it,
08:03their language?
08:03I think they've forgotten
08:05that God's glorious deliverance.
08:07They were all rejoicing in it
08:09because they were groaning in Egypt.
08:11And now their perspective
08:13has changed
08:13and they're saying,
08:14you made us come
08:15into this awful wilderness
08:17to bring us to this evil place.
08:20It's not a place of grain
08:23or figs or vines
08:24or pomegranates,
08:25nor is there any water to drink.
08:27So Moses and Aaron
08:30went from the presence
08:32of the assembly
08:33to the door
08:35of the tabernacle of meeting
08:36and they fell on their faces
08:38and the glory of the Lord
08:41appeared to them.
08:44We'll leave the reading there.
08:46That is what happened.
08:47Now, the people
08:49could have simply brought
08:52the facts to Moses
08:54saying, look,
08:56we're short of water again.
08:59Please go to God
09:00and ask him
09:02for this miraculous supply.
09:04He's done it before.
09:05Please go to God.
09:06But they didn't just bring the facts.
09:09They brought a negative conclusion.
09:13They came and said,
09:15you brought us here to die.
09:17You made us come here
09:19to this evil place.
09:20There's nothing good
09:21about this place.
09:22They came not just
09:23with the facts,
09:24but with a negative conclusion.
09:28And that's the first lesson
09:30for us,
09:31brothers and sisters.
09:33If we took time
09:35to compare
09:35what Moses did
09:37when he brought
09:38his complaints to the Lord,
09:40what Elijah did
09:41when he brought
09:42his complaint to the Lord,
09:43yes, they were honest.
09:45Yes, they said
09:46how difficult it was.
09:47Yes,
09:48but they brought the facts.
09:49They didn't bring
09:52a conclusion.
09:53They left
09:54the conclusion
09:55to God.
09:57So the first lesson
09:58is
09:59when you have
10:01a complaint,
10:03just bring
10:04the facts.
10:06Don't bring
10:08your conclusion.
10:11So,
10:12brothers and sisters,
10:13can you say
10:14to your neighbour,
10:15if you don't have a neighbour,
10:16say it to me
10:17here in the studio.
10:19When you have
10:22a complaint,
10:26just say
10:28the facts.
10:32Don't bring
10:33your conclusion.
10:37And that
10:38is the first lesson
10:39for us.
10:40Now,
10:41why
10:42did they do that?
10:44That's a simple question.
10:46why did they find
10:48themselves
10:48in this position
10:49that
10:51they were bringing
10:52a negative conclusion
10:53to God
10:54rather than just
10:54the facts?
10:55And I think
10:55the reason
10:56is simple.
10:57They were
10:58focusing
10:59on their
10:59problem.
11:00They were
11:01not
11:02focusing
11:03on God
11:04and
11:05his
11:05track
11:06record.
11:08And you know
11:08what happens
11:09when you focus
11:10on the problem?
11:10it gets
11:12bigger
11:12and bigger
11:13and bigger
11:14in your mind.
11:17It reminds
11:18me of something
11:19I learned
11:20when we were
11:21learning about
11:21electronics
11:22and they
11:22call it
11:23a feedback
11:25loop
11:26where
11:27the output
11:28of a circuit
11:29feeds back
11:30to the input
11:31and it goes
11:31round and round
11:32and round
11:33like this.
11:34And I think
11:35we all know
11:35what happens
11:36with that
11:36when it happens
11:37with sound,
11:38when you have
11:38a microphone
11:39close to
11:40a speaker
11:40the sound
11:42goes round
11:43and round
11:43and you get
11:43this howling
11:44noise coming
11:45out.
11:46And you know
11:47our hearts
11:48are like that.
11:49If we
11:50focus on
11:51the problem
11:53and we
11:54don't take
11:54it to God
11:55to take
11:55the facts
11:56to him
11:56for him
11:57to bring
11:57his conclusion
11:58and we
11:59don't listen
12:00to God
12:00and bring
12:00his word
12:01in
12:02but we
12:03just have
12:03our own
12:04negative
12:05thoughts
12:06about the
12:06problem
12:07going round
12:07and round
12:08and round
12:09it increases
12:10it's a spiral
12:12it gets worse
12:13and a big
12:14squeal
12:15comes out
12:16and that's
12:17exactly what
12:18happened
12:18with the people
12:19of Israel
12:20here.
12:22Their
12:22complaint
12:25to Moses
12:26was
12:27unjustified
12:29and exaggerated
12:30but it came
12:32because they
12:33were focusing
12:34on the
12:35problem.
12:36now
12:37God
12:38has
12:39given
12:39us
12:39instruction
12:41to help
12:42us
12:43to avoid
12:44this
12:45particular
12:46trap
12:46and
12:48we can
12:49read about
12:49this
12:49in the
12:50book of
12:50Deuteronomy
12:51chapter 4
12:54so I'd
12:55like to
12:56turn now
12:56to Deuteronomy
12:58chapter 4
12:58and just
13:00read
13:01verse
13:02verse 9
13:05only
13:06take heed
13:09to yourself
13:10and
13:12diligently
13:13keep
13:14yourself
13:14lest
13:16you forget
13:17the things
13:18your eyes
13:19have seen
13:20and lest
13:21they depart
13:22from your
13:22heart
13:23all the
13:25days
13:25of your
13:27life.
13:28Moses
13:29is reminding
13:30his people
13:31here of
13:32the great
13:32things that
13:33God has
13:33done
13:35warning
13:36them how
13:37easy it
13:38is to
13:38forget it
13:39just like
13:40they did
13:40when they
13:40were complaining
13:41about the
13:42water in
13:42the story
13:43that we
13:43just read
13:44and he
13:45says take
13:46heed to
13:47yourself
13:48diligently
13:49keep
13:50yourself
13:52what does
13:53that mean
13:53that means
13:55keep
13:55your
13:56focus
13:56on
13:57God
13:58that
13:59requires
14:00taking
14:00heed
14:01it
14:01requires
14:02diligence
14:02because
14:03the
14:04problem
14:04will
14:05shout
14:05loud
14:06to
14:06you

14:07situation
14:07will
14:08shout
14:08to
14:09you
14:09but
14:10you
14:11need
14:11to
14:11keep
14:11your
14:12focus
14:12on
14:13God

18:03promised

18:08pomegranates

18:10wonderful
18:11but
18:12they
18:12were
18:13not
18:14ready

18:16land
18:16they
18:17refused
18:17to
18:18go

18:18because
18:18of
18:19fear
18:20and
18:20unbelief
18:21so
18:21God
18:21said
18:22no
18:23I'm

18:24wait
18:24for
18:24this
18:24generation
18:25to
18:25die
18:25out
18:26and
18:26I'll
18:26take
18:26the
18:26next
18:27generation

18:28and

18:32be able
