00:00K&C Masterpiece right here on 105.3 The Fan.
00:04It's time for your Dallas Cowboys news of the day.
00:11And we will start with this.
00:13The Dallas Cowboys are off today after what was no doubt a grueling, grueling couple of OTA days, Monday and
00:24Tuesday.
00:25Work so hard, they needed the day off today as mandated by the collective bargaining agreement.
00:31It's good that they bargained for that because those last two days were tough.
00:36Tomorrow, no doubt, it's going to be a just brutal practice as well.
00:41And Coach Schottenheimer is supposed to speak to the media tomorrow, I assume, about how tough their practices have been.
00:49And pajama camp, as Dan Campbell calls it.
00:52Alec, will you be locked in on the press conference tomorrow?
00:58I'm going to be hanging out with Travis Jankowski.
01:01And the World Series trophy, I've been told, is going to be making an appearance as well at Hawaiian Falls
01:08in Mansfield.
01:09Dude.
01:10But I will have my phone with a speaker with the Odyssey app, of course.
01:13That is a smart way to do it.
01:14The Odyssey app's a fantastic way to listen to the 105.3 The Fan.
01:17I will add this, though.
01:19I know the World Series trophy, I've never seen it carried out and set on to the things.
01:23It's just always there whenever I arrive.
01:25And they're like, you can't even get this close to it.
01:27They're like, stay this far away from it.
01:29But you can stand next to it, kind of.
01:32There's no way they would let Jankowski take that down a water slide, right?
01:37Can you ask?
01:38I'll try.
01:39I'll give it my best shot.
01:40It's just a piece of metal.
01:42Manfred would be like, go for it.
01:45He'd be like, do it a couple times.
01:46Let Alec do it.
01:50That's what we're hoping happens tomorrow.
01:52If there are enough people chanting, maybe they will give in.
01:55But the other thing I wanted to add was last night, Kevin, when they brought out the Stanley Cup,
02:00it just made me realize how cherished that trophy is.
02:05It really is.
02:05How beautiful it is and how cool of a job it would be just to walk around and carry that
02:10thing everywhere.
02:11That would just be a cool job.
02:13Back to you, Kevin.
02:13I absolutely agree with that.
02:16Now, I know I was being sarcastic about the importance and physicality of OTAs.
02:21Oh, you weren't.
02:22You love OTAs more than anybody.
02:24Nobody cares about OTAs more than you.
02:27Yes, and one of your best players is not there.
02:29So if they're really important.
02:31But I guarantee you, here's a question tomorrow.
02:33Oh, what do you think about George Pickens not being there?
02:35Oh, you know, we've been talking with George every single day.
02:37He knows exactly what we're doing.
02:39He's working out on his own and, you know, blah, blah, blah.
02:42He's been thrown with Dak.
02:43Yeah, I can almost guarantee you to a word that will be the answer.
02:48But that right there shows you the lack of importance of OTAs.
02:51One of your best players is not there and everyone's like, eh.
02:53What if Ryan Flannoy wasn't there?
02:55Then I would be like, you are pulling a Jacoby Brissett and I think it's going to backfire on you.
02:59What if Marquez Valdez-Scantling didn't show up?
03:04How much would that affect his roster spot?
03:06I think it has the exact same effect as the fact that he's there.
03:10That's so mean.
03:12Ouch, John.
03:14So let's talk about that.
03:17That might be too far.
03:18I'm sorry, Mr. Valdez-Scantling.
03:21I just think that your addition to this team has been vastly overrated by some people.
03:25But I'm sure you're a great dude and I hope it works out.
03:28Has it been underrated by me and Alec so far?
03:32You know what?
03:33I might have fallen into your group think where I've underrated it because people overrated it.
03:40So let's just point out, does he have a shot to maybe kind of sort of be the fifth receiver?
03:47I guess.
03:48Potentially.
03:48Yeah.
03:49Yeah.
03:49I mean, he's definitely got to beat out Jonathan Mingo.
03:52If you think that's a massive move, then rock on.
03:56I hope you're right.
03:57We'll talk about that at another time.
04:00Hopefully not.
04:00We can definitely die.
04:01All right.
04:02So, I'm sorry.
04:04That's why.
04:05That was unnecessary.
04:07You know what?
04:08It's not Friday.
04:09I would like to ask for forgiveness from Marquez Valdez-Scantling.
04:14Shout out Friday.
04:14At least two of those comments were unnecessary.
04:19Now, let's talk about an extension for a Steelers player and how it could make a difference for the Cowboys.
04:25I know you're like, hold on.
04:27What do you mean?
04:28So, Nick Herbig, that's what I'm going to go with.
04:32He signed a four-year, $100 million contract.
04:39What's interesting about this contract specifically is he got $42 million guaranteed.
04:46He is the first non-quarterback ever to get a $100 million contract without starting an entire NFL season.
04:54Oh, really?
04:55So, bravo.
04:56Good for him.
04:57A lot of projection there.
04:59But what is more important than that for just potential Cowboys, something to look at,
05:06is what does this do to the spot of Alex Heisman?
05:11And I think that's a question in general.
05:13And I know this is a player that, look, if you're at least going to kick the tires and look
05:17into something,
05:18is this not the player you would be interested in?
05:20Yeah, I just, I don't know exactly what, like, the value is going to be.
05:25The Steelers are actively listening to trade offers for him, though.
05:29And they aren't, like, aggressively shopping, but they're like, hey,
05:33we would be interested in seeing if you would like to acquire this player from us for something.
05:39His contract, base salary, $14.5 million and $15.27.
05:44$15.5 million and $27.
05:45And that's what it would be.
05:47Reasonable value for a linebacker.
05:49And that's what it would be, because you're not going to be on the hook for the restructure or the
05:53signing.
05:54So, think about it like this.
05:56Two years, $30 million.
05:57If for any reason it didn't work out for you, the dead cap hit is only $5.6 million after
06:03that.
06:03So, it is not a major financial investment.
06:07You would have to do a little bit of wiggling to make it work for your cap,
06:12but I feel as though you could accomplish that.
06:15The way I looked at it is, I think it was John Owenwell, most of the offseason was like,
06:20I would love Herbig.
06:22We can call him Herbie if you want to.
06:24The G's kind of sound, sounds like a Y.
06:26I kind of do.
06:27But he was like, this guy fits exactly what I want.
06:30I want this kind of dude on the outside that can do a lot of these different things.
06:34Alex Highsmith, in 2022, had 14.5 sacks.
06:37Last year, had 9.5.
06:40He's had 7-6 in that time being, but he can play across.
06:43He can play all over the place when it comes to that spot.
06:48He can fill it up on the tackles as well, but he can play a variety of positions for you,
06:53but also get the pressure that you'd like to have off the edge.
06:57And this is a dude also that comes from a very well-disciplined defensive structure that I like.
07:02You want guys that have that kind of experience.
07:05He's 28 years old, has a couple years left.
07:07He's not 30 with no years left on his contract, so he's 28 with a couple years left on his
07:14contract.
07:14Just in time to be done with that and move on whenever maybe your defensive coordinator is done with you
07:21and moving on,
07:21because at some point Christian Parker is going to be like, I'm a head coach now, guys.
07:25He's that good.
07:26And you're still looking for depth at some of these positions and high-level starters at some of these positions.
07:33And when you start thinking to yourself, okay, is this going to take up a progress-stopping position?
07:39You discussed this a lot yesterday.
07:43This team does not have the leeway to say, we're going to hope a player turns into a stud.
07:52The best thing to do with quarterbacks, if you have the ability to do it, let them have the clipboard
07:58for a year.
07:59Wouldn't you love that your rookie first-round pick gets involved in your defense,
08:04but also doesn't get exposed by the NFL because he's not necessarily ready for it yet?
08:10At that position.
08:11Gets a year under his belt and all of a sudden becomes a stud.
08:14I don't think he's going to be T.J. Watt right out of the gate,
08:17but I think that your rookie first-round pick, Malachi Lawrence, is going to have some really good opportunities in
08:25front of him.
08:26But if there's a better player in front of him, take advantage of the better player.
08:30So can I ask you a question about another player and where he fits with all of this?
08:36Okay.
08:36Not necessarily in the exact same spot.
08:40Does James Houston still have a spot on this team?
08:45Because I was kind of thinking about the depth chart and looking at, like, contractually, it's not an issue.
08:54And that's one of the reasons I think he would have a spot on this team is minimal cap hit,
08:59like $1.1 million.
09:00But where does he fit in the rotation of this team?
09:07Who needs Micah?
09:08We have James Houston.
09:09Yeah, that was said, and you—
09:12There was one game when it felt like that came true.
09:15I feel like you stand by that right now.
09:17I think you've stood by that and gone, hey, go look at the numbers.
09:21He makes 1 40th of Micah Parsons.
09:25Do you think Micah's 40 times as good as James Houston?
09:28Jeez.
09:28Maybe you do.
09:29Let's look for a minute at your left-out side linebackers,
09:33Rashawn Gary, Malachi Lawrence, Maris Leofile, and Isaiah Land.
09:37Some people loved Isaiah Land.
09:40Remember that?
09:40They were just like, he's going to be a stud.
09:41And you're like, okay.
09:42It's the trap we fall into every year, and I've fallen into this trap for sure.
09:46You talk about and argue for a player that's going to be so important,
09:49and then he's fourth string maybe.
09:52Yeah.
09:52And then you look at the other side, and you got Donovan Azaraku,
09:56James Houston, Sam Williams, and Tyrus Wheat.
09:59I still love the ability to add some players in the mix.
10:04James Houston is a, from everything we saw last year,
10:09he was a situational pass-rushing outside linebacker, and that was it.
10:13Azaraku showed that he got better at the run game throughout the season,
10:18but his best quality was his pass-rush and pass-rush-down situations.
10:25I don't think that, I think, Kevin, he's a backup,
10:28but I think Sam Williams has more potential in him than I do James Houston.
10:36So I think you keep him, and you do everything you can to figure out ways
10:40to get him onto the field.
10:41Okay.
10:42But if you add another player to this mix,
10:44that does take away some opportunities for a James Houston in the conversation.
10:49I think he definitely has a place in the rotation, but they don't have a war daddy per se at
10:58the moment.
10:59And I don't know that they're going to try and add one at the moment either.
11:01Yeah, and so I guess I just keep thinking about it from the perspective of,
11:05obviously, salary cap-wise, it doesn't do anything for you,
11:08but I wonder, like, since you were talking about some of those people,
11:12like, does it slow down the opportunities for Williams or Lawrence,
11:18or even if you want to throw in Overton or something like that,
11:21that maybe you have higher expectations for their future,
11:25although I guess Sam Williams probably kind of falls into that group.
11:29He's about the same age as James Houston.
11:32Do you care about that, though?
11:34I'm being serious about this.
11:36Looking at this team and saying,
11:39does it slow down the progression for them?
11:43I do on some of the players just because the way the NFL has gotten now
11:49is the second that you draft, let's just say, Lawrence and Overton,
11:53the clock is ticking, right?
11:54And you've got four years of Overton, five years of Lawrence
11:57at a relatively cheap price.
12:00And I just want to, like, you see so many baseball teams succeed
12:04on those arbitration guys or pre-arbitration guys,
12:07like, playing way under their salary.
12:09And I think that the Cowboys front office can't compete at the same level
12:13as the rest of the NFL.
12:14So sometimes I do default to those young players because I'm like,
12:19hey, you're going to make nothing.
12:20And the Rams seem to be a, here's the positions that matter us.
12:24Because for the longest time, Broaddus has told us it's quarterback,
12:27guy that gets to the quarterback, guy that protects the quarterback.
12:30Right.
12:30Well, the Rams are telling us it's quarterback, guy that gets to the quarterback,
12:33because Aaron Donald was one as well, and cornerback.
12:37Jalen Ramsey, now Trent McDuffie.
12:39So they're saying those are the three most valuable pieces.
12:41We are willing to spend money there and not willing to spend money elsewhere
12:46because we're going to hit on these cheap pieces,
12:49Puka Nakua being, you know, not the first round overall,
12:52making all this ton of money kind of guy.
12:54Jared Verse wasn't making a lot of money either.
12:56But I think the Rams just have a fundamentally different idea, right?
13:00Like, so they think, we can win in the next two years.
13:04Let's screw the cap in 28, 29, whatever.
13:07Or are they screwing the cap?
13:09Because they're telling you, we're not going to pay these other guys.
13:12Sure.
13:13But we're willing to pay these positions and these stars
13:15because they're the top five player at that position.
13:18I think with the way they've set up a couple of contracts,
13:21it does have the potential to kind of screw their cap.
13:24But you're right.
13:25They've already planned for, maybe that means you let this person go,
13:28this person go, or then again, do you care if you want another Super Bowl?
13:33Where it feels like every single year the Cowboys are like,
13:37hey, I hear you, but do you know in two years how good we'll be salary cap-wise?
13:42Do you know how good we'll be in four years by taking this exact approach?
13:45And I'm like, I don't care.
13:47I don't care about your salary cap or your value.
13:49Yes.
13:50I care about, do you have the talent on the team right now to win this year?
13:54Go all in to try to win a Super Bowl.
13:56Maybe not this season, but like next season, go all in, try to win a Super Bowl.
14:00And if that means you're going to be terrible in 28 and 29,
14:03at least you gave it a damn shot.
14:05I've seen plenty of terrible Cowboys teams,
14:07but they didn't always come off the back of a Super Bowl hopeful.
14:11It's kind of that feeling of always, and listen, I loved the draft this year.
14:15I really do like the draft and I'm hopeful that it's good.
14:17But it kind of is the feeling of we're always trying to build it the way that Jimmy did,
14:22using all those draft picks to build a dynasty.
14:25Sure.
14:26And sometimes, I don't know if there is a real dynasty right now.
14:30The Rams aren't a dynasty.
14:31They just keep rebuilding themselves every few years into something.
14:35And they have the quarterback to do it,
14:37and they're probably going to go trade for Joe Burrow later and say,
14:41you know what, because quarterback matters.
14:42I can see that.
14:43But then again, like you pointed out with the NBA,
14:48there's so many different, such a variety of ways that it's been won lately.
14:52And I know the Chiefs had their dynasty because they had the quarterback.
14:55They had a guy that could get to it.
14:57They had a couple of other pieces.
14:58That was it for them.
15:00The building team is always difficult, but whenever you are the Cowboys,
15:04their philosophy is let it grow into something.
15:07But what if those things, what if those prospects don't grow into it?
15:10Then you have to supplement somehow.
15:12And they aren't willing to supplement.
15:14Facts.
15:14We're the KNC Masterpiece.
