Seth and Sean discuss the Texans fully guaranteeing WR Nico Collins' contract for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
Transcript
00:00So we know that there was a rumor floated out there that teams are going to be calling or were
00:05calling the Texans to just check on the availability of Nico Collins because as the report was, and I apologize
00:11to whoever reported this, I think it was Jordan Schultz actually.
00:14Jordan Schultz I think might have had this where it was Jordan Schultz, now that I think about it, who
00:18said that teams are going to be calling the Texans or have been calling the Texans because Nico Collins is
00:23perhaps due an adjustment to his contract, which still has two years left on it by the way.
00:28He signed a three-year extension two years ago, but he still had a year left on his deal, so
00:33we've got two years left on this one.
00:35He was set to make a little under $21 million this year and exactly $21 million next year, something like
00:41that, around $21 million both years.
00:43And when Nick Casario was asked about it, by the way, Nick will be on with us a week from
00:47today on June 3rd, probably his last time on with us before the summer vacation, but when Nick was asked
00:55about this at a press conference,
00:59of some sort of trading Nick Collins, which I expected him to say.
01:03He said it was idiotic or something like that.
01:05Well, he called the CJ ones moronic.
01:06I know that.
01:07The CJ rumors, he said, the CJ Stroud room, he said, that's moronic to trade CJ Stroud.
01:12Yeah.
01:13He was equally unmoved by the rumors of Nico Collins.
01:21So not only is Nico Collins not getting traded, he got paid more money yesterday.
01:26No extension here.
01:27They're just basically guaranteed.
01:29It's pretty simple.
01:30They're guaranteeing the last two years of his deal.
01:32They were not, those years were not fully guaranteed when he signed them.
01:35They are now.
01:36And they added on eight, nine million bucks.
01:40Nine million bucks added on to 2026.
01:42So he's now making 29 million, $8 million added on to next year.
01:46He'll make 29.8 million in 2027.
01:49If he has another season, like he's had the last few seasons, there'll probably be a contract
01:53extension for him coming before next season.
01:56But this, this gets him kind of in the neighborhood of the top 10 wide receivers.
02:02He's still not a top 10.
02:03It's still, in terms of AAV.
02:05He's not redoing it altogether.
02:06They're just getting more money.
02:07Yeah.
02:08Yeah.
02:08He had said, by the way, he said, we're not trading Nico Collins.
02:11Whoever reported it or whatever information they had, they can shove it.
02:14They can shove it.
02:15That's what it was.
02:16They can shove it.
02:17So obviously they're not trading Nico Collins.
02:19Yeah.
02:20But I guess the only kind of little, I'm, I don't like the looks of those teenagers in
02:27front of the convenience store vibe I get with this is, is that, all right, it's cool.
02:33It's with Nico.
02:33So at the same time, my longstanding philosophy has always been, Hey, go ahead and it's early.
02:40Well, they still have time on their contract, but the, the deal has got to be that, but don't
02:45come asking for an extension one or two years later.
02:48Let's, let's wait until there's another year left on your deal.
02:51And that's how we'll do it.
02:52Because then that sets the, it keeps things nice and concise.
02:56I mean, the, the best example of it is the way Pat Mahomes has operated.
02:59Um, they haven't tweaked Pat Mahomes contracts since he signed is however long ago, but, um,
03:05and as a result, he's like the 14th highest paid quarterback.
03:08So I'm not, it's not anything that I'm screaming about or anything like that.
03:13It's just that it is, it's that first step into sometimes uncomfortable situations on
03:18teams where when you start having success and you've got multiple really good players
03:24on your team, it's impossible to not have a few guys say like, Hey, well, wait a second.
03:29I had a better year than Nico and you guys gave him a new, you guys gave him more money.
03:34So how come I'm not?
03:35And it's manageable, but there does come a time at some point, especially if they get
03:40to a point where they give CJ Stroud a contract, uh, not to mention Kalen Bullock and guys
03:45like that, you got to start doing, you basically have to do where, what the lions are doing
03:51right now.
03:52I always, I've looked at the Texans, like they are the Dan Campbell lions, but they're just
03:57a couple of years behind the curve.
03:59And a couple of years ago, the lions, wow, this is a team that you got to watch out for
04:04them.
04:04Just look at what they're doing and look at all the good players they have on their team.
04:08And yeah, you wouldn't have been surprised to see them in a Superbowl sometime in the
04:11last couple of years.
04:12They haven't gotten to a Superbowl.
04:14And they're also now at the point where they've got a trade away guys like David Montgomery.
04:18That's right.
04:18They got to start making tough to some of their players.
04:20So it's not, and it's not like it's a mess in Detroit or anything right now.
04:24It's just a different stage in the life cycle of where you are with your cap and the,
04:28and the players on your team.
04:29I'm genuinely curious if this was a case of Nico or his camp.
04:35Drew Rosenhaus is his agent just for, for, for informational purposes.
04:40And Drew Rosenhaus is considered one of the more premier agents out there.
04:43He's one of 29 different agents who claimed that the movie Jerry Maguire was based on him.
04:48Yeah.
04:48That was a big thing back in the day.
04:49It was.
04:50You're an agent and you weren't claiming that Jerry Maguire was based on you.
04:53What are you even doing?
04:54So the only thing we can really take from that is he's been doing this a while.
04:57Yeah.
04:57Because that movie is in 1996.
04:59Um, but Drew Rosenhaus is Nico's agent and I do wonder like, was so, so was Drew Rosenhaus
05:06agitating for this or is this Nick Casario just taking care of a guy that it feels like
05:11he's trying to head this off at the pass?
05:13Headed it off at the pass?
05:14Yeah.
05:15I don't know.
05:15Yeah.
05:15I don't, I don't think anything like this ever happens without, uh, somebody saying something.
05:20Probably.
05:21Yeah.
05:21Yeah.
05:21Probably.
05:21Probably not.
05:22You know, you know, you've been a boss before.
05:24I have.
05:24You've got, uh, you've got, you're really good employees and they don't cause any problems
05:29and you assume everything's fine until, uh, all of a sudden you realize, oh, I should
05:33have been.
05:34And the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
05:35I mean, yeah, in your mind, you're off at some corporate retreat burning through all
05:38the company funds, you know, sort of racking up $500 bar tabs and everything.
05:43Right.
05:43And in your mind, you think like, oh, I wonder, you know, Nico's, uh, been the sales leader
05:46for a couple of years here.
05:47And, uh, maybe I should, uh, have a conversation with him about whether he wants some more, wants
05:53to change his compensation back.
05:54That didn't happen.
05:54But then you get, you keep getting drunk and you forget about it.
05:56Yeah.
05:56Yeah.
05:57Yeah.
05:57That's, that's probably, that's probably, I can think of like three guys now that you
06:02did, they're from back in my sales days that, uh, that you should have taken care of.
06:05Probably.
06:06Or yeah, just, yeah, just, you know, no, just, yeah, yeah.
06:09I'm just, I don't want to go into my sales career.
06:11I don't want to bore people with it.
06:12There might've been, okay.
06:13Unless, you know, they, they signed Nikki.
06:16I almost called them Nikki.
06:18You know, Nikki.
06:19We're, we're good pals.
06:20Yeah.
06:21Nico.
06:21Uh, they signed Nico early in the cycle that.
06:52Yeah.
06:54Seventh yards per reception.
06:56Second yards per route run.
06:58Second 14 receptions of 40 plus yards.
07:01That's a, now that is not an average.
07:03That is a counting stat.
07:04Yeah.
07:05Tied for first.
07:05He is first in with receptions of 50 or more yards.
07:10So he's had big playability.
07:12Some of that's been getting deep.
07:13Some of that's been yards after the catch, which he's willing to truck guys.
07:17He's sixth in receptions of 20 or more yards.
07:20Um, so he's got a bunch of counting stats and he's got a bunch of per game stats.
07:24The per game stats are the ones that when I look at how good he is there, I sit and
07:30I
07:30go, Seth, I'm like, okay, it's, you know, the per game stats are great.
07:33Like the problem is he needs to start playing 17 games a year and the playoffs and in the
07:38play.
07:39Yeah.
07:39Yeah.
07:40Nice.
07:40I would say a divisional round game in, in new England.
07:43Yeah, man.
07:44Yep.
07:44Yep.
07:45So that's the whole, uh, that's this, so that part's a little scary.
07:48He's got an injury history.
07:49That's a yesterday.
07:50We were kind of joking about it.
07:51And except now I'm feeling like it's going to become my new true religion, uh, which is
07:55I feel like every player needs to be wearing a guardian cap or they're selfish.
07:58Yeah, I, especially, I don't know, listen, I know zero about the science of the guardian
08:04caps other than does it really need to be a lot?
08:06Hey, if we put a pillow on your head, maybe it'll, maybe it'll, uh, reduce the impact a
08:12little bit.
08:12I don't need a graph for that.
08:14Okay.
08:14A thicker apparatus on your dome.
08:16Yeah.
08:17You'll get hurt less.
08:17But it seems like his concussion and the way he sustained it, it seems like exactly the
08:22situation where a guardian cap might help.
08:24Yeah.
08:24You know?
08:25Yeah.
08:25Because he whacked it off the turf.
08:26Right?
08:27Oh, yeah.
08:27He went like head first.
08:28Yeah.
08:29Yeah.
08:29It was against Pittsburgh.
08:30Yep.
08:31Um, so I do think this shows, this show does show the history of them taking care of guys.
08:37They take care of guys and it was, he, he kept it up and he is still went healthy.
08:42One of the most effective and lethal wide receivers in the league.
08:45He's just got to stay healthy, but they don't know that the part where I, it's still a good
08:51contract, even at this price.
08:53Well, right for the Texans.
08:54Yeah.
08:54Contract for the Texans.
08:55Yeah.
08:55If they had come in and gave him all of a sudden they set the new bar, then I, then
09:00I probably
09:01would have made something of it.
09:03This, it's more reasonable that, okay, they're putting him up more in the tier where he should
09:07be, but still a bargain.
09:09You know, the old, I hate it when people say, well, if he was a free agent, he would have
09:12made such and such and such and such.
09:14Right.
09:14That's where the teams don't have any leverage when you're a free agent.
09:17Yeah.
09:17So the, uh, the, the, you know, balancing out of the leverage you have and all of that
09:23is, yeah, look, we're not going to, we don't have to give you a league setting contract.
09:27You're not a free agent, but this is a little bit more in line with where you need to be.
09:31I do, I do wonder, I do wonder, I mean, you think of this off season, they give Daniil
09:35another 40 million guaranteed.
09:37They extend Dalton Schultz with more, more money in another year.
09:40Um, Aziz Alshair got the third best linebacker contract in the sport.
09:45Now Nico's just, here's more money.
09:47You know, I want, this is what I'm saying.
09:49I wonder how CJ Stroud is looking at all this.
09:51Oh yeah.
09:52Yeah.
09:52I, you know, I think that's where you get money and you get money and here's your contract
09:56for you.
09:57The biggest thing that I think I've liked about trends in the NFL over the last couple of
10:02years is that it doesn't seem like quarterbacks are operating by such different rules anymore.
10:09I think teams are looking a little bit more there.
10:13They're they've made, uh, they made quarterbacks a little bit more like the blue collar rank
10:18and file that look, there's multiple different ways to win a championship or be a good team.
10:23We've seen so many examples in recent years of either guys like Sam Darnold or aging veterans
10:28like Matt Stafford and Tom Brady.
10:30There's different ways to get a quarterback and they don't always have to be the top paid
10:35guys in the league.
10:36I think things are balancing out a little bit and including guys on their own team shouldn't
10:41expect to get a huge contract just because they're a quarterback under contract.
10:46You should get a huge contract when you're one of the best quarterbacks in the league.
10:50And, uh, you know, does David Mulligetta feel that way?
10:53I would guess most agents don't, uh, agents who have quarterbacks as clients don't, but,
10:58uh, as far as seed feel that way, I mean, we haven't heard a peep out of them expressing any
11:03kind of discontent about it until, until I do, then I wouldn't, I don't, I'm not too worried
11:09about it.
11:09I think the most likely scenario is that whatever he does feel in terms of either just, you know,
11:17what about me or anything like that?
11:18He's using that as a, as a good carrot on a stick.
11:21Yes.
11:22That it's like, all right.
11:22Yep.
11:23You know what?
11:23I, I have to, if I'm being honest with myself, I haven't produced like Nico Collins.
11:28I haven't produced like any of those defensive guys.
11:30I need to be a guy that produces like that.
11:32And yeah, they'll take care of me.
11:33It's a good point.
11:34Um, OTA start today, by the way, uh, OTAs we'll talk, we'll talk at the top of the hour
11:39as to what we're, I guess for Wednesday and Friday, what we're hoping to hear, because
11:44the only, the only one that's open to us, to the media is tomorrow's session.
11:48And that'll be where we get players after practice.
11:51And that'll be where we get to hear from CJ Stroud, presumably for the first time since
11:55the, probably since the end of the season, since the day after the loss to the New England
12:01Patriots, very anxious to hear the answers to any contractual questions.
12:05I think any contractual questions, I think the, I think we're at a minus 3000 on anything
12:12on any excitement will happening.
12:14No excitement level or no excitement.
12:16Yeah.
12:16So I don't, how would I, if I predict that he's going to say a bland, boring, cliche stuff
12:22about his contract, that's a heavy favorite.
12:26Heavy favorite.
12:26Yeah.
12:26Minus 3000, I think minus 3000 would mean you got to risk 3000 just to win a measly
12:30hundred dollars.
12:31I think you're right.
12:32I think if he says anything notable, it'll be, if he says anything notable, it'll be something
12:37that gives you extreme clarity.
12:39If he said like, Hey, listen guys, I haven't produced the way the top quarterbacks produced
12:45in the last couple of years.
12:46And I, you know, I'm planning on playing this season out and I don't even want to discuss
12:51the contract until after this season or something like that.
12:54That would be notable and it would be awesome.
12:56Yeah.
12:56I don't, I'm not saying that's what he should say, or I, I expect him to say that or anything.
13:00Um, but I, I, I have zero, I have a, a 0.1% expectation of him saying something, uh,
13:08that
13:09sounds like he wants a new contract or he's pushing for a new contract.
13:12My prediction is it's going to be something of like my agent handles that stuff.
13:16That'll be part of it.
13:17You know, he's going to just, he's going to try to move on to the next question.
13:21Yeah.
