00:01For months, Julia Bishop has been resisting pressure from staff, students and some politicians
00:07to resign after the resignation of the ANU's Vice-Chancellor Genevieve Bell late last year.
00:13Ms Bishop in September said she had the full backing of the council and intended to see
00:18her tenure through, but today she confirmed she was stepping down effective immediately,
00:23saying she was deeply privileged to have held the role, but expressing concern about the
00:27ANU council's ability to discharge its legal and ethical obligations amid what she says
00:32is unprecedented and coordinated interference. Unions and some politicians have long called
00:38for her to go, after numerous controversies, including questions about the culture of the
00:42university's council and a cost-saving restructure program which included job cuts. Today, they
00:48welcomed the announcement.
00:49The last two years have been incredibly destructive, incredibly damaging to a lot of people and
00:54that damage will take some time to heal.
00:56The university's council has agreed that pro-chancellor Dr Larry Marshall will step in as acting
01:02chancellor until the new permanent chancellor can be appointed through the process approved
01:07by the higher education regulator.
