The number of female coaches in Australian high-performance sport has nearly tripled in the past four years to 26 per cent. But systemic cultural barriers still remain, with leading mentors hoping to create change at all levels of sport.

00:03One of Australia's most decorated Paralympians, Louise Savage, has been amongst a small number
00:09of women coaching at the elite level for the past 20 years.
00:13It's been really good to see that infrastructure and also the investment into women's coaching.
00:18It hasn't been an easy path but she wants to see more women join her.
00:22I think it's important that we encourage them to continue on in those roles and to show
00:27the identity and what we can bring as female coaches.
00:30We've had a history where we've just had male coaches coaching our best athletes.
00:34We want to make sure the right people are coaching our athletes at the right time, female or male.
00:40The AIS has been focused on growing the number of female head coaches in high performance
00:45sport over the past four years.
00:47In that time the figure has doubled to 26 per cent.
00:50That's it, faster, faster, faster.
00:52But it's found there are still barriers including poor recruitment processes, outdated work
00:57structures and misogynistic and abusive behaviour.
01:00When you talk about culture I don't think that's actually unique to just high performance coaches.
01:05As a system we've had a real focus in the last couple of years of wellbeing being fundamental
01:11to high performance.
01:12And there are still few elite coaches with disability.
01:15It's unfortunate that there aren't as many.
01:17I'm not sure of all the barriers that exist.
01:21I suppose I've negotiated quite a lot myself but there are more people there now that can help.
