Welcome back to Lloyd and Mandy! In today’s Thailand travel vlog, I’m building the ultimate DIY ice bath right in our villa for under $400. Using a chest freezer, I’ve created a cold plunge setup that’s perfect for daily cold therapy sessions. Cold therapy has been a game-changer for us ever since we discovered the Wim Hof Method a few years ago. Now that we have the space, it’s time to bring the benefits of cold plunging into our own home. Watch as I walk you through the process of converting a chest freezer into the perfect ice bath and share why cold therapy is such an essential part of our wellness routine. If you’re into DIY projects, cold therapy, or just curious about the benefits of cold plunging, you’ll love this video! Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe to follow our journey and see more creative projects from our life in Thailand. Thanks for watching! 😊

00:03oh yes we finally got our delivery we've been waiting on this is this is our brand
00:18new chest freezer that we ordered off Lazada here in Thailand for about 1200
00:24bar which is like maybe 350 US dollars and today we're gonna be turning this
00:31into our very own home ice bath I watched a video on YouTube from this guy who
00:39made his own ice bath using a chest freezer we wanted to have an ice bath at
00:44home for a long time we've been using the onsen here in Hua Hin and I just want
00:50to be able to wake up every morning and jump in the ice bath because I think
00:55the health benefits are amazing if you've never done it give it a try we're
00:59gonna give it a crack we're gonna try and turn this into an ice bath and hopefully
01:02it works we're gonna take you guys with us and yeah let's open this bad boy up and
01:07see how big it is hopefully I'll fit in it
01:42yeah this definitely looks big enough for me to fit in
01:50easily
01:55this is actually pretty roomy
02:00so as I said this is a I think it's a 14 cubic 14 cubic feet I think it was
02:0814 cubic it's 14 cubic
02:10something it's basically 1.3 meters long about 70 centimeters wide and 85 centimeters deep
02:20which is plenty for me I'm 6'2 I just sat in it and I can fit in it perfectly
02:26so what
02:27we're gonna have to do is first of all we're gonna have to seal up all the cracks
02:34with silicon we're gonna let the silicon sit and then we're gonna make sure there's no holes so
02:42we're going to fill it up with water there's a plug here
02:51if we want to drain it and if it works all good and it holds the water we've then got
02:58a regulator
02:59that I bought so when we plug it into the wall it's not going to just turn into one big
03:05solid
03:06sheet of ice the regulator is going to turn the freezer off when it reaches a certain temperature
03:13probably like maybe like four or five degrees maybe six depending how extreme we want to go
03:19and then we should have our own running ice bath the only thing is we're not entirely sure if it's
03:26going to stay cold in the Thailand heat I think it should though I think it should be alright
03:32like it's designed to freeze it's going to be kept over in a shaded part of our house which
03:38doesn't get any Sun and this time of year it's actually not that hot here believe it or not so
03:44perfect time to test it out let's just seal up these cracks I think I'm gonna show Mandy
03:54you bastard you didn't know I was in there he needs your help but he's just gone around the back
04:09open it have a look all right you want to turn it on
04:20so we're testing it without doing any sealing at the moment because doesn't look like there's
04:26much to seal up it might actually work as is awesome watercolour is not great
04:52all right we did a little test run we filled it up with water no leaks except there is a
04:57little plug
04:59in the bottom which is really so we just siliconed it up so there's absolutely no leaks and I'm pretty
05:13confident it's gonna work when we want to empty it we're just gonna have to siphon it out I think
05:18but
05:21we're going to run an extension lead and make sure it's all waterproof the electrical and everything
05:27because we've got it sitting out here in the shade surrounded by a tree it's gonna be a really nice
05:32place to have an ice bath in the morning we're gonna get the electrical done and then we're gonna
05:38fill it up probably leave it overnight and in the morning we'll see if we have an ice bath working
05:45all
05:46right we filled it up with water overnight now we're gonna see if it's cold this is the test oh
06:02wow
06:08that's really cold I wouldn't say it's quite oh maybe ice bath yet more cold plunge I'm gonna need
06:20to get a water thermometer because I want to actually know what temperature it's at oh it feels pretty
06:27good I think I might need to add a little bit more water though because I want to fully submerge
06:35in it
06:35without without overflowing it so I might stick a little bit more water in it but that's definitely
06:42working but for now I need to go and take my car to the mechanic for the second time this
06:48week
06:52well our first monitor lizard here in Thailand wow he's huge three foot maybe look at the size of it
07:07I don't know if these things are aggressive or not oh he's looking at me he's looking right at me
07:19the tail alone looks like it's about two foot I don't know how quick these things are we're pretty
07:26used to dangerous venomous animals in Australia but this thing is massive I think I scared him off
07:44that was cool I was wondering when we'd see our first monitor lizard I was just taking the rubbish out
07:50and walk past him freaked me the fuck out actually okay mechanics taking a look at the car man I
08:09can't
08:10stress enough how awesome the mechanic is every time I come in straightaway looks at it diagnoses
08:18the problem and fixes it for me within like an hour or two and it's really really cheap I'm really
08:23thankful to have this mechanic and be just it's so much easier in Thailand and cheaper than it would
08:30be in Australia but I just wanted to take this time to talk about physical health and mental health which
08:37is sort of what this whole video is about the reason we're making this ice bath at our place we're
08:43trying to turn our villa into I guess somewhat of a health retreat for ourselves having a baby and being
08:55extremely busy it makes it really hard sometimes to go to the gym or go to yoga like last Saturday
09:01when I
09:02had the car problems I was about to go to jiu-jitsu which is my favorite day to go on
09:07Saturdays because
09:08it's open mat which means there's no actual class it's just you show up and you can spar you can
09:16play
09:16around you can learn some stuff of other people and it's just a really really good way to start the
09:22day but I wasn't able to go I had to sort the car out and then I had some work
09:26to do and then I had
09:28prior plans with my mum who's in town for just a couple of weeks and I really noticed that my
09:36mental
09:36health just didn't feel great that day physical and mental and so having something like an ice bath
09:43at home and even just a yoga mat where you can quickly get something done in 10 20 minutes is
09:53really
09:54a game changer and really important for us we've noticed that from a traveling there's been a lot
10:01of times where we're on the road and we don't have time or there isn't like a gym or anything
10:05available
10:06one thing we found really helpful which you guys might like is the Wim Hof breathing technique video
10:14basically Wim Hof you've never heard of him he's the ice man he's the reason we started doing ice baths
10:20and he basically talks you through this breathing technique it only takes about 10 minutes and me
10:26and Mandy try and do it every morning when we were traveling on the road and we were in a
10:31rush we
10:32didn't have access to anything we would just start our day doing this breathing technique and it
10:37completely changes the way you approach the day feels like it just cleanses you and gets rid of negative
10:44energy and gives you a lot more positive energy and that's pretty much why we got the ice bath
10:51because there's some days where things just come up and you're not able to exercise or do what you
10:59want to do for the day in order to get your mind right and get your body right but you
11:04can jump in the
11:04ice bath spend two three minutes in there and I'm telling you right now it will completely change the
11:12way you feel not just in the moment but for the rest of the day so we're gonna keep trying
11:18to do
11:18stuff like that we've got plans to put a sauna in in our place and get a little bit of
11:23a home gym set
11:24up because you know we're really busy we've got a couple of projects we're building at the moment
11:30we just started a free school community where we're helping people who want to start a YouTube
11:37channel specifically travel vlogging but can be any type of YouTube channel we're building that
11:42community you can find a link down below and we have another couple of projects we're working on
11:46as well as well as this channel and then of course you know we have a baby and that kind
11:53of just means
11:53that the schedule is off some days I plan to go to jiu-jitsu and I can't Mandy wants to
11:58go to yoga
11:59etc etc like anyone who has kids would know your schedule just gets thrown out the window so the more
12:05we can
12:06have at home at our disposal I feel like the better it's easy to use the excuse that I'm busy
12:12or the
12:13baby's fussy or hasn't slept good and I'll just take the day off and some days you need to do
12:19that
12:19don't get me wrong but if that starts happening a few days in a row we really notice a decline
12:27in our
12:28mostly our mental health I think physical and mental health is it's all linked it's all linked and if you're
12:33not
12:34taking care of your physical then your mental is going to decline as well so that's just my little message
12:40while I'm waiting for the car to get fixed and hopefully you guys got a little bit of value out
12:46of it
12:46all right got the issues with the car sorted and got my hands on a water thermometer so I'm going
12:55to go
12:55and check out if this ice bath is cold enough and give it a bit of a test run see
13:00how it goes
13:01but before I do I just want to give a quick shout out to safety wing for sponsoring today's video
13:05okay guys so if you're going to be traveling to Thailand in the near future and safety is one of
13:11your priorities then you're going to want to have a good travel insurance we've traveled with safety
13:17wing nomad insurance for almost three years now since the day we left Australia and we've unfortunately
13:23had to use them a few times when we got sick while traveling both in Bali and in Mexico
13:29but safety wing has recently made a massive update to their nomad insurance policy which
13:34is a complete game changer safety wing nomad complete is designed to be your complete medical
13:40coverage while at home or abroad including medical coverage up to 1.5 million dollars for example they'll
13:47cover you for up to 250 000 for any motor vehicle accidents as long as you're following all of the
13:53road rules so if you're going to be driving a scooter or a car make sure that you have the
13:57right
13:57license you're wearing a seat belt or you're wearing a helmet and whatever you do just don't drink and
14:02drive but aside from that they'll also cover you for things like lost luggage up to 500 per item if
14:09you get sick or injured while traveling up to 250 000 meals and accommodation if you have a travel
14:16delay over 12 hours and even flights back home if an emergency arises such as god forbid a death in
14:23the family and they'll also cover you while you're visiting home so if you're traveling full-time like
14:28us and you want to go home to visit family for the Christmas holidays they'll keep covering you for
14:33up to 30 days while you're at home we've actually had to use the safety wing claims process a couple
14:40of
14:40times and it has been nothing short of amazing we can't recommend them enough so if you need a good
14:45travel insurance we'll leave a link down below to safety wing nomad insurance all right let's see how cold
14:54this ice bath is hopefully it's not too cold okay first thing I can notice is there is about an
15:09inch
15:09of ice built up around the sides of the ice bar which tells me it might be a fraction too
15:15cold if we
15:15leave it on like this it might end up freezing over so I think I might have to actually install
15:20the
15:20regulator also there's a lot of sediment built up down the bottom like dirt I guess that's from the
15:26water we're using water from our water tank to put into the ice bath so I guess maybe it's not
15:32the
15:32cleanest water I don't think there's anything wrong with it but maybe we'll look at using filtered water
15:37or some kind of system to keep the water a bit cleaner in the future but let's see how cold
15:43it is
15:43all right turn this thing on four three it's going past lower than two degrees one and a half
15:57one point three one point one one okay it looks like this is going to be around zero which is
16:06what
16:06I thought because there is ice built up around it that's pretty much a perfect ice bath zero point
16:12six zero point five it's still going I don't know if you guys can see that but it says zero
16:17point five
16:17degrees wow that's cold zero point five um usually I've done ice baths around three or four degrees
16:27unless it's like literally a bath full of ice but you know what I'm gonna give it a go anyway
16:32I'm gonna see if I can do a minute we'll see how I feel after okay here goes first test
16:39run I'm gonna
16:39try and do at least a minute so I'm gonna set my timer up my phone might do like a
16:46minute and
16:4720 seconds or something to give me a bit of buffer let's do a minute 25 okay here goes
17:00I think the hardest part about getting in the ice bath is literally getting in the ice bath
17:28once you're in and you get that urge to jump out if you can get through that
17:38I think that's the first stage and then the second stage is about 20 30 seconds in
17:48where your feet and your hands start to really hurt and you want to get out really bad
17:54which is what's happening right now you just focus on breathing and then I've noticed in the past
18:09after that initial shock and pain about 45 seconds to a minute it kind of goes away and it actually
18:18starts to feel warm believe it or not I know that sounds weird which is what it's starting to feel
18:23now
18:25and it starts to feel good my time is already going off I felt like a quick minute I'm gonna
18:36stay in a
18:36little bit longer because I'm not feeling too bad I can't put my hands under because I'm holding the camera
18:53pretty much down to my shoulders that's probably a minute and a half I'll put a timer up in the
19:00corner somewhere
19:02I'm gonna go jump in the pool
19:10okay I think that's long enough
19:19let's jump in the pool
19:29that feels pretty incredible
19:32actually makes the pool feel really warm like a spa or something
19:35my legs are tingling
19:37I think I did about a minute and a half
19:40maybe a little bit more
19:42I want to work myself up to about three minutes
19:44but um yeah it's tough I think I'm going to try and do that every morning
19:51from now on pretty much just wake up and get in the ice bath there's so many benefits to it
19:56which
19:57obviously I'm not a doctor or a scientist but I've read a lot about the benefits of ice bath which
20:02I'll
20:02share with you guys in a minute but I'm just going to take Bear for a swim now
20:06that was good I feel amazing
20:07Bear you want to come swim?
20:09come on
20:11come on
20:25well a swim and a hot shower never felt so bloody good I feel amazing
20:32but as I said obviously I am no doctor or health professional so I don't want to be giving people
20:40advice
20:41on whether or not they should uh do an ice bath or not but I actually recommend
20:49if it's something you're thinking about um go and check out Wim Hof's YouTube channel
20:53we've been following him for a long time now as I mentioned earlier
20:55he goes deep into the benefits of cold exposure
20:59how he got into it
21:02strongly recommend following his channel because
21:04he's helped a lot of people out with getting their health together
21:08but I actually just checked out ChatGPT
21:12which is something I've started using recently
21:14I don't know if you guys have used it but ChatGPT is incredible
21:18you can ask at anything and I've just asked what are the benefits of ice baths and this is what
21:24it said
21:24number one reduces muscle soreness and inflammation
21:27so immersing your body in cold water constricts blood vessels reducing inflammation
21:32and swelling caused by intense exercise
21:35so if you want to use it for recovery
21:37say you're training martial arts or anything like that
21:40jumping in an ice bath is excellent for recovery
21:42by reducing inflammation and increasing circulation when you re-warm
21:47so as in like after you get out of the ice bath
21:50ice baths may enhance recovery time enabling athletes to perform at high intensity sooner
21:56that's why you see like professional football players and basketball players and stuff
22:00they're always using ice
22:01number three ease joint and muscle pain
22:04the cold water can numb nerve endings
22:06offering temporary pain relief for sore or inflamed joints and muscles
22:10so maybe if you have like arthritis or something like that
22:13could offer you temporary relief
22:16number four boosts circulation
22:18this is a big one
22:19alternating between cold exposure and warm conditions can stimulate blood flow
22:25potentially benefiting cardiovascular health and aiding in nutrient delivery to tissues
22:31so increasing your blood flow is like the best thing you can do as far as getting nutrients into your
22:36body
22:37this one's my favorite one and honestly the biggest reason I do it
22:40which is improves mental resilience
22:43ice baths challenge mental toughness as enduring cold temperatures requires focus
22:48breathing control and tolerance I just feel like getting up in the morning and knowing you're going to jump into
22:53a freezing cold ice bath even though it's the last thing you feel like doing first thing in the morning
22:59and doing it anyway that feeling afterwards I get the same feeling when I train brazilian jiu-jitsu or do
23:06anything that's hard it just feels like you've overcome an obstacle first thing in the morning especially first thing in
23:13the morning it sets you up for a good day and I think that yeah it does build mental resilience
23:18the next is that it supports immune function so cold exposure can temporarily increase levels of certain immune cells for
23:27example white blood cells which is super important
23:29so long-term effects still being studied number seven regulates body temperature after workouts in hot conditions so like here
23:37in Thailand
23:38ice baths can help lower core body temperature quickly preventing overheating or heat related illnesses so I guess like sunstroke
23:46or something like that enhance sleep quality
23:49I have noticed this when I was doing ice baths every day when I was in Canada I noticed my
23:53sleep was much better
23:54cold water cold water immersion can trigger a relaxation response aiding some people in improving their sleep quality
24:00and finally reduces swelling in injuries so if you have any like sporting injuries or anything like that ice baths
24:07are often used to reduce swelling
24:08and inflammation after acute injuries particularly in sports and rehabilitation settings so
24:14to me my takeaway is the biggest thing is that it reduces inflammation and it helps blood circulation which is
24:21so so so so important
24:22I think inflammation is the cause of like 90% of all illnesses believe it or not and people think
24:30that that's just something that you can't control
24:32you can control that you can reduce your inflammation and doing something as simple as jumping in an ice bath
24:38or a sauna
24:38an ice bath as you saw it takes 90 seconds I was in there for 90 seconds and then I
24:44felt amazing afterwards if you want to do a sauna
24:47similar thing it takes about 15 minutes if you don't have time to go to the gym get a workout
24:53in you can just jump in the ice bath in the morning
24:55which is what I'm going to do we're really trying to minimize the amount of time we have to leave
25:00the house to get ourselves feeling good
25:02that's because of the baby obviously like some days we're just too busy and we don't have time to go
25:07to the gym but if I can just jump in an ice bath for a couple of minutes
25:11jump in a sauna which is the next thing we're gonna do we're gonna buy a sauna and put it
25:15here we'll show you that
25:16I think the benefits are amazing and it cost us it was like 400 US dollars or something
25:22I'm gonna need to put a regulator in it but I've already got that all up like less than 400
25:26dollars
25:28I think it's a really really good investment let me know what you guys think below if you've tried the
25:32ice bath before
25:33if you haven't and you're thinking about it and you found this video helpful
25:36please hit the like and subscribe button for more content like this and we'll see you on the next video
25:42thanks for watching guys cheers
