A lorry driver who drove a "Black Maria" belonging to the Immigration Department has been charged at a Magistrate's Court in Kuala Lumpur with five counts, including reckless driving that caused the death of three family members.

Mohd Akbar Zainol, 43, pleaded not guilty to all charges after they were read out before magistrate Aliaa Anwar.

00:00The driver of the Immigration Department's Black Maria Lorry, involved in the fatal Jalan Sultan Ismail crash,
00:07has been charged over the deaths of three family members.
00:1043-year-old Muhammad Akbar Zainal was brought to the KL Magistrates' Court on Thursday to face five charges,
00:18including reckless driving causing death.
00:21He pleaded not guilty to all charges after they were read before Magistrate Aliyah Anwar.
00:28The first three charges relate to the deaths of retired soldier Sheikh Mohammed Firdaus, Sheikh Yahya,
00:35and his two daughters, Siti Norshazlin and Siti Darwisha Aouni,
00:39in the crash at Jalan Sultan Ismail at 1 a.m. on August 19.
00:45Those charges, under Section 41, Subsection 1 of the Road Transport Act, 1987,
00:51carry between five and ten years jail, a fine of 20,000 to 50,000 ringgit,
00:58and a minimum five-year driving disqualification upon conviction.
01:03A fourth charge accuses him of careless driving that injured Noor Hayati Rozali at the same location,
01:10punishable under Section 43, Subsection 1, with a fine of up to 10,000 ringgit and up to 12 months
01:17jail.
01:18The fifth charge relates to allegedly running a red light at the same junction,
01:23under Section 79, Subsection 2, which carries a fine of between 300 and 2,000 ringgit.
01:31Deputy Public Prosecutor Shajaratudur Abdul Rahman proposed bail of 15,000 ringgit,
01:38with one surety for each charge,
01:40along with conditions including monthly police reporting and surrender of his passport.
01:45Lawyer Izzat Amir Saharuddin, representing the accused,
01:50sought for minimum bail, citing his client's school-going children,
01:54his responsibility for his elderly mother,
01:5711 years of service with the Immigration Department,
02:00and no previous convictions.
02:02He added that his client will cooperate fully
02:05and attend court until the case is concluded.
02:08The court granted bail of 12,000 ringgit for each charge,
02:12with a condition to report to police monthly.
02:15Mohamed Akbar's driving license was suspended until the case concludes,
