00:00Am I being fair or unfair when I say Kyle Whittingham has to make the college football playoff in year
00:06one?
00:07This is an old college football where you get three or four years to bring in your own guys.
00:11Kirk Signetti rewrote the rules.
00:12The transfer portal rewrote the rules.
00:15And you don't hire a guy pushing 70 to lay the foundation.
00:18You got a five-star quarterback.
00:20Unlock them.
00:21You brought your guys from Utah.
00:22Go win.
00:23Schedule's tough.
00:25Okay.
00:26Win some big games.
00:28You know, you go to a place like Michigan, you should walk into eight wins.
00:31I think outside of Rich Rod, every coach from Bo on has won at least eight games his first year.
00:35The average is nine wins in your first season for everybody not named Rich Rod.
00:40So you come in and the expectation is you make the college football playoff immediately.
00:45That you can be one of the four best teams in the Big Ten year over year over year.
00:50And eventually you're challenging for a national title.
00:52I think the bar is fair, but Michigan fans can speak for themselves.
00:55Two, four, eight, five, three, nine, ninety seven, ninety seven.
00:58Is that a fair or unfair expectation?
01:01So Jim, I, uh, I generally agree with your premise, except you tend to use this language
01:08as in Kyle Whittingham has to make the playoff.
01:11And I sit back here and I say, or what, or what?
01:13Yeah, right.
01:14Or we'll have an unfavorable view of him as Michigan's football coach.
01:17Jim mad.
01:18Well, fans have expectations.
01:20It doesn't mean people get fired over them.
01:22Sure.
01:22Sure.
01:23Right.
01:23Yeah.
01:23I mean, if, if, if you don't make the playoffs for Dan Campbell, is it a failure?
01:29Yes.
01:29Yes.
01:30But that wasn't the case.
01:31The first year he coached, that's the difference here.
01:34Well, college has become a different college is different.
01:36And it did Kirk Cignetti make the college football playoffs in his first year.
01:41Yep.
01:42National title.
01:42Indiana.
01:44I think he's more of an outlier than what we're going to see going forward.
01:47I don't know that, but Michigan fans are saying, he did famous, the famous, be the
01:52first one in, he recognized the field and jumped in at, it's like being the first one
01:58to do something new and create, he, he, he took full advantage of it.
02:02Yeah.
02:02You're a trailblazer.
02:03Okay.
02:04So now the blueprint's there.
02:06Now everybody else is trying to do it.
02:07It makes it harder.
02:08It is harder, but you thought you hired him.
02:10Shouldn't you be able to do it at Michigan where you inherit a nine win team?
02:12Now the schedule is very different, right?
02:15The schedule last year from the schedule this year, you've got Oklahoma, even though
02:18it's at home, you had Oklahoma last year, you've got Indiana, you didn't play Indiana
02:21last year.
02:22You've got, uh, Oregon, you didn't play Oregon last year and you've got Ohio state, which
02:26you're going to play every year.
02:27And yes, we do hate them.
02:28It is a matter of that's, that's a variable, but you also inherited a five-star superstar quarterback.
02:38Now, whether he played like that or not, that's, that's your job.
02:41That's your job is to get them there.
02:43You hired a quarterback coach.
02:44You've got a different offensive system.
02:45You, you inherit an offensive line that has experience and you could go down the list of
02:50all the assets that he inherited.
02:51Plus he brought in some of his guys from Utah and it is an upgrade having JJ view candidate
02:57wide receiver.
02:58There's no question.
02:59Along with Andrew Marsh, have a John Henry, a daily, uh, you know, defensive end.
03:03Yeah.
03:03A guy that was very successful up until he tore his Achilles last year.
03:07That was getting after the quarterback.
03:08You've made some upgrades, brought some of your guys in, and you inherited a team that
03:14won nine games with major dysfunction last year.
03:18I don't know.
03:19Again, this is kind of going down that road of will they, or won't they?
03:23We can have that conversation as we get closer to the season, but the expectation at Michigan
03:29is always going to be, whether it's first year, second year, 10th year of, of a coaching
03:34tenure.
03:34The expectation is that you are one of the top four teams in the big 10 and you are a
03:39college
03:39football playoff participant.
03:41So I think they're ranked perfectly.
03:43Like I'm expecting nine and three, but it could be eight and four.
03:46If they don't maybe get the Indiana game at home, I kind of think that might be the swing
03:50game, but the biggest thing here is, you know what?
03:54He didn't recruit Underwood.
03:56And if Underwood looks like he did last year or just barely better, does he, is he going
04:02to pull the trigger?
04:03Yeah.
04:03Does, does Underwood get the hook?
04:04Yeah.
04:05I look, I think it's the biggest thing facing this team this year.
04:08How much better is Bryce Underwood?
04:10The reason they went, what they did last year, nine and three, right?
04:14Yeah.
04:15Was because of him.
04:16Right.
04:16That's the reason they didn't go 10 and two.
04:19I know the year he didn't get better.
04:21Sharon probably factored in some being, he was somewhat distracted.
04:25I think distracted at halftime, distracted before the game, after the game, like there,
04:29there were some distractions.
04:30Well, hold on.
04:31Biff Pogie admitted they put the governor on, talking about governors this whole morning,
04:37they put the governor on Underwood when they went out into Oklahoma.
04:40I remember they didn't run him a lot.
04:41Yeah.
04:42Like at all.
04:42Yeah.
04:43So it's, it's, it's really just comes down to Underwood's growth.
04:45Cause I think, like you said, with the offensive line and I really think Jordan Marshall could
04:51potentially be the best running back in the big 10, but 16th perfect because you're sitting
04:56in this area where, oh, you could see a world where they're out of the top 25.
05:00Five after the Oklahoma game.
05:02Cause they don't look good.
05:03Right.
05:03You know, but then what if they win that game?
05:07You know, your buzz is going to build.
05:08To me, I think flirting with the playoff should be accepted, but I think if he doesn't get
05:12there and he's, and it's right there, I'm not going to get, I'm not going to bag him.
05:17You're getting into the whys and the hows.
05:19But it's also, yeah, the whys and the hows.
05:20And the expectation for Bryce also has to be reasonable expectation.
05:25The kid just turned 19, by the way, he actually turned 19 today.
05:28Happy birthday, Bryce.
05:28Say Bryce, but how big of a jump do you expect him to take from his first year to his
05:37second
05:38year?
05:38I expect it to be a big jump because the coaching in theory should be better.
05:43You mean he'll actually have a quarterback coach?
05:45Right.
05:45I liked the hire of winning him.
05:47I say like the past tense.
05:48I still like the hire.
05:49We're going to see how it plays out.
05:50But this is an adult.
05:51This is a guy whose fundamental principles are discipline running the football and it's
05:56not running the football in like a 1940s way.
05:59They're going to spread you out and still create explosives.
06:02They're going to add some skill position talent to help their young quarterback.
06:06I like the Whittingham hire, but we're going to find out right away with a season like
06:10this, what his impact is.
06:11Week two is Oklahoma.
06:13Mateer is going to be in the Heisman conversation.
06:15You're going to have yourself a game right away.
06:17John, you keep telling people don't sleep on Iowa.
06:20I'm telling you, Penn State's going to be a playoff team.
06:22They're coming to Ann Arbor.
06:23And then there's, of course, Indiana, Oregon on the road and OSU on the road.
06:27But your preseason proclamations are, yeah, I mean, is Clemson ranked this year?
06:34Who's got the returning quarterback with experience that stayed with the program?
06:38Clemson went from possible national champion to not even ranked.
06:42So you want to know who my kiss of death team is?
06:44It sounds like you just made it Penn State.
06:46I didn't say they're winning the national title.
06:47That was Clemson's fatal flaw last year as I picked them to win it all.
06:52I'll let you know before the season starts.
06:54The kiss of death team that's destined for failure.
06:56Next week in Vegas?
06:58That's when we did it last year.
06:59You're right.
07:00I'm smelling Oregon.
07:04I get it.
07:07Much to ponder.
07:092, 4, 8, 5, 3, 9, 97, 97.
07:11But I don't think it's unfair for that to be the standard.
07:14That should be the standard at Michigan.
07:18There's 12 teams that get in.
07:19Four of them in the Big Ten.
07:20You should be a playoff team.
07:21Jim, I'm just getting to know you better.
07:23I just hope I never know you as well as I know Stoney.
07:26That's, yeah, I hope so too.
07:29Text coming in.
07:30Foul.
07:31This is unfair.
07:32You're setting them up for failure.
07:33They have a brutal schedule.
07:34And another points out that Vegas has their win total set at 8 and a half.
07:389 and 3 probably doesn't get them in.
07:40This is an unfair bar for year one.
07:46Another says it doesn't hurt when Mark Cuban is bankrolling your program.
07:50These people.
07:51As if Michigan doesn't have any money.
07:53Yeah.
07:53Yeah.
07:54I mean, how did Bryce end up here?
07:55How about that basketball team?
07:58If you could go 9 and 4 without a QB coach or a head coach who was severely distracted,
08:02I have very high hopes for the new regime.
08:04Got to do better than that.
08:05Or it's a joke.
08:06So if 9's the floor, 10 gets you in for sure.
08:09Yeah, 10 would for sure get you in.
08:11And then it depends on 9 and 3.
08:12Like, you're going to have to beat somebody.
08:14And it will depend on what is Indiana this year.
08:19I do think that game at home is a swing game.
08:22Huge.
08:22Because, hey, new quarterback in Indiana.
08:24Are they going to continue the track that they've been on from, you know,
08:28two playoff appearances under Signetti, a national champion under Signetti.
08:32What are they this year?
08:33Because you know what you're walking into with Oklahoma.
08:36You know what you're walking into with Oregon and Ohio State.
08:41And then you throw in there Iowa and Penn State as well as, you know,
08:44kind of, hey, we've got to figure out what they're going to be.
08:46Just we've got to figure out what Michigan is going to be.
08:49This, to me, wasn't a conversation of are they appropriately ranked.
08:51I think they are.
08:52Me too.
08:53Probably just on the outside.
08:55Sure.
08:56As they should be.
09:00Next week when we're in Vegas, we can start making some season predictions.
09:02That'll be fun.
09:02We'll get to will they, won't they for a bunch of these teams.
09:05Oh, yeah.
09:05All right.
09:06Feedback.
09:062-4-8-5-3-9-97-97.
09:08The standard for Michigan is to cheat and make the playoffs.
09:13You've got to find some new rules to break this year.
09:16Well, and hopefully that's what Kyle Whittingham was brought in to prevent.
09:22Clean up.
09:22Yes.
09:23Yeah.
09:23Well, that is his M.O., is it not?
09:25That his programs are.
09:26Yeah, they're run the right way.
09:27They play the right way.
09:28They don't beat themselves.
09:29They take advantage of their home field.
09:31They were unbelievable.
09:32If you had to go to Rice Eccles at night at Utah, that was a nightmare.
09:35And he did very well in his rivalries.
09:38But it's a different animal when you get to the best conference in college football, John.
09:43It is.
09:44I mean, hey, three different national champs over three years.
09:47Might see four this year.
09:49Might see four.
09:502-4-8-5-3-9-97-97.
09:53Later in the hour, could this unlock a Lions Super Bowl victory?
09:57This position group should get more attention.
10:00It's 97-1.
