00:00My Girlfriend was a song the label hated. They didn't want it on the record. We had a fight to
00:04get it on the record, and then we had a fight to make it a single. We refused to tour
00:08because they
00:08didn't want to release it as a single. We said, well, we're not going to tour. We're going to go
00:11home. And that came from fan interaction. We play the song every night on stage, and the fans,
00:16they would go nuts. Rock, metal, frog, and everything in between. Welcome to this episode
00:23of Talkin' Rock with Meltdown. Don't forget to follow the audio-only Talkin' Rock podcast on
00:28all podcast platforms. And now, it's time for today's conversation. Here's Meltdown.
00:34What's going on, dude? We're just getting ready to start this big old tour with our friends in
00:41Seven Dust, who you know. Yep. And this new band called Return to Dust. So there's a lot of dust.
00:46Yeah, there's a lot of dust. You're going to shake the dust off and come to the Fillmore
00:50coming up on August 23rd. It's so funny. I don't want to get into it too much, but I remember
00:56interviewing Return to Dust last year or whatever, and I'm like, hey, listen, I don't really
00:59know that much about you guys, so I want you to kind of tell me the story. Like, tell me
01:03your story. And they forgot to mention the part about their drummer's dad, who's really
01:08famous. Yeah. They mentioned that. They totally skipped over that whole part. Well, they may
01:13not. They may, you know, smartly enough. I mean, we went through, no one in our band was
01:19famous, but, or had a famous parent. But, you know, like, as you know, when we started
01:24out, we were really close with the Nickelback guys, and Chad, you know, produced our first
01:28record. So, like, for us, we couldn't escape. Like, I mean, we used to get interviews, people
01:33were like, oh, what's Chad doing right now? You got his phone? Call him up. Call him up
01:36on the air. And we're like, all right, all right, enough. So we had to, like, really consciously
01:41make an effort to try to, like, be our own band and escape that, which we did. Yeah.
01:45Which we did. So they're trying as well. Yeah. It was funny because I said to him, I was
01:50talking, well, that band, Return of Dust, started with the singer, and I want to say
01:55the bass player, but I could be wrong. Anyways, the guitar player is walking down the street
01:58with his mother, and they heard this band jamming in this garage. And the mom went over there
02:03and said, hey, you guys should listen. You guys should talk to my son, who's a guitar
02:05player. And then I jokingly said to London, what, did your father get you in the band too?
02:11Oh, shit. I had no idea who he was. So anyhow, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
02:18But yeah, Return of Dust, like you said, Seven Dust, and you guys coming to town on August
02:2423rd. And last time I saw you, I was on that Motley tour last year. How'd that all wrap
02:28up for you guys? Oh, it was great. We only did the one show.
02:33Oh, is that it? Okay. I thought you were on tour. Yeah, it was just the one show. I wish
02:36it was the tour. When we did two tours, I think you came out to one of those shows probably
02:40on the tours we did way back, 2008. Oh, yeah.
02:44We did two tours with them, St. Los Angeles tour, and then they did an anniversary of
02:50Dr. Feelgood, which they did the whole album. So it was rad. That was the tour where Tommy
02:57burnt his hand, and then they had to get fill-in drummers come in, and he was still there.
03:03But Morgan from Seven Dust played one night. I remember that. He was actually the first guy
03:08that come in, and he smashed, he broke the set, smashed the bulbs above his head, and
03:14yeah, it was an interesting time. I remember waking up in the morning on the bus, and Joe,
03:18our drummer, comes on the bus, and he's just like, yeah, I gotta learn the whole set for
03:23Motley Crue tonight. They asked me to learn all the songs. He's freaking out.
03:28Really? Because I guess the first thing they did in the morning is went to the other band's
03:32drummers and said, you gotta learn all this stuff, but then they brought up Morgan. I guess he already
03:36knew all the songs, so. That's incredible. So let me get this straight. Did Joe ever play or no?
03:42No. They just wanted him to learn it in case, you know, someone couldn't fly. They couldn't
03:48have to fly someone in like that morning, and I guess Morgan made it. But in case he couldn't,
03:52they'd have someone there. Like Joe had to go and set up in a room and learn all the songs.
03:57Wait, how badass did that have been? Have you ever jumped on stage with another band to sing or do
04:03anything like that? Yeah, a little bit. It's kind of weird when you do it with other bands. It's
04:08almost like it's really nerve wracking for some reason. I don't know why, because who cares? But
04:13it's not, it's not like I'm not nervous. When I go on stage, I have no nerves at all. I'm
04:17like,
04:17I don't know, whatever. But then if someone's like, you want to come on stage and sing a song? I'm
04:21like,
04:21oh, God. I hope I remember the words. Yeah, right. What bands have you done that with?
04:27I don't even remember. I have, but I can't think of who. I just don't like doing it. Maybe I
04:33just,
04:33every time someone asks me, I'm like, nah, nah, nah, don't worry about it. Yeah, right.
04:37Yeah, that's great. So you got this part, Funeral Songs Part One coming out. That's to September
04:424th. What, that's six songs? Six. So it's part one of two. So we'll put another six out in March.
04:51That'll be EP two, what it's going to be called. I don't know. Some other kind of songs.
04:56Well, wait a second. It won't be Funeral Songs Part Two?
04:58Well, we can, but it's open, right? We can name whatever we want. So, but we've recorded three
05:04already. We just, we're in Nashville recording the first three, which sounded awesome. Like,
05:09not to say it's, it's better than the first EP, but they definitely graduated. We feel we're in a
05:15flow now. So, and then we have to go back after this tour's over and fly right back.
05:20Back to Nashville, record the rest. Okay. So you're in Nashville right now?
05:23No, I mean, we're in Minneapolis because the tour starts, we got pre-production today
05:28and tomorrow. Okay. And it's first shows in Duluth. So we'll just go from here to Duluth
05:33and then make a way around.
05:36Now, for people that don't know, what is involved in pre-production? I've been down in Nashville
05:41before and seen, there's this, there's this gigantic warehouse down there that some of
05:46the bigger bands go down and they do their pyro, they do everything. What is involved pre-production
05:51for you guys?
05:52Yeah. That's soundstage what you're talking about. Yeah. So we have, they have, so you can
05:56put a full set in there, full PA, arena PA, everything. So yeah, on purpose. So you, you're
06:01just building the show. So it's more for crew than it is for us. Right. It's not for us to
06:07learn our own songs. We, I mean, we already know the songs. Right. It's, it's for more of
06:12the, the, the, yeah, the, we don't have pyro, but if you were to do pyro and everything has
06:17to be timed. So it's all the lights, video screens, all that stuff take sometimes pre-pro
06:22is like weeks because there's so much, but us like, it's like for the bands only two
06:28days, like a, for the crew, it's more like four or five days. There's so much to do and
06:33set up. And then they have to figure out how to take all the stuff down and get into a
06:37truck in like half an hour. Right. So they have to, so us, we just go there and we fart
06:42around. And honestly, it's like, we've got a new monitor console we bought. So we'll have
06:46to figure out how to do all our new in-ear mixes. And people are usually buying new
06:51stuff. Dean's bought all a bunch of new bases. So, you know, pretty much just go
06:56there and you fart around. And then someone's like, you want to guys want to start playing
06:58music? I'm like, yeah, all right, we can play some songs.
07:02So, um, you guys got, you guys have put out three songs from this new EP so far.
07:06Yeah. Yeah. And so, uh, Winnebago lay low. That's the latest one, if I'm not mistaken.
07:11Right. Or is, is, I got a barricade out there in funeral song as well.
07:14A funeral. Yeah, that's it. Those are the three funeral song they just released. They're
07:17like grat tracks. It's this new thing where they just give people a little taste of what's
07:23to come. But the thing is, we only have six songs, so you can't really give them everything.
07:28You got them all. So it's good. I mean, yeah, so it's a little sad, but the good news is,
07:37is like the reason we did the EPs is because honestly, like it's, you've way better songs
07:43because now before, like we had the whole album written, but I had to be honest, like
07:50you probably half of them are not really great or half of them are like, nah, I don't know.
07:55Like it's me and acoustic guitars. What are we going to do with this? I don't know.
07:58So now we can pick the ones that we really like that we think are going to be the best
08:02and the
08:02fans are going to like. So same as EP2 now, like the three we just recorded were brand new songs.
08:07Cause they weren't even songs. So they're not even leftovers. So, you know, now instead of
08:11having EP2 be like the songs we didn't record, which are going to be not as good. Now they're
08:17like new songs are fresh. So it's a way better approach. And then at the end of it, they're
08:22going to get a full record. They'll have 12 songs and then we can, then we'll release
08:28the leftovers. Then they can get the mean acoustic guitar doing a song.
08:33Yeah. For like a movie soundtrack or something. Right. So theoretically speaking, is there
08:38a chance that the three songs you've already recorded for the next record could not even
08:42be on there? They could be the actors. They're good.
08:45No, just because we're doing vinyl and vinyl takes so long to make.
08:48So we had to master the vinyl like months ago. It's, we had, that's the thing is like
08:52to get a stuff out in March, we could record into March, but if we want physical, we're
08:59going to need to have that done by the end of the year. Like, and I'm like mastered
09:04because it takes, yeah, it's backlogged and you're doing this in Nashville. You
09:08said we're doing it in Nashville. We're doing it with a guy named Chris
09:11Baseford, uh, who's, uh, I'm co-producing it with them and he's awesome. He's, we
09:17worked with him once before doing a, this, we rerecorded the song called country song
09:23and we just did it for kind of for fun with a friend, Corey Marks, who's a country
09:28saying he was saying on it. And we loved it. We had a great connection and he's really
09:32good. And he lives, he moved to Nashville. So he lives there now. So we always find
09:37this best to work where the producer lives. I find we can, we're so used to traveling.
09:42We can, I don't need to be in LA to have, be in my mood. I don't know. So we
09:47just go,
09:48he lives in Nashville and we're going to Nashville.
09:50Yeah. You know what? Um, it's, it's funny because, you know, never having written songs,
09:54but I'm sure there's probably an area where you're, where you feel comfortable. Do you,
09:58do you come to Nashville with songs already written or do you start, start from scratch
10:01there? No, no, they're all done. There's, there's not a lot to do on the writing side.
10:07We'll go do some pre-production as well. We'll go into a rehearsal space and we'll just go
10:11through the songs and figure out tempo. Um, we'll figure out what key, if the key's a little
10:16low and then we'll just work on parts. It's like something's not right here. Like the drum,
10:21usually it's a lot of drum stuff. Like there's something with the drum pattern.
10:23We need to shift here. And then when we go and track, it's really fast. Like we,
10:28we go and record three songs in three days. It's that fast. And people are like, how do you record
10:33three songs in three days? I'm like, it's, we just go and we don't just know, like,
10:37what are we going to put here? It's like, we already know.
10:40Yeah. And it's funny, you know, listen, if the song ever sucks, it is the drummer's fault.
10:43It's like the goalie's fault. It's always their fault.
10:46Drummers are goalies, dude. Right. And Joe, our drummer is a goalie and it's, he's perfect.
10:51He's like, he's, you know, like all drummers are crazy. Right. Just like, just like goalies.
10:56Right. They're not, they're not hockey players. So it's like drummers are like, yeah. And Joe's an
11:02amazing drummer and I've heard he's an amazing goalie. I've seen him play goal, but he's pulled
11:08his groin or something. So he says he can't play goal anymore, which is, which sucks for him.
11:14All right. Well, when, when, when you guys come through Detroit, we're going to have to get him
11:17in some sort of net. I always have my sticks with me, so we will have to do something.
11:22Well, it's gotta be, I mean, we could probably, they must like, uh, it's out of season. So
11:27there's any rinks where they just melt the ice and you do like, you guys are going to be three
11:31blocks away from the LCA. Maybe I can make a call and we can go to go in there and
11:35just go on to
11:36practice ice. Dude, let's go. That would be cool if we could get never been there. Yeah. Do you guys
11:42travel with your gear? You guys, I mean, play it all on the road? Uh, no, but if we did,
11:48we would
11:48have it. I think we have some hockey sticks with us. We have to sometimes preface, uh, so they take
11:54it out of storage, like golf clubs. I had to make sure that they took my golf clubs out of
11:59storage
11:59in, in Toronto. And now it's on the truck. So we want to play golf. My clubs are on the
12:04truck.
12:05Yeah. And, um, by the way, I, I, isn't that the law that you have to travel with your hockey
12:10sticks if you're a Canadian band, correct? Yeah. It's ID. Got the Sherwood. What do you got? Oh,
12:17what's all that? Wow. Yeah. What were those old sticks? The plastic ones? Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
12:22Yeah. They were called like super flex or something. Yeah. Remember they're plastic. You
12:28could bend them. So they were like scoops. Well, no, we used to put them on the, uh, we used
12:32to,
12:32we used to heat them up on the, on the stove. Remember? Oh yeah. Yeah. Of course you'd bend them
12:35up
12:36like that. So yeah. Speaking of golf, you're, you, you're, you're pretty good at golf, aren't
12:40you? I golf a lot. My handicap has gone up a little bit, but I, yeah, I was down to
12:45like
12:45a six handicap or something, but, uh, but I love it. I played a lot. I do a lot of
12:50golf
12:50trips. Me, me and Darren from, uh, steel Panther. We, we put a trip on once a year. So if
12:57you play
12:57golf, man, you can come next year. We do a tournament, uh, and it's my team versus his team.
13:04So we got some musicians come out and, uh, I've, I've, my team has beat his two years
13:09in a row. So he's furious. So that's a stick. So, so what, uh, what, who was on your team?
13:14Uh, well, I got Dean, Dean from the bands on my team. Dave played the first year. He couldn't
13:19play the, this year, but, uh, yeah, then just a bunch of buddies. And it's funny because
13:25like Darren's team, they're all like straight edge and we'll go out for dinner and they're like
13:29water. And my team was like blackout drunk guys aren't showing up. Like, dude, we have one guy,
13:36Gary, who was like a stick. He's like a, he's like a one handicap. He's so good. And he second
13:43day, he didn't show for dinner. They had to carry him back to his room. He was blacked out. He
13:47woke
13:47up at six 30 in the morning and beat and won his, and won his round to beat the guy.
13:55And I'm like, you can't, I'm like, we're like, you guys can't even beat a bunch of drunks.
13:59So it was pretty fun.
14:00Have you ever golfed with somebody like Alice or anything?
14:04No, you know, we, Alice, uh, Cooper, he, he was on one of our songs. So on Savage is our
14:10fifth
14:10record. I went and flew to his house in Phoenix. And, uh, so just to be there when he recorded
14:17his
14:17parts.
14:19How cool is that?
14:20It was great. Just went over to his house and his mom was there. And, and he, the morning of,
14:25or the day before I flew in and they're like, oh, we need to change the time to the afternoon.
14:30And I was like, oh shoot. Okay. Cause originally it was going to be like 10 in the morning or
14:34something. I'm like, I wonder what happened. And it was cause he was golfing.
14:37Golfing. Yeah.
14:38So I wish I, I, I wish I said, Hey, I golf too. I'd love to go. I probably could
14:44have went.
14:45He probably would have been like, yeah, yeah, sure. You can come.
14:47Did you knock on his door and say, uh, is Alice here?
14:50Yeah. I don't know if he likes Alice.
14:53No, he does.
14:53Yeah. Yeah. No, his mom lives with him. So very, very sweet lady. So I love Alice is such
14:59a cool guy, man. He's so down to earth and he's in it for all the right reasons. And
15:04it, I golf keeps him young. I swear. So I'm going to keep golfing.
15:07Yeah. No. Um, my friend Damon Johnson was on, was in his band for years. And he said
15:12that every single night before they went on stage, uh, Damon would get a tap on the
15:16shin from Alice's cane. And Alice would say something like six 45 in the lobby. And that
15:21was key. That was their, their code for we're going golfing tomorrow morning. So it happened
15:25all the time.
15:26Yeah.
15:26Yeah. Damon, he's another sweet guy. I haven't seen him in a while.
15:29He's down there in Nashville. But, uh, you know, I heard a conversation the other day
15:33and I thought about you guys, somebody was talking about walking across Abbey road and
15:38they actually walked in the Abbey road studios and they were like, Oh, you just can't walk
15:41in there. So they got kind of got thrown up, but you guys recorded there, right?
15:46No, we, we, uh, we recorded down the street and the lady that worked at the studio we were
15:52at, um, she used to work at Abbey road. So she's like, you guys want to go there and
15:57just go get a tour. We're like, yeah. So she just hooked it up. So we went there and did
16:01a tour and, uh, yeah, it was amazing. We, you know, I played on the Beatles piano and
16:07they took us all around and to where they recorded all their stuff. It was pretty phenomenal.
16:12They were doing the soundtrack for Downton Abbey while we were there. So my mom was very
16:16excited.
16:19Yeah. You know, um, yeah, I thought you guys recorded there for some reason. Did you guys
16:23get a picture to walking across the street?
16:25Yeah. Yeah. And it's, I'll tell you, man, the people, they won't, they'll run you over.
16:29That was exactly what this person was saying. They'll they're sick of it. They will not
16:34slow down. They're just so sick of people stopping in the middle and take photos. Cause
16:37they're just like, Oh yeah. So, uh, yeah, you'll be very careful when you do that.
16:42Yeah. Yeah, no doubt. And, you know, um, getting back to the EP, cause I wanted to ask you about
16:47this, um, with the EP thing, you know, obviously when you guys started some 20, some years ago,
16:51you put records on, you put CDs out in the whole nine yards. And now is it weird to kind
16:56of navigate how people consume music? Yeah. It's, it's a, it's a, uh, it's, what is it?
17:04Uh, you know, it, it's interesting. It's, I love it. I love it because now the fans have
17:11all the control. Um, but you have to, you really have to learn how to do this new stuff.
17:16I'm not a big fan of the social media. I think that's, it's just harm. That's harmful. It's
17:21sounds like such a curmudgeon old man thing to say, but, but man, I mean, every day they're
17:26getting, sending us stuff to do for Tik TOK and we got to do all these trends. And I don't
17:30like
17:30this is, this has nothing to do with music, you know, but it's a new world. You have to adapt
17:37or
17:37die. So I, you know, and we went through everything. I mean, we didn't start on cassettes,
17:42but we started on CDs and then we went to, you know, uh, uh, to downloads, which was so weird.
17:49And then finally streaming and now it's a streaming world. So it's all coming around. I, I, I, I'm
17:56really kind of like enjoying it and, and seeing all the different ways that to, to make it work.
18:03And I find that now we can do stuff ourselves, which is great. I, the years of being on a
18:08major
18:08label and feeling we had no control. And now it's just like, man, we can do it. We pay for
18:14our recordings ourselves so we can recoup that through selling vinyl and stuff. And it's great.
18:19Yeah. And touring and stuff. Yeah. I forgot about that. Yeah. So you guys, you guys aren't like,
18:23uh, yeah, nobody's holding you down. I mean, as a band, you guys say, Hey, let's try this
18:28that we couldn't do when we were on the record label and you know, whatever you guys get together.
18:33I mean, there's, we, we are our own A&R. I mean, dude, like some of the, like the meetings
18:39we had, I remember we had to beg for our fifth record. We had to beg to go into the
18:44studio
18:45and we had to bring Howard Benson with us, the producer to fly, fly him to New York to
18:50sit down at the label in the A&R's office, let them let us record six songs. And he would
18:56just sit there and be like, I don't, I don't like the song. I don't like, I don't like the
19:01lyrics and they just tear apart your stuff. And you're like, you're trying not to get
19:05up and just freak out. Right. And be like, if this, I'm out of here. Um, now it's just
19:11like the four of us sit around going, uh, you really, I really liked this song. Let's
19:15record it. And that's it. That's the end of the conversation.
19:18That's interesting. Yeah. I know. I talked to Chris Fain from a formerly from slip now
19:23and this made a lot of news and every day, every, every day I still punch on my Facebook
19:27and there's this story, but, uh, yeah, he, he told me that Rick Rubin didn't do much.
19:32Do you ever, you ever, you ever, you know, right. Cause they did, he did the Iowa. Do
19:35they do Iowa with him? I think it might've been a subliminal versus or something. Yeah.
19:40I don't think, I don't think Rick Rubin is doing anyone's debut record, but, uh, yeah,
19:44but, uh, he, they did some stuff, but, uh, yeah, that just reminded me when you're talking
19:48about Howard Benson, I mean, obviously a legendary figure in the business and he must, it must've
19:52been, I don't know, soul crushing to sit there and listen to some of the stuff he was saying
19:56probably, huh? It's terrible. I mean, imagine, imagine if you just like made a bunch of stuff
20:01and people were just like, this is crap. Right. And you know, just because they're in a bad
20:05mood or they had a weird day, you know, and you're like, man, I don't need this shit.
20:09But, uh, yeah, no, Howard Benson's great. He is, he is, he's the opposite of Rick Rubin.
20:14We did four records with him and he, I mean, he was a massive part of our success, man, man.
20:19We had a lot of our biggest hits with Howard and me and Howard are great friends. Now we
20:24actually, we golf all the time back in, uh, in LA. He's in, he hits me up. He's a, once
20:29every
20:30couple of weeks, want to golf, want to go golfing? I'm like, let's go. So it's good. It's good.
20:33It all reversed back to golfing. Yeah. I didn't realize you guys worked with him so much, but
20:37yeah, he's worked on so many things. Um, you know, you, you say that he was a big part of
20:41your
20:42success. Did you guys bring songs to him and how much did he like recraft them or maybe change
20:47things for you guys? Lots. I mean, he would sit in pre-production with us and be like, why don't
20:53you guys go, well, you gotta hear, what if you went here? And then the third one, you went down
20:59and just stay on that chord or we went to town and we would try it. Yeah. You know, he
21:03was really
21:03involved in a lot of stuff. Great with the vocal stuff. He would sit and I knew if he liked
21:08the song,
21:09he'd want to read the lyrics first before we record. So he would be like, let's see the lyrics. And
21:13he
21:13would read the lyrics and he's like, so what are you trying to say in this bridge? And I'd explain
21:18it to him. And sometimes he'd be like, oh, okay. Or sometimes he'd be like, I think he can do
21:23better.
21:23I think, you know what? Let's not record today. Why don't you go back to the hotel or whatever and
21:30rewrite this. So I'd go back and I would just like rewrite it and I'd be like, it would be
21:33so
21:33much better. Then I'd come the next morning. I was like, dude, dude, this is it. All right,
21:38let's record. So yeah, he was always a big cheerleader and, and the final version, like when
21:46we would hear when everything was done, we were just like always really blown away. We're like,
21:49wow, this is us. This sounds too good. You know, did you do that? Did you catch yourself
21:58subconsciously writing and fear that he wouldn't like it? No, he was not that kind of guy. It was
22:04more like the A&R that I was worried about. Okay. I can remember getting a call from my A
22:07&R guy
22:08being like, I think, cause I just had this course where it's repeated the same line. He's like,
22:12why? And I think it needs to be more involved. I don't like it's repeating the line. And I said
22:16to
22:16him like, is this going to be a single? He's like, no. I'm like, well then who cares? And then
22:21he was
22:21like, yeah, you're right. And that was the end of it. And I was like, yeah. Like, what are we
22:26doing
22:26here? No, it's, uh, I think for me, like I'm always trying to get approval for others. That's
22:34something probably from when I was a kid. So like for me, I'm always trying to get approval from the
22:38band. I'm always trying to write a song that the band will hear and go, wow, that's awesome. Or
22:43write, you know, a riff that Dave will be like, that's so good. Or, you know, I'm sure the same
22:49for them. They always, but at the end of the day, like it's usually just the band, the band's just
22:53trying to get approval from the band from one another, which is cool. It's a very pure
22:57thing. Yeah. I guess that's probably at the end of it. That's the, uh, yeah, the purest
23:01thing because it's like you make music for yourself. Yeah. And that's what you have to
23:06do. I mean, I, I try to remind people it's like, you know, when you started out, Hey, your
23:11only fan was like your mom. So writing songs for your mom. No. So then you get fans and then
23:17all of a sudden everything changes. Well, maybe we should write this kind of song. Cause the fans
23:20will like it's like, no, man, you just got to write how you want to write. And then
23:25the fans don't like it. I, there's not much you can do. And, but, but there has to be
23:29some songs you write where you think, man, this is going to go over great on stage.
23:34Yes. We definitely have songs where like, like bad girlfriend was that song. Bad girlfriend
23:39was a song the label hated. They didn't want it on the record. We had a fight to get it
23:43on the record. And then we had a fight to make it a single. We refused to tour because they
23:49didn't want to release as a single. And we said, well, we're not going to tour. We're going to go
23:53home. Forget it. They're like, Oh my God. And that came from fan interaction. We play the song
23:58every night on stage. And the fans were like, they'd go nuts. And we're like, there's something
24:03about this song, man. We just didn't know what it was. And we were right. So we kind of, you
24:07know,
24:08we revel on that. I was going to say, I never heard of a band refusing to tour because the
24:13record
24:14label would release a single. That's great. Well, they just, they, they didn't like the song,
24:18but they want to release a ballad, like a pop song or like, you'll kill us. You'll destroy
24:22the band. We have to, we need a big hit. We need to be rock. We need, we're a rock
24:26band.
24:26We need a rock hit. Let's go. And they thank God they agreed. Yeah. And it, well, not only
24:33did they agree, but it worked for you guys. Yeah. And we didn't know. Nobody heard it.
24:38Anybody that says like, Oh, I knew that's not nobody. Howard didn't either. That was a song
24:43on the Howard. Didn't read the lyrics on that one. Cause when we started tracking that song,
24:47the opening line, as you may know, is my girlfriend's a dick magnet. Yeah. And so Howard's
24:54like, all right, let's just sing a song. So he pushes record and I sing the line. He stops
24:58and he's like, no way, man. There's no way. I'm like, what do you mean? He's like,
25:04no, you're not singing that. I'm like, yeah, no, that's it. He's like, no, come on. What?
25:09Like, there's no way. I'm like, just, I'm like, just push record. I told him like, just,
25:13let's just get this push record. So we blasted through that song. Nobody knew. That's just a,
25:19what a fluke. Dude, that's great. I never heard this before. You know, the thing I,
25:24the thing I think that that song resonates with people is because it's so real. Every dude has had
25:31a girlfriend who's a dick magnet and you go somewhere and you can't keep her away from other
25:37guys. And you know, it's funny too, is I'm just sitting here talking to you. You guys have a
25:40pretty good mix of guys and girl fans, don't you? It's pretty 50 50. Yeah. It's we, I remember
25:47opening for Motley Crue and God smack was the direct support. And we went on right before God
25:51smack. And I remember going on stage and all the dudes were like this waiting for God smack. And
25:57all of their girlfriends or wives were out of their seat going nuts, wearing bad girlfriend shirts.
26:03And we're like, okay, now we just got to figure out how to get the dudes.
26:08Yeah. That's like, uh, people find it hard to believe, but, uh, Buck Cherry's crazy bitch,
26:12I think is liked well more by girls and by guys. Girls love that song.
26:18Yeah. Which is so weird. Right. And same with bad girlfriend when they love,
26:22I guess they want to be a bad girlfriend. I don't know, but it's true. Like that definitely
26:26is women love that song. And, uh, yeah, we hit a bit of a wall with the women love the
26:33bitch came
26:34back too. Yeah. Yeah. Which is weird, but we found out that they don't want to wear a shirt that
26:38says
26:39that found out the hard way. We sold, we sold merch and then it wasn't selling well.
26:45Is that right? Panties or something? The bitch came back. It came back. I don't know. I always say
26:51we should do more of those shirts. And now it's just like, no, that's great. Well, I'll tell you
26:56what, we'll wrap things up here with you. Uh, uh, Tyler, I gotta, I gotta ask you a couple more
26:59things though. First, uh, uh, so the hockey season hasn't started. And I just told this story the
27:04other day on the radio, how, how I was watching, uh, the Pittsburgh Penguins hoist the Stanley cup
27:11with you guys at that hotel here in Detroit. Remember that back in 1817, whatever it was. Yeah. You
27:21by the way, I think Dean and I were on the bus with Scotty Austin to like three in the
27:24morning
27:25or something, but that's another story for another time. But, um, so, uh, um, I mean,
27:29the season hasn't even started, nothing's happening, but, uh, what are you thinking about for this year?
27:35Yikes. Well, I'm a Canucks fan. So we just stopped right there. Yeah. You know, I play hockey all the
27:40time with, uh, with Brennan Morrison. You know that? Yes. Who? Oh, dude. And he was like, that's back in
27:46the day, man. That was kind of just like when I used to watch the Canucks and Trent Morrison play
27:51with, uh, with Brewery. Was that after Brewery? I believe, no, I believe he did. Yeah. Yeah. Oh,
27:57dude, that was the time. I mean, they went to the cup with, oh, that was amazing. Yeah. I don't
28:01know. I, you know, I'm kind of, I would love to see Canadian team win, man. It's been, I mean,
28:06Montreal Canadiens in 93, it's been 33 years since the Canadian team won. Edmonton's come close.
28:12Montreal's looking good. Yeah. Toronto, who cares? They're never going to win.
28:18How about the Detroit Red Wings? How about them? I always loved the Detroit Red Wings. I'm
28:24always rooting for Detroit. Uh, nothing like a dumpster fire this summer. Are they going
28:29to do well this year? I don't know. I hope so. Right now we don't have a GM. We don't
28:33know
28:33if our captain's coming back. It's kind of a little bit of a mess. Yikes. Well, we'll see.
28:39We'll see what happens. I mean, Buffalo looks really good. I mean, they just need, they just
28:44need to pull off those training wheels and they can be really good. They, they, they've
28:48lost a couple of key guys this year as well. Hey, real fast before I leave, what does that
28:52shirt say? Oh, that's what I thought. So yeah, you're not going to believe this dude. Yeah.
28:59You're not going to believe this on the way here. I stopped at a, I stopped at an ATM, uh,
29:05right down here on eight mile. The woman next to me in the ATM had that shirt on.
29:10That's amazing. I know. How crazy is that? This is, I actually got this from Dolly Parton.
29:15I actually took this photo. You puffer was now, I'm just kidding.
29:20I was going to say, how did that woman have the same exact shirt? That's crazy.
29:24Yeah, exactly. I don't know where I got this. I got, I think I'd given to me or I got
29:28out of some store. Yeah. Well, that's too bad. I thought it was only the one and only.
29:31No, that's, I mean, but how insane, how, how like crazy, I mean, just like an hour ago.
29:37Yeah, that's weird. Well, maybe there's something's going on with Dolly. Maybe that's
29:39just the world of universe. Yeah. Maybe we'll go on tour with Dolly Parton. Yeah, that'd be
29:45awesome. She did. She did do something Motley Crue. Did she not? Yeah. I think she sang,
29:49uh, I want to say home sweet home. Yeah, that was it. Yeah. She's amazing. Well, listen,
29:54we'll see you guys here on the 23rd. Like I said, funeral songs part one, uh, is coming out
29:58on September 4th. And, uh, yeah, the 23rd, uh, bring your hockey sticks and we'll see
30:03if we can get you guys. Have you ever been in the LCA yet? No, I don't think we've ever
30:07been there. So it's really cool. They have a, they have a practice rink in the rink and
30:12they've got their regular rink and you know, that's where the Pistons and the Red Wings
30:15both play and they got restaurants all around the concourse. It's really cool actually.
30:18Yeah. I'm trying to think, uh, I'll ask Dean cause we've been to so many different rinks
30:22on tour, you know, like our bucket list has tried to go and watch a game and every single
30:27rink. I think we've gotten to almost all of them. I mean, we had to have been seeing the
30:33Red Wings play there. No, it's, it's, it's nice. I know. Yeah. Sometimes it all starts
30:36to run together, but, um, well, thanks for your time, dude. Safe travels. We'll see you here
30:40in a couple of weeks. Yeah. I'll see you in a couple of weeks, man. Good to see you.
