00:00Ah, yes. Shine Squad. The NFL is back. Von Miller returns to Texas. Quarterback battles in Vegas, Atlanta, and Cleveland.
00:10Jackson Dart's second home is a blue tent. Who are the worst weekend? Jada Daniels or the L.A. Dodgers?
00:17Plus, how I am going to remember my guy, the great Russell Westbrook. All ahead next on a Monday Shine
00:24Time.
00:33You know, I always had a little blue on my heart since I was, you know, a little boy. You
00:39know, I always paid attention to the Dallas Cowboys. And, you know, my earliest memory of playing football included the
00:46Dallas Cowboys. I heard my daddy screaming in the back and I ran back there to see what was going
00:50on. And he was screaming because the Dallas Cowboys had scored a touchdown.
00:53So, that's my earliest memory of playing football. And to be back, you know, here, to be back home, it's
00:59a dream within a dream. It's like Inception. You know, the movie with Leonardo DiCaprio.
01:04Leonardo DiCaprio, yeah.
01:05My dream has always been to play in the NFL and, you know, to play for the Dallas Cowboys. It's
01:09a dream within a dream.
01:11Von Miller is headed back home. You see it in his tweets.
01:15The DeSoto native and Texas A&M alum, now a member of the Dallas Cowboys. And honestly, this is absolutely,
01:23positively incredible. I can't get enough.
01:26Let me tell you something. The Dallas Cowboys absolutely deserve so much credit here for, at the end of the
01:32day, signing Von Miller.
01:34Von Miller is the Sunday on top of a team that I believe is going to absolutely rock and roll.
01:43I think the Dallas Cowboys are going to be terrific this year. Tremendous this year.
01:49And I don't expect Von Miller to play like the first ballot Hall of Famer that he is.
01:54I don't expect him to play at the end of the day like the ball player that we saw win
01:59the Super Bowl MVP in Super Bowl 50.
02:01I think you can realistically expect that you're going to get the Von Miller we saw in Washington last year,
02:10where he sacked the quarterback nine times, which would have led the Dallas Cowboys.
02:15Von Miller, seed quarterback, hit quarterback. 15th season, 138 and a half sacks.
02:22Von Miller is absolutely the right guy in terms of tangibles and intangibles.
02:27What he's going to do to help Ezraku, Donovan Ezraku, who I absolutely love.
02:32He struggled last year with Matt Eberflusch calling the plays on defense.
02:36Rookie out of Boston College, big believer in Azraku, big believer in Malachi Lawrence,
02:41and big believer in this guy.
02:44Von Miller and this resume and the fact that he is a Super Bowl champion a couple of times,
02:50understands what it takes to navigate and get to the quarterback and be part of a rotation.
02:55And I think he is going to be so happy and highly motivated here when you take a look at
03:01the ability
03:01to go home and take the Dallas Cowboys to a place they haven't been in 30 years.
03:07I'm telling you right here, right now, and Von Miller to me is the cherry on top of a championship
03:13Sunday.
03:14The Dallas Cowboys have not played on championship Sunday in 30 years.
03:20That is going to happen this season.
03:24I love the Cowboys.
03:26I love what they've done on defense.
03:27I love what Von Miller brings to the table.
03:30I love how motivated he is.
03:32I love, and we mentioned the young cats rushing the passer.
03:36How about bringing in Rashawn Gary?
03:38How about the fact that Quinn Williams just got the bag last week, the former Jet Miller, this defense?
03:43He was phenomenal when the Cowboys traded for him in the middle of last year.
03:47And I can't stress enough how much I love these Dallas Cowboys.
03:51Let me tell you something.
03:53Take the over on wins.
03:54That is a lock.
03:56Take them to make the playoffs.
03:57And I would not be surprised if they ended up winning the conference.
04:01Seriously.
04:02Like, I expect the Dallas Cowboys to play on championship Sunday.
04:06And when we make our picks on shine time and officially lock it in and put everything in stone,
04:12like, to me, it comes down to the Cowboys and the Rams on who's going to win the NFC.
04:17I think the world of the Dallas Cowboys this year because the offseason has been quiet.
04:24Not the normal nonsense from Jerry Jones and company.
04:28Think about last year with Micah Parsons, and he's lying on the table,
04:31and they have to make the trade, and it derailed everything.
04:34I was high on the Cowboys last year, and then, poof, that goes up in smoke.
04:38So, I love the Cowboys this year.
04:41I can't get enough of the Dallas Cowboys this year.
04:43I think Dak Prescott's going to have a monster season.
04:46I think that you're going to see Dak Prescott dominate, C.D. Lamb dominate,
04:50George Pickens, Jerry Jones handled that brilliantly.
04:54When you take a look at what transpired in the offseason
04:57and how he handled the franchise tag,
04:59and you keep Pickens hungry and motivated,
05:01Javante Williams running the football,
05:04and Christian Parker coaching up this defense,
05:07and Von Miller and Christian Parker were together
05:10during their time in Denver, I just love this.
05:14Von Miller wants to be in Dallas.
05:16Von Miller wants to deliver the Cowboys the Super Bowl.
05:20Obviously, he was in Denver with DeMarcus Ware,
05:22who's a Cowboy legend.
05:24This just feels like a perfect match.
05:28I think that Von Miller's going to be a situational rusher.
05:31He'll play on third downs.
05:33Don't need him to be the Denver Broncos version of what we saw
05:37when he was carving out his Hall of Fame career.
05:41Love every single second of this signing.
05:44I think it is absolutely Miller time,
05:47and time for the Dallas Cowboys to shine in 2026.
05:51Von Miller was the big headline that capped off week one
05:54of the NFL preseason, but there's so much more to get into.
05:57It is time for my Monday musings beginning in Vegas.
06:03Overall, I felt that the group that I was in with,
06:07they blocked fantastic.
06:10They had great routes.
06:11The run game was good.
06:14Unfortunately, I let my teammates down today,
06:17but it's a growing experience.
06:22And, you know, I feel like we're all growing,
06:24and it showed me that I need to grow a lot.
06:29I mean, Fernando Mendoza thinks he let his teammates down,
06:32and honestly, I have to smile,
06:35because this guy has its when it comes to
06:38how to be a franchise quarterback,
06:40and he's just a rookie, right?
06:42He knows how to talk to the press.
06:44He knows how to own or command the room,
06:46and I just absolutely love Fernando Mendoza.
06:49And Fernando Mendoza looked the part
06:51in his preseason debut.
06:53The numbers, strong.
06:55You'll watch him, great.
06:57Fernando Mendoza should be the starting quarterback
07:00for the Vegas Raiders in week number one of the season,
07:04and it's obviously about the bigger picture
07:08when it comes to Fernando Mendoza.
07:10Fernando Mendoza, when you take a look at his resume,
07:13we're talking about someone who won the Heisman Trophy,
07:16won a championship, one of the greatest single seasons
07:18in the history of college football, winning at Indiana.
07:24Understand the fact that Fernando Mendoza,
07:29the volume of starts that he had in college,
07:34go back to Cal, then Indiana.
07:37This is not some kind of first-round pick
07:39or number one overall pick at the quarterback position
07:42that's not ready and needs time to develop
07:46at the quarterback position.
07:48Fernando Mendoza has everything that you want
07:52when it comes to being a ready-made quarterback.
07:55He's super smart.
07:57I think Kling Kubiak is unbelievable calling the plays,
08:01and I think this should be an unbelievable match in marriage,
08:05ready for prime time the minute the season starts.
08:08There's also this.
08:09Kirk Cousins stinks.
08:10I don't think enough people are talking about this.
08:13If you've watched,
08:14and I'm not talking about the Washington Redskins,
08:16you like that, you like that version.
08:18I'm not talking about the Minnesota Vikings version.
08:21I love that version of Kirk Cousins.
08:23I'm talking about the Atlanta Falcons version.
08:28Kirk Cousins has been, by the eyeball test,
08:32by any kind of stat you want,
08:35the worst starting quarterback in the NFL
08:38over the last couple of seasons.
08:41Who wants to fight me on that?
08:42If you start talking about a guy you don't trust
08:45with the football, who looks completely shot,
08:48shell of his former self, we're talking about Kirk Cousins.
08:51So I think when you factor in Mendoza,
08:55what he did in college, starting over 30 games,
08:59when you start thinking about Mendoza as a top pick,
09:03Mendoza being ready to rock and roll,
09:06Mendoza having Ashton Gentey,
09:08who I think is going to have a phenomenal second season,
09:10Brock Bowers, who to me,
09:12with all due respect to Trey McBride and company,
09:14Brock Bowers is the best pass-catching tight end
09:17in the NFL,
09:18and you have Clint Kubiak,
09:21who was brought in for this purpose,
09:23to play someone like Mendoza,
09:25develop someone like Mendoza.
09:27To me, it's kind of a Ben Johnson feel
09:29when you look at it.
09:30And then you take a look at the schedule.
09:32The Raiders should be able to win.
09:35The Raiders should be able to go out and rock and roll.
09:39The Raiders have Miami week number one.
09:42There's no reason why when you see the Chargers,
09:45the Saints, I'm including Kansas City,
09:48and then New England in New England,
09:50which, by the way, in a dreadful season,
09:53they won in New England last year.
09:55The Raiders, if they start the right quarterback,
09:58should be able to start the season three and two.
10:01I don't know if people have forgotten
10:03about the memory of Al Davis, just win, baby,
10:05but this is weird.
10:07The fact that the Raiders are not prioritizing
10:10the best quarterback on the team,
10:11the number one overall pick,
10:13the guy who equals hope.
10:15They signed Tyler Lindenbaum,
10:17best center in the NFL.
10:18He's going to be the ultimate protector for Mendoza.
10:22I don't even understand
10:23why they're messing around with Kirk Cousins.
10:26What are they waiting for?
10:27It makes absolutely positively no sense.
10:29Mendoza looked the part,
10:31inspiring for all of Raider Nation.
10:33And in a related story, Kirk Cousins is awful.
10:37From Sin City to the city that never sleeps,
10:40Jackson Dart had a rollercoaster first preseason game.
10:43He led a touchdown drive
10:45with a throw to rookie Malachi Fields
10:47after returning to the field,
10:49following being checked for a concussion
10:50after being sacked for the second time
10:52in his many drives.
10:54As far as the blue tent,
10:57I really respect the rules
11:03and the thought behind NFL has
11:07of keeping players healthy
11:08and reviewing things.
11:10But at the same time,
11:12I'm still puzzled by
11:14it just feeling like every time that I get hit,
11:17I just find my way in there.
11:21I don't like any parts
11:23of what Jackson Dart has to say.
11:26I think the Jackson Darts
11:28needs to take a look in the mirror here.
11:30Jackson Dart was concussed last year.
11:33Jackson Dart missed a couple of games
11:35with a concussion.
11:36The NFL brilliantly tries to protect players
11:40when it comes to concussion protocol.
11:42And if someone gets smacked like Dart did
11:46over the weekend,
11:48especially someone with concussion history,
11:51they are going to be checked into the blue tents
11:54and make sure that they are ready to play
11:58in the upcoming ensuing play and ensuing drive.
12:01Because if you are going to have repeated concussions
12:04and we're talking about brain damage
12:06and we're talking about headaches
12:08and anything and everything in between,
12:12that's obviously under the umbrella
12:13of not what you want for someone like Jackson Dart
12:16or any NFL player.
12:18So for me,
12:20I think Jackson Dart needs to adjust his play.
12:25I think Jackson Dart needs to realize
12:27that availability is part of the ability here
12:30when you're a franchise quarterback.
12:32And let me say this again for the record.
12:35I love Jackson Dart.
12:37I love Jackson Dart's swagger.
12:38I love his athleticism.
12:40I love his arm.
12:41He needs to be able to stay on the football field.
12:44And for him to tell the press
12:46that he's puzzled by repeated concussion checks,
12:50that bothers me.
12:52That's unacceptable.
12:53That's not what you want
12:55from your franchise quarterback.
12:57Also, I applaud John Harbaugh,
12:59who didn't take the bait from his quarterback.
13:02Obviously, hey,
13:03the Giants officially have an adult in the room.
13:06And Harbaugh talked about
13:08how Jackson Dart needs to be protected.
13:11And it obviously was Tyrone Tracy,
13:13the running back,
13:14who missed the block.
13:15And in a related story,
13:16you have Najee Harris coming in
13:18for a visit today
13:19with the New York football Giants.
13:20And listen,
13:22if you can't block,
13:23you're not going to play.
13:25You might not even be on the team.
13:27Now,
13:28I do love the fact
13:30that after Dart's was out for a couple plays
13:32and Jameis Winston comes in
13:34and Winston executes the first down
13:36on third and forever,
13:37Dart comes back in and bam,
13:39touchdown to Malachi Fields.
13:41And that, to me,
13:42is as big a story as any
13:44if you're a fan of the New York football Giants.
13:47I love Fields.
13:48I thought Malachi was terrific at Notre Dame,
13:50great in college.
13:51I thought that was a steal of a draft pick.
13:54And I think that the vibes for the Giants,
13:57if Jackson Dart can protect himself
14:00and Jackson Dart can be healthy for a season
14:03and make sure he's available
14:04and the Giants' pass protection gets better,
14:06listen,
14:07I think the Giants have big-time weapons.
14:09You see Malik Nabors
14:11trending in the right direction.
14:12I really am impressed
14:14with what I've seen from Fields.
14:16I thought that was a huge deal.
14:18I love what I've seen from the defense.
14:20And when you check the Giants' schedule,
14:22I really think that the Giants
14:24have a golden opportunity
14:25to start the season 4-2.
14:27I firmly believe that.
14:29So I think the Giants' vibes,
14:32if they can get their quarterback
14:33to understand what ultimately
14:35the NFL is trying to do
14:37with concussion protocol
14:38and he can take care of himself
14:40and the offensive line can take care of him,
14:43listen,
14:44I really think that the Giants
14:46are headed in the right direction.
14:48I was energized watching Dart play,
14:51energized watching him throw the fields,
14:53not energized by anything he had to say
14:56after the game.
14:58But I thought there were a lot of positives
15:00from the Giants,
15:01a lot of things moving in the right direction.
15:03But Jackson Dart needs to both check himself
15:07and protect himself
15:08for the New York football Giants
15:10to live up to the capabilities
15:12that I think that is had in front of them
15:14for this upcoming season.
15:16Speaking of quarterbacks
15:16with concussion concerns,
15:18Tua Tunga-Vailoa made his preseason debut
15:20for the Falcons this weekend.
15:21Two series, no points,
15:23one first down, one fumble.
15:27Definitely not up to standard,
15:30not even up to par.
15:31You know, we'll start with the first drive.
15:35The second play,
15:36just being able to catch the snap,
15:39you know, little things like that.
15:41You know, just thinking about it,
15:43like what we put out there
15:45is not a reflection of the hard work,
15:48the hard work that we've put in
15:50the first two weeks,
15:51you know, into training camp.
15:53And it does no justice for,
15:55you know, the work that our coaches
15:57as well, you know, have implemented.
15:59So, you know, it starts with me.
16:01I got to be better with that.
16:03Tua Tunga-Vailoa leads the league
16:06in losers' lament at press conferences.
16:10His press conferences are the worst.
16:13Soul-sucking.
16:14Ask a Miami Dolphins fan.
16:16Last year, how many times
16:18did he have a terrible press conference
16:19and then have to have ensuing
16:21apology follow-up press conferences
16:24that were just absolutely
16:26the theater of the absurd?
16:28Tua Tunga-Vailoa,
16:29there's no reason why he should be
16:31in Atlanta.
16:32And the Atlanta Falcons, to me,
16:34of any team in the NFL,
16:37have the worst vibes
16:38in the month of August.
16:39And I don't say that
16:40with any joy or jubilation.
16:42I love the owner.
16:43I love Matt Ryan.
16:44I love Ian Cunningham.
16:45I love Kevin Stefanski.
16:46I love the new brass.
16:48I love B. John Robinson
16:49and Kyle Pitts and Drake London.
16:51And I want to find reasons
16:53to believe in the Atlanta Falcons.
16:56I can't find them.
16:57Tua looked atrocious
16:58in his first preseason game.
17:01Tua was terrible
17:02when he was thrown out of Miami
17:04for turning it over
17:05and having all these
17:06terrible press conferences.
17:07Tua is a medical
17:09and a health risk.
17:10Now, he's only there right now
17:12because Michael Penix Jr.,
17:13coming off of his injury,
17:15has not been cleared.
17:16And let me tell you something.
17:18Whether it's today,
17:19tomorrow, next week,
17:21the week after,
17:22and I know it's a new offense
17:23and new offensive coaching staff
17:25and head coach
17:26for the Atlanta Falcons
17:27and for Penix Jr.,
17:28I don't care.
17:29If he's cleared
17:30over the next couple weeks,
17:32especially because he's not Tua
17:33and because he has rapport
17:35with the aforementioned
17:36B. John Robinson
17:37and Kyle Pitts
17:38and Drake London,
17:39Michael Penix Jr. has to play
17:41because I've seen
17:41what's going on
17:42with Tua Tonga-Vailoa.
17:43And frankly,
17:44if you're a Falcons fan,
17:46it's dreadful.
17:47Speaking of bad vibes,
17:49you saw James Pierce
17:50get suspended eight games
17:52and deservedly so.
17:54He's not going to see jail time,
17:55but when you understand
17:56what transpired
17:57with domestic violence,
17:58he earned his suspension.
18:00I thought it was going to be
18:01in the camp
18:02in the range of four to six games.
18:04I'm thrilled that the NFL
18:06is dropping the hammer
18:08because the allegations
18:10are despicable
18:11and disgusting.
18:12And if the NFL
18:13wants a stronger suspension
18:14for someone like Pierce,
18:16I think that's a terrific job
18:18by Roger Goodell and company.
18:19Now, Pierce, obviously,
18:21was one of two first-round picks
18:22for the Atlanta Falcons
18:24in the now-fired regime.
18:25Terry Fontenot, their GM.
18:26Raheem Morris, their head coach.
18:28And Pierce is obviously
18:29going to be suspended
18:30eight games.
18:31The other first-round pick
18:33in 2025 was Jalen Walker,
18:35who we talked about
18:36a couple weeks ago.
18:38Obviously, he's done for the season,
18:39got hurt in practice
18:40with a torn ACL.
18:42So that is a mess.
18:43So now, think about
18:45no first-round pick
18:47this past year.
18:48They had two first-round picks
18:50in Atlanta in 2025.
18:52One's going to miss
18:53half the season
18:54with a suspension.
18:55The other is going to miss
18:56the entire season
18:56with an injury.
18:57Then go back to 2024.
19:00They signed Kirk Cousins.
19:01That never made any sense
19:03with the money they paid him
19:04off of the injury.
19:05Then, out of nowhere,
19:06they drafted Michael Penix Jr.
19:08in the first round.
19:09And this has proven
19:10to be chaotic
19:11and all over the map.
19:13And right now,
19:14Penix Jr. can't even
19:15get on the field.
19:15So, ridiculously problematic.
19:18And you can't rule anything out
19:20with Atlanta
19:21in terms of upside
19:22because the division
19:22is not any good.
19:24But, man,
19:25what a brutal start.
19:27And I mean a brutal start
19:30when you look at it
19:31for the Atlanta Falcons
19:32in the month of August.
19:33A complete and utter mess.
19:35The vibes are low.
19:37And I love Kevin Stefanski.
19:38I'm a huge fan.
19:39Love the higher two-time
19:40coach of the year.
19:41But this is as bad
19:43as it gets
19:44for a month of August
19:45for an NFL team.
19:46The only other real
19:47quarterback competition
19:48right now in the NFL
19:49is in Cleveland
19:50where new head coach
19:51Todd Munkin
19:52was impressed
19:53with Deshaun Watson
19:54who started
19:55against the Bears.
19:56How did you think
19:57Deshaun Watson
19:58did in his half of the game?
19:59Oh, it was awesome.
20:00I mean,
20:01it was so cool
20:02to watch him play.
20:03I mean,
20:04I get all of the
20:08frustration
20:10by fans himself.
20:13But for him
20:14to come back
20:15and work like he did
20:17is an unbelievable
20:19credit to him.
20:20And then to go out there,
20:21he was having fun today.
20:22And that is so cool.
20:24And I thought he really
20:25functioned at a high level.
20:27Certainly,
20:27we don't want to be
20:28taking timeouts.
20:30We sure as heck
20:31can't take delay games.
20:33Okay?
20:33But it was fun
20:35watching him play.
20:37So,
20:38if you listen to
20:39Todd Munkin
20:40right there,
20:41it is pretty
20:42crystal clear
20:44that Deshaun Watson
20:45is going to be
20:46the starting quarterback
20:47for the Cleveland Browns.
20:48It's over.
20:49And I am on record
20:51saying that
20:52Shador Sanders
20:53should be the guy
20:53and I stand by that take.
20:56Forget about it.
20:57And Deshaun Watson
20:58for the sake of fairness
20:59was good.
21:00I didn't think
21:01he was out of this world.
21:02I didn't think
21:02he was perfect.
21:03But that soundbite
21:05tells you
21:06that Todd Munkin
21:07is not acting alone.
21:09Todd Munkin
21:09was hired
21:10as a last candidate
21:11standing
21:12because
21:13it's not a good job
21:15when you're looking
21:15at the Cleveland Browns.
21:16Also,
21:17you have an owner
21:18who's paid Deshaun Watson
21:19a lot of money
21:20for nothing.
21:20A general manager
21:22named Andrew Berry
21:22who made the trade
21:23and obviously
21:25has nothing to show for it.
21:27Shador Sanders
21:27who threw a bad interception
21:29in the preseason
21:31over the weekend
21:31is not going to be the guy.
21:33Sanders will start
21:34according to Munkin
21:35this week
21:36and then
21:37I'm telling you
21:38by next Tuesday
21:39on Shine Time
21:40we are going to
21:41have Todd Munkin
21:42declared Deshaun Watson
21:43as a starting quarterback.
21:45The fix is in.
21:46They've paid him
21:47all this money
21:47they're trying
21:49to save face.
21:50Look,
21:51it's where hope
21:51goes to die.
21:52If Deshaun Watson
21:53is the answer
21:54I'd love to know
21:55the question.
21:55I do think
21:57for Cleveland
21:58watching Casey
21:59Concepcioni
21:59you know
22:00I was obsessed
22:00with him
22:00in the draft process
22:01that's inspiring
22:03watching Boston play
22:04it's absolutely amazing.
22:06I thought that
22:07Cleveland cleaned up
22:08in the draft
22:08Fannin
22:09young tight end
22:10last year was fantastic
22:11I think he'll be
22:12even better
22:12his second year
22:13there are positives
22:15but to listen
22:17to Todd Munkin
22:18wax poetic
22:19and rave
22:20about Watson
22:21in that kind of fashion
22:22that's not about
22:24the game.
22:24Todd Munkin
22:25I have way too much
22:26respect for him.
22:27Baltimore is the
22:27offensive coordinator
22:28in Georgia
22:29and he's been a lifer
22:30a phenomenal football guy.
22:32There is no way
22:33Todd Munkin
22:34is making those comments
22:36on Deshaun Watson
22:38from the weekend.
22:39That's an act
22:40from above
22:41from Jimmy Haslam
22:42from Andrew Berry.
22:44That's toeing
22:45the company line.
22:46There's no way
22:47this is even
22:48and that soundbite
22:49tells you everything
22:50you need to know.
22:51This is not even
22:52a real quarterback
22:53competition.
22:54It was over
22:54before it started.
22:56Financially
22:57they want
22:57Deshaun Watson
22:58to play.
22:59That's why
23:00Todd Munkin
23:01was as upbeat
23:02as he was
23:02because he doesn't
23:04have a choice
23:04in the matter.
23:06Coming up next
23:06Paul Feinbaum
23:07advises Jada Daniels
23:09to never waste
23:09another second
23:10in Baton Rouge, Louisiana
23:11because LSU fans
23:12are done with him.
23:13Could this PR disaster
23:14get any worse
23:15when the sundown shines?
23:17Next.
23:27PJ is in five
23:28and that was
23:31a situation
23:32that was promised
23:33to him in recruiting here
23:35for him to sign here
23:36and I've done
23:38a lot of research
23:38on that
23:39with the family
23:40and the representatives
23:40and the people
23:41and so really
23:43I didn't have a decision
23:44to make.
23:44It was promised
23:45to the kid.
23:46It wasn't done
23:46for whatever.
23:47I'm not going to get
23:47into that.
23:48I'm not going to judge
23:49something that I wasn't
23:50here of but
23:51when a kid's promised
23:52something to come
23:53to school
23:54you should wear it
23:55and so at that point
23:56I don't really think
23:57that's my decision.
23:59You know.
24:01Good for Lane Kiffin.
24:02The sun is not shining
24:04on Jaden Daniels
24:05right now.
24:06The Commander's QB
24:07and of course
24:08the Heisman Trophy
24:09winner at LSU
24:10getting all sorts
24:11of backlash
24:12over and over
24:13and over again
24:13after sending
24:14a cease and desist
24:15letter to his alma mater
24:17requesting inexplicably
24:20that they stop
24:21using his name
24:22image and likeness
24:23after Lane Kiffin
24:25and LSU
24:25allowed current
24:26Tigers quarterback
24:27T.J. Pickett
24:28to wear number five.
24:30The number that
24:31Jaden Daniels wore
24:32at Baton Rouge.
24:33Let me tell you
24:34something.
24:35Jaden Daniels
24:36officially is the
24:37dumbest person in sports.
24:38Jaden Daniels
24:40sending this letter
24:41having his people
24:42send this letter.
24:43If I'm a
24:43Commander's fan
24:44I'm livid.
24:46This is what he's
24:47concerned about
24:48getting ready
24:48for an NFL season
24:49and why
24:51would you ruin
24:53your great name
24:54at LSU?
24:56Why would you
24:57do this?
24:58And let me tell you
24:59something.
24:59First of all
25:00if I was a
25:01commissioner of the
25:02Worlds for college
25:04football.
25:05No uniform number
25:06would ever be retired.
25:08Ever.
25:09Because we're talking
25:10about hundreds of years
25:11of college football.
25:12You need more numbers.
25:13So that's first
25:15and foremost.
25:16Second of all
25:17Jaden you won
25:19the Heisman Trophy.
25:20Great.
25:20You're not even
25:21the best LSU
25:23quarterback within
25:24the last 15 years.
25:25Have you ever heard
25:26of Joe Burrow?
25:27Joe Burrow
25:28and that LSU team
25:29that was the greatest
25:30offense in the history
25:31of college football.
25:33Cease and desist
25:34basically urinating
25:37on all of the fans
25:39all the alum
25:40the players
25:40the administration
25:41at LSU
25:42ruining your good name.
25:45Why would you do that
25:46if you're Jaden Daniels?
25:48Makes absolutely
25:49positively
25:50no sense
25:51in any way
25:52shape or form.
25:53This is
25:54taking a fan base
25:55that loves you
25:56and just
25:57trashing them.
25:58Makes
25:59it's as amateur
26:00hour as it gets.
26:02I think that
26:03when you look at it
26:04from a Jaden Daniels
26:05perspective
26:06this is one of the
26:07dumbest things
26:09I've ever seen
26:10an athlete do.
26:11And I give
26:12Lane Kiffin credit.
26:13Look
26:13he wasn't even
26:14the coach
26:15when this promise
26:16was given to Pickett
26:17that he was going
26:18to wear number five.
26:19He was at Ole Miss
26:20but he's going to
26:21honor the commitments
26:22honor what's
26:23the old regime
26:24promised DJ Pickett
26:26and that's fine.
26:27You see it all the time
26:29in college sports.
26:30You get
26:31you know
26:31you're recruited
26:32or someone's trying
26:32to transfer schools
26:33and I yell
26:34you dangle a uniform
26:35whatever it takes
26:36whatever the carrot is.
26:38Why Jaden Daniels
26:39at the end of the day
26:41would try and attack
26:42a fan base
26:43that loves him
26:44and cherishes him
26:45and respects him
26:46I have absolutely
26:47no idea.
26:48And if I'm a fan
26:49of the Washington
26:50Commanders here
26:51I'm livid.
26:52I'm absolutely livid.
26:53And look at this
26:54by the way.
26:55You know
26:56you are officially
26:57at the bottom
26:58of the barrel
26:59right
27:00when we are talking
27:01about the Mets
27:03making fun of you.
27:04Stopped at four
27:05out of respect
27:06for Jaden Daniels
27:08and all these
27:08baseball teams
27:09their social media
27:10teams were cooking
27:11especially the Mets
27:12over the weekend.
27:13You know
27:13stopped at four
27:14because you don't
27:14want to get sued
27:15and get a cease and desist
27:16for Jaden Daniels
27:17at five.
27:18Then there's the
27:19Commanders element
27:20of this right.
27:21If you're a
27:22Commanders fan
27:23you're saying
27:23why is my
27:24quarterback in year
27:25three after he was
27:25hurt last year
27:26and didn't make
27:26the playoffs
27:27he should be
27:28trying to get a
27:28rapport with
27:29Stephon Diggs
27:30and said he's
27:30worried about a
27:31uniform number
27:31at LSU.
27:32So he has ruined
27:34his reputation
27:35at LSU.
27:35He's dead
27:36to everyone
27:37at LSU.
27:38He's ruined
27:38his reputation
27:39in terms of not
27:40keeping the eye
27:40on the ball
27:41and on the prize
27:42at Washington.
27:44This is one
27:45of the dumbest
27:46most asinine
27:47most ridiculous
27:48calculations
27:49I have ever seen.
27:51As clueless
27:52and as atrocious
27:53and as poor
27:54and as ill-conceived.
27:56Everyone involved.
27:58His mom
27:59who serves
27:59as his pseudo-agent
28:01and you know
28:02he's leading
28:03the charge
28:04and all this
28:04and I love
28:05love
28:07relationships
28:08with sons
28:09and moms.
28:10I love my mom.
28:11Talk to her
28:11every single day.
28:12I love when
28:14athletes keep
28:14their parents
28:15involved in the circle.
28:17Listen,
28:17if my mom
28:18had an idea
28:19to suggest
28:19what to lead
28:20shine time with
28:21and it wasn't
28:22the right idea
28:22I'm not listening
28:23to my mother.
28:25Jaden Daniels
28:26should not be
28:27listening to his mom
28:28here on trying
28:29to just ruin
28:31everything in the
28:32goodwill and good name
28:33that he had
28:34at LSU.
28:35I mean this
28:35this is insane.
28:37Absolutely insane.
28:38And by the way
28:40there's no coming
28:40back from this.
28:42Like sometimes
28:42you could say
28:43oh you know
28:43time heals
28:44all will
28:45not from this
28:46not now
28:47not ever.
28:48He just destroyed
28:50everything that he had
28:51because by the way
28:52you know
28:53when you are part
28:55of a school
28:55and part of a program
28:56you're there
28:57and you want
28:58the future
28:59to be as good
29:00or better.
29:01So you want
29:02Pickett to take
29:03on the legacy
29:04of number five.
29:05You want him
29:06to be an unbelievable
29:07player.
29:07You want Lane Kiffin
29:09to succeed.
29:10This
29:11just tells
29:12every LSU fan
29:13Jaden Daniels
29:14doesn't care
29:14about LSU.
29:15He cares about
29:16himself.
29:17He's selfish.
29:18Selfish,
29:19clueless,
29:20punkish.
29:21This was as
29:21ill-conceived
29:22and grotesque
29:23doing something
29:24and a move
29:25and a stunt
29:26I've ever seen
29:27by an athlete.
29:28As dumb
29:29and as miscalculated
29:30as it gets.
29:31Bag it
29:32Jaden Daniels.
29:34Up next,
29:35California Dreaming.
29:36Ty Simpson
29:37balls out
29:38in his Rams debut.
29:39Dodgers weekend
29:40blunder may cost
29:41him home field
29:42advantage
29:42throughout the playoffs.
29:44And South Central
29:46legend Russell Westbrook
29:47calls it a career.
29:48So where does he rank?
29:50Stay locked
29:50on Shine Time.
29:53Time for some
29:54California Dreaming,
29:56baby.
29:56Sean McVay
29:57must have thought
29:58he was dreaming
29:58watching Ty Simpson
30:00sling it
30:01in his preseason debut.
30:03Give it up for yourself.
30:05Pick time.
30:06The game flipped
30:07on the defensive stop.
30:09X ends up being able
30:10to get the great punt return,
30:12great blocks,
30:13offense capitalizes.
30:15Ty Simpson
30:15get a breakdown, man.
30:20Nice to work tomorrow, man.
30:22Let's go get the guys
30:23here next week.
30:24Here we go.
30:24Hey, Rams on me,
30:25Rams on three.
30:25One, two, three.
30:26Rams.
30:28Look,
30:28you never want
30:29to overreact
30:30to a preseason game.
30:32But I want you
30:34to look at the
30:35stat page
30:36for Ty Simpson.
30:37And if you watched him
30:39play,
30:39and I know that you did,
30:40it felt like
30:42he knew what he was doing.
30:4321 to 25,
30:45190 yards,
30:46couple of touchdowns,
30:48no interceptions.
30:49And listen,
30:50I'm not going to sit here
30:51and tell you
30:52he was playing
30:53against anyone
30:54who mattered.
30:55What I am going to tell you
30:56is for Ty Simpson,
30:57who was a
30:59controversial pick
31:00high in the first round.
31:01You know,
31:02I thought they could have
31:03drafted an offensive weapon,
31:04should have drafted
31:05an offensive weapon.
31:06Lemon would have made
31:07a lot of sense.
31:07Sadiq would have made
31:08a lot of sense.
31:09You know,
31:09they go with,
31:10obviously,
31:11Simpson,
31:11their quarterback
31:12of the future.
31:13Talk to Sean McVay
31:14about it on my
31:15Sirius XM radio show.
31:16He explained it.
31:17I get it.
31:18I still don't agree with it.
31:20But this is their
31:21future quarterback.
31:23And also,
31:23you want him to be able
31:25to be the backup quarterback
31:26for Matthew Stafford
31:27this season,
31:28not since invented.
31:29So,
31:30watching Ty Simpson
31:32do his thing
31:33was a big deal.
31:35Because you're looking
31:36for reasons
31:36to be dreaming
31:37if you're a Rams fan
31:38that you're going to see
31:40a Stafford
31:41to Simpson progression
31:42whenever Matthew
31:43calls it a career,
31:44which he's got
31:45a lot of gas
31:46left in the tank.
31:47And you want to start
31:48California dreaming
31:49about Aaron Donald
31:51as well.
31:52And how about the fact
31:53that Aaron Donald
31:54over the weekend
31:55had his second workouts
31:57with the Rams?
32:00This, to me,
32:01is noteworthy
32:03when you look at it
32:04from an L.A. perspective
32:05because it means
32:06Aaron Donald
32:07wanted to test himself
32:08or he's on the verge
32:11of signing a contract.
32:12California Post,
32:13back page,
32:13try,
32:14try again.
32:16Little Seinfeld
32:17play right there.
32:18That's pretty good.
32:19I absolutely live
32:21for that back page
32:22and I live for seeing
32:23my guy Aaron Donald
32:24on the football field.
32:26So,
32:26if you're a fan
32:27of the L.A. Rams,
32:28you're a California
32:29dreaming about
32:29another parade,
32:31you're a California
32:31dreaming about
32:32Ty Simpson being the guy
32:34whatever Matthew Stafford
32:35calls it a legendary,
32:37brilliant,
32:37Hall of Fame,
32:38first ballot career,
32:39this could be
32:40a season to remember
32:43with the L.A. Super Bowl
32:45and the Rams winning it all
32:47last time you had
32:48a Super Bowl
32:48in Los Angeles.
32:50So,
32:50let me tell you something.
32:51If I'm a Rams fan,
32:52this was exactly
32:53what you needed
32:54after that draft pick
32:56and how they made it
32:57and the shock
32:58and the awe
32:59and just how wild
33:00it was
33:01beats the alternative
33:02here of not looking good
33:05during a preseason game.
33:07So,
33:08definitely
33:08a great sign
33:10for Ty Simpson
33:11and L.A.
33:13Meanwhile,
33:14the Dodgers
33:15lost three or four
33:15to the Brewers
33:16over the weekend
33:17in Los Angeles,
33:18resulting in losing
33:19the season series
33:21to Milwaukee.
33:22Manager Dave Roberts
33:23knows that could
33:24loom large
33:25down the line.
33:30Because it could matter,
33:32but we didn't,
33:33so now we've got
33:34to move forward,
33:35but I hope it doesn't
33:38come back to buy this.
33:40Listen,
33:41the Dodgers
33:42are a mess right now.
33:43I want you to take
33:43a look at this
33:45in terms of the nuggets
33:46of futility here
33:47for Los Angeles.
33:48They lose three out of four
33:50to Milwaukee
33:51and this team
33:52is not playing
33:53good baseball
33:53and of course,
33:54the irony,
33:55school bowl lost
33:56and, you know,
33:57it could have been
33:57the Brewers
33:58that should have
33:58traded for them
33:59and look at this,
34:00five and 11
34:01in their last 16.
34:02That includes
34:02getting swept by Boston,
34:04swept by the Cubbies,
34:05losing a series
34:05to Milwaukee,
34:06losing a series
34:07to Arizona.
34:08They have been
34:10a bad baseball team
34:12since July 1st.
34:14Kyle Tucker,
34:17atrocious on offense
34:18against Milwaukee.
34:20The L.A. fans
34:21booed him.
34:23Good for them.
34:24He's been brutal.
34:25Lost another fly ball.
34:26His defense,
34:27we go back to
34:28how he fouled up
34:29a game in Chicago,
34:31has been atrocious.
34:32Kyle Tucker
34:33has been awful.
34:34Edwin Diaz,
34:35I mean,
34:35he is just imploding
34:37Dave Roberts,
34:37who's always so great
34:39and so smooth
34:39talking to the press.
34:40He's had to kind of
34:42backtrack a couple times
34:43on Edwin Diaz
34:44and he snapped at the press
34:45a couple of times.
34:47This has been a disaster
34:48and it matters here
34:49because look at the standings
34:51in the National League.
34:52The Brewers,
34:53who I don't believe
34:54will win in the playoffs,
34:56if the season ended today,
34:57the Brewers are going to be
34:58the team that gets home field.
35:00The Brewers would have
35:01the one seat.
35:02Then you take a look at it
35:04and you see the Atlanta Braves
35:05just a couple of games back.
35:08Then the Dodgers right now,
35:10they would have to play
35:11in the first round
35:11against the Padres
35:13who are heating up.
35:14And I think these six teams
35:16will make the playoffs,
35:17the top six teams
35:17that you see in the
35:18National League
35:20with the Brewers
35:20and the Braves
35:21and the Dodgers
35:22and the Cubs
35:22and the Phillies
35:24and the Padres.
35:24And if you have the Dodgers
35:26and the Padres
35:27meeting
35:28in the first round
35:30of the playoffs
35:30in the wildcard round,
35:31wouldn't that be something
35:33if the Padres
35:34with their new pitchers
35:35at the top of that rotation,
35:36if they were the team
35:37little brother
35:38against big brother
35:39that's dethroned the champs
35:41and Shohei Otani
35:42and knocked them out
35:43of the postseason?
35:44Listen,
35:45it's possible here.
35:46Look,
35:47I'll pick the Dodgers
35:48because I still think
35:50they're the best team
35:51in the National League
35:52and I still think
35:53they'll find their footing
35:54down the stretch
35:56of the season
35:56and win another World Series
35:58and, you know,
35:59the Braves,
35:59I give them a ton of credit.
36:01They have been
36:01absolutely remarkable
36:02and, you know,
36:03I don't really think
36:04the Brewers are going to be
36:06a team that you trust
36:07in October.
36:08Still like the Phillies.
36:09I still love the Cubs
36:11and I think the Cubs
36:12can actually catch Milwaukee.
36:13Felt more confident
36:14about that
36:14before the Brewers
36:16took care of business
36:16against Los Angeles
36:18this past week.
36:19But the Dodgers
36:21Blues are
36:23legit.
36:24Now,
36:24we're still California
36:25dreaming here
36:26about a World Series
36:26championship
36:27for the Dodgers.
36:28They remain my pick.
36:30That is my prediction.
36:31I still think
36:32their pitching
36:33their upside
36:34is too much.
36:35But Dave Roberts
36:37was pissed
36:37after the game yesterday.
36:39He was,
36:40he wanted to win.
36:41He did not want
36:42to lose this season series,
36:43lose the series
36:44to Milwaukee.
36:45This has been
36:46a bad baseball team
36:47for, you know,
36:48a while now.
36:49For six weeks
36:50of just Dodger Blues.
36:51It has not been pretty.
36:53And Dave Roberts
36:54is trying to recapture
36:56the energy,
36:56the focus,
36:57the magic
36:58while they get healthy
36:59simultaneously.
37:00I mean,
37:01I still think
37:02they're the best team
37:02in terms of winning
37:03the World Series.
37:04Vegas has them
37:05installed as the frontrunner.
37:07But if they don't get
37:08their heads
37:08out of their derrieres,
37:09they're going to be
37:09lopped off
37:10in the wildcard round.
37:11And if they end up
37:12losing to the Padres,
37:15not good.
37:16Tucker's been a disaster.
37:17Diaz has been a disaster.
37:19His team needs to start
37:20playing some winning baseball.
37:21It's been a minute now.
37:23This is also why
37:24I give the Dodgers credit
37:25for making that
37:25Scoobble deal.
37:26Because who cares
37:27that we were ahead
37:28of the curve on this.
37:29What the haters say,
37:30what the critics say,
37:31what the media elite,
37:32what they have to say.
37:33The Dodgers needed
37:33to make this trade
37:34for Scoobble
37:35because frankly,
37:36they're not very good
37:37or very consistent
37:38right about now.
37:40So this was just
37:41an embarrassing weekend
37:43for Los Angeles.
37:44To lose this series,
37:45to lose to the team
37:46that should have traded
37:47for Scoobble
37:47and had no business not.
37:50Just a joke.
37:51Absolute jokes.
37:52Don't believe
37:52in the upside of this team.
37:54Still California
37:54dreaming about a championship.
37:56But what a mess.
37:58Last but not least,
37:59one of L.A.'s favorite sons
38:00announced his retirement
38:01from the NBA.
38:04Before he was a walking headline,
38:06he was just a kid
38:08from inner city L.A.
38:10who could jump higher
38:11than anybody had a right to.
38:15Somewhere between the dunks
38:16and the draft classes,
38:18he became something else.
38:20Not just a player,
38:22a personality.
38:24A meme before we even called it.
38:27A husband,
38:28a father,
38:30a guy in a kilt at the Met.
38:32Damned anybody to say something.
38:36Man,
38:37I have the chills watching that.
38:39Russell Westbrook
38:41called it a career.
38:4218 glorious seasons
38:44in the NBA.
38:45Russell Westbrook,
38:47the most disrespected player
38:49in the NBA
38:50in the last 25 years.
38:51Russell Westbrook is a superstar, an MVP, an Olympic champion.
38:58You take a look at Mr. Triple Double, this guy was a legend.
39:04Phenomenal on offense.
39:06You see where he ranks historically in steals.
39:09Great on defense.
39:10Part of the NBA 75th anniversary team.
39:14Led the league in scoring.
39:16Led the league in assists.
39:18And I will always and forever believe, right,
39:20and this obviously changed history.
39:23You know, Russell Westbrook, if they would have held on with Kevin Durant in OKC
39:27and they would have beat the Warriors in 2016 when they were up, obviously,
39:3231 in the Western Conference Finals, and Klay Thompson went nuts in that game six
39:36and the Warriors won, that whole series changed basketball history.
39:41I will always and forever believe that that team that year would have knocked off
39:45Cleveland and LeBron James.
39:48And Oklahoma City, with Russ and KD, with Billy Donovan, would have won a championship
39:53in 2016 and beat the Cleveland Cavaliers.
39:56And again, they didn't.
39:58KD left.
39:59He joined the Warriors.
40:00Cleveland wins a championship with LeBron.
40:02Literally, history was changed, in my opinion, based upon the results.
40:07And also changed in terms of how you view Russell Westbrook.
40:11Look, there were moments where he tried to do too much in the playoffs and he would turn
40:16it over on occasion.
40:17I know that would drive people crazy.
40:19But his effort was always the best.
40:21The energy was always the best.
40:23And then when he had to leave Oklahoma City, some bad fits.
40:27I mean, that Laker fit was always bad.
40:30The Houston fit never really made any sense.
40:32But I just loved and appreciated his work ethic, how team-oriented he was, how he got his teammates
40:39involved.
40:40Russell Westbrook, to me, was the epitome of hard work and class and always played 100
40:46miles per hour, which I loved and respected and cherished.
40:50One of my all-time favorite basketball players and just disrespected in the court of public
40:56opinion, a unique career, a special career, a sensational career.
41:02Russell Westbrook, congratulations.
41:05We salute you on an unbelievable run in the NBA.
41:09That right there is the show.
41:10If you missed any portion of the show, just do what I do.
