Reform UK unveils mandatory 20-hour work plan for benefits claimants
Transcript
00:00Let me speak very plainly. If people who are capable of work refuse, then they'll get nothing.
00:07That's fair. But we must also ensure that people who can work are incentivized to do so.
00:16There are more than 330,000 adults on universal credit capable of work,
00:24and who are supposed to be out there looking for it, but who have reportedly been doing so for more
00:31than 12 months.
00:32This can't keep going on. We all know that.
00:37If taxpayers must contribute, so must those who are able to work also play their part.
00:48I'm therefore announcing that a reformed government will introduce a welfare-to-work scheme
00:54that will require long-term benefits claimants who are fit to work
00:58to provide 20 hours a week of work for their community, organized by their local council.
01:06They'll work to clean up high streets and parks, to beautify neglected places,
01:10to carry out minor repairs, to staff libraries and community centers,
01:15to perform many other tasks from the list that we've published today.
01:19We'll also embrace local charities and community groups, and ask them to help us and take part.
01:25If claimants refuse to participate or fail to show up, they'll face penalties.
