00:00Welcome back.
00:01On Sunday, Brazilian President Luiz Ináxulo Lula Silva officially launched his re-election
00:06campaign with a rally at the Uno de Mayo Stadium historically known as Vila Euclides in São
00:11Fernando do Campo.
00:12From the event, our correspondent Brian Amir with the details.
00:18Lula da Silva has just finished giving one of the greatest speeches of his career here
00:24in Vila Euclides Stadium, a stadium which was the location of several massive assemblies
00:32during the metallurgical strikes of 1979 and 1980, which are now remembered as one of the
00:38final nails in the coffin that brought down the U.S.-backed military dictatorship.
00:44Lula spoke of those days at the beginning of his speech.
00:47He talked about a lot of the accomplishments that have taken place since the PT first took
00:52power in 2002.
00:54For example, in 2002, only 5 million Brazilians had university degrees.
01:00Today, that number has risen to 25 million, thanks in part to the class-based affirmative
01:06action program that was implemented by the Workers' Party in 2010.
01:11Lula ended his speech talking about his plans for the next four years.
01:15He talked about his hopes of passing a constitutional amendment to create a
01:22security ministry so they can start focusing on a national level and taking down organized crime
01:29kingpins and also giving opportunities to poor youth so that they don't have to enter
01:35a life of crime in the first place.
01:37It ended with the President, his Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and First Lady Janja on a catwalk
01:45showered in confetti with thousands of labor union members and social movement members
01:51applauding the President of Brazil on this historic occasion, 47 years after his last
01:57union assembly speech here at Villa Euclides Stadium in San Bernardo do Campo.
02:03I've got to say to that.
02:04I hope it was fantastic.
