00:00Health workers in eastern Congo say a strike over unpaid wages is disrupting ephos to contain the country's fast-moving
00:08Ebola outbreak.
00:09At the Nizi Treatment Center in Ituri province, contract tracers and community health workers say they are finning out across
00:16neighborhoods each day 25 people who may have been exposed.
00:21The challenge we are facing with tracing right now is that service providers haven't been paid yet.
00:30We are also facing challenges related to limited mobility on our field staff.
00:36One health worker said staff have not been paid in more than three months.
00:41Another said surveillance teams are receiving $60 to $70 a day and are scoring the pressure on the response system.
00:49Health workers report that progress has now been made in communities with patients showing up on their own.
00:56At first it wasn't easy, but now I don't think there's anyone who is sick hiding in the community to
01:02avoid coming in for treatment.
01:04But there is still a challenge, if I may bring it up here.
01:08As you can see, we have our Ebola treatment center here at the hospital, which has only 80 beds.
01:13The outbreak caused by the rare Bundabugyo Ebola virus is unfolding under extremely difficult conditions.
01:21There is no approved vaccine or treatment for this strain, although trials are underway.
01:27Health officials say strikes, insecurity, community mistrust and misinformation are all hampering the response.
01:36Meanwhile, in the communities, effective response is now beginning to bear fruits.
01:41Since we started raising awareness, we've been delighted because people are beginning to follow hand-washing guidelines and avoid handling
01:49the body.
01:51If someone dies at home, people close the door and wait for the response team to handle the burial.
01:59Government data published overnight introduced the show the outbreak has now reached 4,381 confirmed cases with 2,011 deaths.
02:09Authorities say sequencing indicates the outbreak began in February, months before it was officially declared on May 15.
