Powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake strikes Indonesia, killing at least 40

A second 6.9-magnitude quake later hit Pematangsiantar on the western island of Sumatra, at a depth of around 183 km. The first quake hit at a depth of around 10 km.

00:02A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake has killed at least 40 people in eastern Indonesia after
00:09striking north of Flores Island early on Saturday. The quake sparked panic as residents fled into
00:15the streets as many buildings crumbled. A tsunami warning was declared but later lifted after
00:21Indonesia's geological agency detected no significant sea level rises threatening coastal
00:27communities. Authorities said two people were seriously injured, 11 suffered minor injuries
00:33and around 2,000 people evacuated on their own. The tremors were felt across several areas of
00:40East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara and South Sulawesi. A second quake of magnitude 6.9 struck
00:48a different part of Indonesia later in the day with the epicenter near the island of western
00:53Sumatra. No tsunami warning was issued, so authorities have begun searching for survivors buried under
01:00the rubble following one of the country's strongest earthquakes in recent memory.
