00:01The Met Office have now issued an extreme heat warning, an amber warning for this coming
00:05Thursday for eastern parts of England.
00:08The reason being that we are going to see temperatures in excess of 37 Celsius and despite
00:14how this summer has gone so far, that's still an extreme temperature for the UK.
00:19Those temperatures are building day by day.
00:21Tuesday is a hot day for many.
00:23Now, for the north of Scotland, we've got thicker clouds and some outbreaks of really
00:26quite light and patchy rain.
00:27Otherwise, it's dry with sunny spells across the vast majority of the UK.
00:31With winds coming in from the southeast, it's always going to be a little cooler across eastern
00:36parts of England.
00:37Temperatures around the coast limited to the low 20s.
00:41Further inland, the heat shifts into the west of England, Wales, where temperatures from
00:46Merseyside through parts of east Wales into the west country could reach 29 or 30 Celsius,
00:52so a little hotter compared with Monday.
00:55Across Scotland and Northern Ireland, it's also warmer.
00:58Temperatures reaching the low to possibly the mid-20s given any sunny spells.
01:03It does stay dry with clear spells for the vast majority overnight.
01:07There will be some patchy cloud here and there.
01:09The cloud thickens though for western Scotland with some heavy showers moving in by dawn.
01:14Those showers may affect the far north-west of Northern Ireland as well.
01:18But elsewhere, it's clear.
01:20Despite the clear skies, it's going to be a warmer night compared with the previous night.
01:26Temperatures in many places staying in the mid to high teens.
01:30Even for Scotland and Northern Ireland, some places will see temperatures holding up in the
01:33teens.
01:34So, we've already got off to a head start on Wednesday with temperatures rapidly rising
01:40through the morning across a large part of the United Kingdom where we've got strong spells
01:44of sunshine.
01:45Showers moving through northern parts of Scotland.
01:47They do ease off for a time into the afternoon.
01:50And although there will be some patchy cloud cover for Scotland and Northern Ireland, always
01:55thickest across western Scotland, for many parts of the UK, it's another dry, it's another
02:00sunny day.
02:01And temperatures up several degrees compared with Tuesdays, so they really are jumping up
02:06day by day.
02:07We're talking about peak temperatures being 33, 34 Celsius widely for the Midlands, parts
02:13of Wales.
02:14Up to 35 Celsius is possible.
02:16Again, a little cooler around eastern parts of England, but that's going to change into
02:22Thursday.
02:23Before I get on to that, you might be interested to know more about the solar eclipse which
02:28is happening on Wednesday night, peaking around about 7pm or shortly after, depending on where
02:34you are in the UK.
02:35And this is the cloud forecast for that time.
02:37So, as you can see, excellent chance for the vast majority of England and Wales where skies
02:43are expected to remain clear.
02:44It is unfortunately cloudier for Scotland and Northern Ireland, although hopefully that
02:49cloud thinning and breaking at times for us in Northern Ireland, Southern and Eastern
02:52Scotland.
02:53It's most likely to be thick cloud though with some heavy showers for the north and northwest
02:58of Scotland.
02:59So lower chances here.
03:02But yeah, for many places, it is looking like excellent viewing conditions.
03:06Just make sure you view it safely with approved eyeglasses that you can get in, well, they
03:13are running out of supplies, but you can get on some websites or make your own pinhole camera,
03:19for example.
03:20Thursday is the peak of the heat.
03:22You can see widespread sunshine once again across the vast majority of England and Wales.
03:26A bit more cloud comes into the far west.
03:29And for Scotland and Northern Ireland, a much cloudier day with outbreaks of rain coming
03:33into the northwest of Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland later on, some heavy bursts.
03:38But the heat is going to shift because we've lost that easterly breeze.
03:41The heat's shifting east across England and temperatures jumping up once again, widely the mid-30s here.
03:49And in some places, 37 to perhaps 38 Celsius.
03:54Now, if 37 Celsius is recorded, it will only be the ninth day on record that 37 Celsius or
04:01above has been recorded in the UK.
04:03And if it's recorded on Thursday, it will be the third day this year.
04:06So, three out of those nine days this year, it's still an unusual temperature.
04:11It's still likely to cause issues with infrastructure as well as people's health.
04:17Hence, the amber extreme heat warning.
04:20Now, Friday is looking like a less hot day.
04:22So, Thursday, certainly the peak of the heat and those high temperatures expected to occur
04:28through the West Midlands, the East Midlands, I should say, and other eastern parts of England.
