00:00MySpace says it's coming back, and it wants to be your escape from the apps that keep you doomscrolling.
00:05Here's what's happening.
00:06Back in 2008, MySpace was the biggest social network on the planet,
00:10you know, before Facebook buried it.
00:12Its owner, since 2011, brothers Tim and Chris Vanderhoek,
00:15teased in a new documentary that they're relaunching it with no date announced yet.
00:19And they're not promising it'll work.
00:21They say in the documentary that if this one flops, they'll try again,
00:24same as when they tried to relaunch in 2013, which lost about $150 million.
00:28Their pitch this time?
00:30No algorithm chasing your attention, just a feed you actually get to control.
00:34They want it to feel nothing like the apps that are built to keep you scrolling.
00:37But Forrester analyst Kate Winnick told CNBC the catch.
00:41People who want to spend less time scrolling aren't going to spend more time online to get there.
00:46And the people that do love their apps?
00:48They're not going anywhere.
00:49Look at TikTok.
00:50In January 2025, with a nationwide TikTok ban days away,
00:54NBC reported Red Note, a Chinese video app most Americans had never heard of,
00:58welcomed more than 700,000 new users in two days.
01:02Then TikTok actually went dark.
01:04170 million US users lost access for only a few hours.
01:08The moment it came back, so did they.
01:10Red Note lost 54% of its US daily users the day the TikTok ban paused.
01:15So maybe the real question isn't whether people are ready to log off of their favorite apps,
01:19it's whether Myspace can get anyone's attention to do so.
01:22Would you notice if Myspace showed up in your feed right now?
01:25Or is your attention already spoken for?
