00:00We've seen MERS, we've seen SARS in recent years, and there was swine flu, avian flu,
00:06and none of them really touched the UK in a significant way. So we were very complacent
00:12about this. We saw it beginning to happen in Europe. We thought, no, it's not going
00:16to come to these shores. We didn't take it seriously enough. People carried on living
00:21normally. And then suddenly we had this upsurge in cases. We had many deaths. We've now had
00:27probably about 70,000 excess deaths. And people realised that it was very serious. But already
00:35people are talking about getting back to normal. And we haven't really got through the first
00:40wave, let alone worrying about the second wave, which is inevitable now. We're beginning to
00:46see signs of that already. And people have lost the fear that they had originally. We
00:51talked, didn't we, about media coverage of people being nursed face down in intensive
00:56care. And people were frightened to touch their face with their hands. We had messages from
01:02people saying, Piers, you touched your face with your hands. You know, people were that
01:06focused on the detail. All that detail has been forgotten.
