00:00Well, there are clear signs already that the Andy Burnham honeymoon period has come crashing,
00:06screeching to an end. Pretty worrying for Labour. In a national poll, that since Burnham became
00:13the Prime Minister, you've already seen reform overtake Labour to regain the top spot as the
00:20most popular party in the country. Now, just to give some context, when you look at a former
00:27period of Labour domination, so if we look at the 90s going into the early 2000s, you know,
00:33Labour absolutely dominated the national polls for years and years and years. Sustained periods.
00:41So that is certainly what you're not seeing under Labour now and the party whose membership has
00:48sunk catastrophically under the previous leader, Keir Starmer. Burnham under immediate pressure
00:56because under his tenure, thousands more people have already been allowed to cross illegally
01:00from France to England. And this was the Labour government being asked about this.
01:07Smash the gangs and try and get... How many gangs have you smashed?
01:10Well, we've stopped tens of thousands of attempted crossings. Arrests of members of these gangs have
01:17gone up and we've seen... How many have been arrested then? Let's do that.
01:21Well, Nick, let's deal with the end result of the problem.
01:25Minister, you just said you are smashing the gangs. How many people have been arrested?
01:29Well, Nick, there have been a number of arrests, but I'll tell you the proof is in the pudding.
01:32What's the number? 10? 20? 1,000?
01:34Nick, Nick, hold on. I don't have that number for you, but I have another number for you.
01:36Well, you're not smashing the gangs. It's all just trading.
01:37But Nick, I have a number, a more important number for you, which is that this July is the
01:41lowest number of boat crossings for six years. We've seen around a 40% reduction in boat crossings
01:45this year compared to last year. The reason... Yeah, and we've got a lot more to do, but
01:50there is no doubt at all, as the Prime Minister has said on this issue, that we are heading
01:53in the right direction. We are continuing to work at pace to make sure that...
01:57How can you be heading in the right direction? 173 people nearly burnt to death on the channel.
02:01How's that heading in the right direction? Well, Nick, because fewer people are attempting
02:03to cross the channel, because we are taking action both here at home with huge reforms
02:09of the asylum system. But we don't know how many traffickers have been arrested?

03:44screen now. Now, remarkably, you did also have a Labour MP and minister point out that recently,
03:51there was a case where people were returned to France. Why this isn't happening with every single
04:01illegal crossing, I don't know. What we do know is that in terms of the Labour government's one in,
04:08one out deal, as usual, we've been completely stitched up here. If you look at this deal with the French,
04:13only 4% of those arriving are sent back. And by the way, we actually receive more people through
04:22this scheme than are returned to France. So as usual, a completely rotten deal cooked up. In terms
04:31of what should actually be done? Well, try listening to the man who actually stopped the boats at former
04:36Aussie Prime Minister Tony Abbott. There are two elements that are absolutely essential. The first
04:43is being prepared to send boats back. If needs be, send people back at unsinkable life rafts, which is
04:51what my government did. The second is disrupting these people gangs on land. And largely with the
05:00cooperation of the Indonesians, that's what we did. And the issue for the British government is how much
05:06cooperation will they get from the French. But it has to happen. By hook or by crook, it just has
05:12to
05:12happen. Because what's happening across the English Channel now is a peaceful invasion.
05:17And of course, we saw those shocking scenes out of that Spanish territory too.
05:22And this is where Europe collectively has been incredibly weak. If you lose control of your borders,
05:30in the end, you lose your sovereignty. And Europe has now tolerated what amounts to a peaceful invasion
05:36for over a decade. And indeed, when it comes to reforms plan, Zia Youssef, in terms of if the French
05:43say no, this is his response and what should be done. What if Macron says, mais non? What happens then?
05:51OK, so as I said in the press conference, we envisage two scenarios. One in which the French
05:56cooperate, much easier, better, preferable. But we absolutely in the document lay out a scenario in
06:01which they do not cooperate, do not cooperate. And make no mistake, if they do not cooperate and
06:06they're not happy about it, our Royal Marines will land those illegal migrants back on the very shore
06:13which they left that morning as part of a humanitarian mission. OK, that's what we will do.
06:17That would be seen as an act of war.
06:18No, it is completely legal. In fact, you have a legal obligation under every treaty that is
06:24relevant to be so allows or any of the other UN treaties that govern the sea. If you come
06:29across a vessel in distress, you are legally obliged. It's not even an option to pick those
06:34people up, to rescue them, which is what this is, and to take them to safety. That is exactly
06:38what we would do. Now, also, we've seen in terms of the Labour government, Andy Burnham's government,
06:44Ed Miliband, believe it or not, is the Foreign Secretary. And after those ridiculous comments made
06:50by David Lammy, very embarrassing for the country, similar sort of nonsense from Miliband over the years.
06:58And yeah, it's a little bit awkward, isn't it?
07:04Mr. Miliband, do you still think the president is an idiot, a racist and a misogynist? Sir,
07:12do you still hold a dim view of the president and does it hamper your business? We're looking
07:16forward to our meeting. Now, recently, you did also see reforms Robert Jenrick speaking to the
07:34administration there with J.D. Vance, the U.S. Vice President. But in terms of national sentiment,
07:42in terms of where the public are right now, the Burnham bounce, yes, it's real, but it may have
07:50already peaked because we have now seen a national poll already with reform overtaking Labour. And you
07:57can see there, Dr. Patrick English of YouGov speaking to The Telegraph, saying that there has
08:03been a positive response from the public to Labour's removal of Keir Starmer and replacement with Andy
08:09Burnham. But though Burnham leads favourability ratings, he is not hugely popular. And the verdict
08:16there that I don't think we should expect a massive surge in Labour support. Now, this is remarkable,
08:21I think, that so quickly after Burnham became leader, you've already seen reform overtake Labour.
08:29And in another pollster there, you can see with opinion, yes, Labour do lead there, but Labour steady
08:35with reform picking up to there as well. So that's potentially an early warning sign there that the
08:42Burnham bounce may already be over that the honeymoon period is coming to a pretty quick end. Do let me
