Senator Bernie Sanders is throwing his full support behind Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan in the high-stakes Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate, set for August 11, 2026. Sanders has rallied the progressive wing of the Democratic Party behind Flanagan as she takes on more centrist U.S. Representative Angie Craig. The race is drawing major attention as Flanagan campaigns on a progressive platform closely aligned with Sanders, including Medicare for All, a ban on medical prior authorizations, and raising the minimum wage to at least $17 an hour. Sanders also blasted billionaire-backed super PAC spending against Flanagan during their July 20 Minneapolis rally, declaring that she has “the guts to stand up for working people.”

00:00Donald Trump is the president of the United States.
00:03That's pretty bad.
00:05Why are we winning elections?
00:06And I think the answer is obvious.
00:09People are sick and tired of status quo politics
00:13and establishment politics and establishment policies.
00:18Hello, Minnesota!
00:20I want to say a few words about the election coming up this Tuesday.
00:26And let me start off with some very bad news.
00:30Donald Trump is the president of the United States.
00:34That's pretty bad.
00:35I think, as all of you know, he is an authoritarian,
00:39doesn't believe in the Constitution or the rule of law.
00:43He's a kleptocrat.
00:45He's made billions of dollars in wealth for his family since he's been president.
00:50He is a narcissist.
00:52This guy had his way.
00:54I suspect he'd worn half the buildings in America named after him.
00:58He lies every single day.
01:01He is at war with the working families of our country.
01:06Massive tax breaks for the rich through 15 million people off the health care that they had.
01:13And he has gotten us into this terrible, terrible war in Iran, which is, by the way, illegal and unconstitutional.
01:23That's the bad news, though.
01:26Here is the good news.
01:27The good news is that we as progressives are winning elections all across this country.
01:35We have won elections in New York, in New Jersey, in Colorado, California, in Washington, D.C., Seattle, Washington, in
01:45Ohio, in Montana, and a number of other places.
01:48And as I think most of you know, just the other day in Michigan, the progressive movement won two congressional
01:56elections and the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate with Dr. Abdul El-Sayed.
02:05Tremendous winning, tremendous winnings, three in a row in Michigan.
02:10So why are we winning elections?
02:12And I think the answer is obvious.
02:14People are sick and tired of status quo politics and establishment politics and establishment policies.
02:24They understand all across this country, in Vermont, Minnesota, Michigan, everywhere.
02:29They understand that our economy is rigged, that while working families struggle to put food on the table, pay for
02:36groceries, pay for health care, pay for housing, pay for everything.
02:40While they are struggling, the billionaire class, the people on top, have never, ever had it so good.
02:46They understand that we have more income and wealth inequality today than at any time in the history of the
02:54United States.
02:54Remember the Gilded Age, Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, Jay Gould, all those trillionaires?
03:01What you got now is more inequality than existed during those days at the end of the 19th century.
03:08And the American people also understand that we have a corrupt campaign finance system which is allowing billionaires and their
03:17super PACs to buy elections.
03:19Bottom line, the working families of our country want change.
03:25They want real change.
03:28That's why progressives all over this country are winning elections.
03:33And that's what Tuesday's election in Minnesota is all about.
03:38Peggy Flanagan understands that we have a corrupt campaign finance system.
03:45And she knows that very well because she is experiencing it right now.
03:52Billionaires and their super PACs are spending a record amount of money against her in this election.
03:59Somewhere around $20 million in the state of Minnesota.
04:04And if you can believe it, Peggy is being outspent 7 to 1 in outside, from outside spending.
04:14You know, what Peggy believes and what I believe, we believe in democracy.
04:18You got an opinion that's different than ours? Fine, go out. Let's argue it.
04:21You want to run against me? You want to run against Peggy? Fine. That's called democracy.
04:26But we cannot continue a broken and corrupt campaign finance system that allows billionaires to buy elections.
04:34And that's something very high on Peggy's agenda.
04:37Peggy also understands that our current health care system is broken.
04:41It is dysfunctional. It is wildly expensive.
04:45And that we need to do what every other major country on earth does.
04:50Guarantee health care to every man, woman and child as a human right through a Medicare for All program.
04:59And Peggy understands that we need to raise the minimum wage nationally to a living wage.
05:05And that we must demand that the billionaires in America finally start paying their fair share of taxes.
05:14Peggy understands that we're never, never going to support cutting Social Security when so many of our seniors are struggling
05:23today with inadequate incomes.
05:24And rather we have to expand Social Security by lifting the cap on taxable income.
05:30And she understands that we cannot allow Elon Musk and Zuckerberg and Ellison and Altman and other multi-billionaires to
05:44push their AI, their artificial intelligence policies, their robotics policies, through without strong safeguards.
05:53In other words, we've got to make AI and robotics work for working families, not just for the wealthiest people
05:59in the country.
06:01And unlike the President of the United States, Peggy understands that climate change is not a hoax, but that it
06:10is real.
06:11And that we can create millions of good paying jobs transitioning away from fossil fuels and toward energy efficiency and
06:19sustainable energy.
06:21Bottom line, or as all of you know, what Peggy is fighting for, what I am fighting for, what all
06:30of us are fighting for, is a government that represents all of us, not just the 1%.
06:38But in order to make that happen, we need Peggy in the United States Senate.
06:45So please, in the next few days, do everything that you can to see that Peggy Flanagan wins the Democratic
07:00Senate primary and that she becomes, in November, the next U.S. Senator from Minnesota.
07:09This is an enormously important election.
07:12Please, in the next few days, do everything you can to help Peggy.
07:16Let's win this thing.
07:17Thank you all very much.
