00:00Football is back. How about it? Unbelievable. That Hall of Fame game last night was terrific.
00:07And Carson Beck was out there and looked outstanding. I mean, I say you never want to overreact to the
00:13preseason.
00:14Did you see Carson Beck last night? Look at these numbers. And here's the thing, right?
00:19You see it on the board right there? Selected in the third round.
00:23And when they picked him, we made a big deal about it here on Shine Time because of his experience
00:29and what he did winning in Georgia and what he did in Miami last year.
00:33And he's a perfect fit in Michael Thor's system. And I thought he was sensational last night.
00:40Accuracy, arm strength, dropped it in the bucket a couple of times on a couple of deep throws.
00:46And if you've taken a look at the Cardinals' schedule, and I'm not challenging you. I don't think you're sitting
00:51around and just perusing who Arizona's playing in week four.
00:55Trust me when I tell you, the Arizona Cardinals might start the season 0-10.
01:00I mean, this schedule is as tough as it gets, which is why, even if it's not his fault, we
01:06might see Jacoby Brissett benched and Carson Beck is going to be under center sooner rather than later.
01:11So, I think when you look at it from a Carson Beck standpoint, this was absolutely a lot of fun.
01:18I was energized by having football back on TV. It's amazing, right?
01:24I mean, I try not to ever overreact when it comes to preseason, but I liked Carson Beck when they
01:30picked him, Monty Asenfort, the general manager.
01:32And here's the goal, right? You want Carson Beck to either be your backup for the foreseeable future, or he
01:41could be your starter and you don't have to draft a quarterback at the top of the draft.
01:46Cardinals should get a top pick, either pick one through three, right? I wouldn't be surprised if it was one
01:51or two.
01:51They enter this year, I believe most likely, with the Dolphins being the other team, to be the worst team
01:57in the NFL and thus get the top pick in the draft, which is a perfect segue into our NFC
02:05West preview.
02:07Listen, the Arizona Cardinals are the longest of long shots when it comes to winning a division in the NFL
02:16this year.
02:17So, because they're such a long shot, I mean, 10,000 to one to win the West, let's start with
02:24the Arizona Cardinals, because there is a 0% chance they win the division.
02:29And honestly, when you have three teams that can go to the Super Bowl this year in front of them,
02:35Arizona, sadly, is dead on arrival.
02:38And look at the Vegas over-under number.
02:41I hate to say this, because I like the Cardinals, I like their new coach, I like their general manager,
02:49I like the entire organization, I like the fan base.
02:52I would take, and this is dangerous territory, the best bet is the under for wins.
03:00Like, I'm just, you gotta trust me on it.
03:03I've been looking at this schedule.
03:05I don't know how they win a game in the division, where you look at San Francisco and L.A.,
03:10and you take a look at the defending champs, the Seahawks.
03:13I mean, they're gonna go 0-6.
03:15They start the season with the Chargers.
03:17I don't know how they're going to win any games.
03:21So, I actually love the under for the Arizona Cardinals.
03:26I think they will win between 0 and 3 games this year.
03:30Now, I do like Mike LaFleur.
03:32I think that was a really inspired choice to be the head coach, and you can tell how much this
03:37means to him.
03:38Love that on NBC last night, where you had Matt LaFleur, Mike LaFleur, miked up together.
03:45Mike didn't know his brother was gonna be there.
03:47That whole thing was absolutely terrific and tremendous, and I think Mike LaFleur is a terrific, terrific choice and inspired
03:56as a head coach.
03:57He's a great offensive mind, you know, comes from that McVeigh tree, just terrific.
04:01Now, Jacoby Bursette's gonna be the starting quarterback, and he should.
04:05Bursette was really strong last year.
04:07I think eventually Carson Beck's gonna be the guy because they're gonna lose a lot of games,
04:12and they're gonna need to figure out if Carson Beck can play, and if he's gonna be the starter for
04:16the foreseeable future.
04:17And also, when they start 0-2, 0-3, whatever it is, and you just got this nice Hall of
04:24Fame game sample size from Carson Beck,
04:26you're gonna want to make that change.
04:28Now, I do think Trey McBride, you should draft him in fantasy.
04:32I love Trey McBride.
04:33Great guy, great dude, terrific player, one of the best offensive weapons in the sport.
04:37He's gonna have a monster season once again.
04:40I think Jeremiah Love, I love that pick.
04:43You know, third overall pick of the draft.
04:45Not just a running back, when you look at Jeremiah Love, he's a weapon.
04:49He's a star.
04:50He's a stud.
04:51He's most likely, we talked about it on Shine Time yesterday, odds, Vegas most likely to win the Offensive Rookie
04:59of the Year.
04:59The only question is gonna be, will he get enough touches and carries, I should frame it that way,
05:04when they're constantly gonna be trailing in game?
05:07I'm sure Bursette's gonna look to check down to him.
05:09Marvin Harrison Jr. needs to produce.
05:12Let's be crystal clear.
05:13There's no question about it.
05:15I mean, this is year three.
05:16You can color me stunt that he continues to have the yips, he can't catch a cold.
05:21Michael Wilson's been the number one guy.
05:23No excuse this year for Marvin Harrison Jr.
05:26Listen, I think the Arizona Cardinals are going to be dreadful.
05:29I feel bad saying it.
05:31I love that organization, but I will absolutely bet the under for wins for the Arizona Cardinals.
05:39But I want to stress, they're moving in the right direction.
05:42I'm a big fan of Mike LaFleur.
05:44I thought that was an inspired choice.
05:47I like Monte Austin Ford as the general manager, but I would bet the under here for the Cardinals,
05:53when you look at it in the over-under for the win total for this upcoming season.
05:58The Rams are an absolute powerhouse.
06:01And listen, in terms of betting on the Rams, I mean, you're gonna shop till you drop.
06:06You absolutely have to bet the over on wins.
06:09We've been through the schedule on numerous occasions.
06:12I mean, to me, the only question is, do you give them 12, 13, 14, 15 wins?
06:17I mean, they are absolutely unequivocally the best team on paper.
06:23And when you start talking about coach and you start talking about Sean McVay and, you
06:28know, I love him to win the division and you could talk about betting them to win the conference
06:31and, you know, they will be in consideration for me on the handful of teams and they are
06:37absolutely the Vegas favorite when it comes to winning the Super Bowl.
06:40So, Sean McVay's won before.
06:42I talk to him all the time on my Sirius XM radio show.
06:45Does a great job getting stars to play together.
06:48He's a terrific natural leader.
06:50Gets cohesion on a team.
06:52Love Sean McVay.
06:53I would bet the over on the wins.
06:55I would bet him to win the division.
06:56I would bet him to win the conference.
06:58And listen, they've got the best odds, I mean, to win the division, to win the conference.
07:02And they're the biggest favorites to win the Super Bowl in L.A.
07:06I would absolutely bet on Matthew Stafford doing MVP Hall of Fame.
07:09Thanks, once again.
07:10I mean, I know he's getting up there in age.
07:13I don't care.
07:15Matthew Stafford's one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
07:17No signs of slowing down.
07:19He's going to have another monster season throwing the ball to Puka Nakua.
07:23I know it was, you know, not a great offseason for Puka.
07:26It sounds like, based upon the press conferences that Puka has given us during training camp,
07:32that Puka understands what he can do, what he can't do.
07:35And I would like to think that Puka Nakua has grown up a little bit, I hope, for L.A.
07:40Devontae Adams is also a Hall of Famer.
07:43And Devontae Adams is your number two as a touchdown machine.
07:46He's unbelievable.
07:47And I just love the tight ends that McVeigh has at his disposal.
07:52And that's going to add in terms of creativity.
07:55They're going to run the ball effectively with Kyron Williams.
07:58I think Blake Corum is solid.
07:59They have the ability to run with multiple backs.
08:02The offensive line is strong.
08:04Oh, by the way, Miles Garrett.
08:07I mean, it's kind of crazy, right?
08:09I mean, it's amazing when you stop and think about it.
08:11And I still can't believe they traded for the guy who won the Defensive Player of the Year,
08:16the number one sack artist in the NFL.
08:19And we had less need on shine time.
08:21He said, Miles Garrett's the ultimate starting pitcher and a closer.
08:24You jump out to a lead and then, bam, you're going to have Miles Garrett sacking the passer.
08:29Think about all those times where they didn't have the lead in Cleveland.
08:33And at the end of the day, you know, you look at it and Miles Garrett was still able to
08:37disrupt everyone.
08:37Miles Garrett this year is going to have, and he's already a first ballot Hall of Famer
08:43whenever he calls it a career and he's not close to being done, he's got the best year of his
08:46career.
08:47Like, I think for him and under Chris Shula and playing with the lead
08:53and playing in all these big-time, meaningful, prime-time games
08:56and the juggernaut that is the NFC West,
08:59Miles Garrett's going to have the most dominant, impactful year that he's ever had in his life.
09:04By the way, they traded for Trent McDuffie.
09:06And that was the move of the offseason before Miles Garrett was the move of the offseason.
09:10See a problem, fix a problem.
09:11They couldn't stop the forward pass on Championship Sunday.
09:14Struggled with the forward pass down the stretch of the season.
09:17So Les Snead was able to bring in different DBs,
09:20most especially right from the get-go to start the offseason, Trent McDuffie.
09:24Look, if Aaron Donald signs,
09:27that means Aaron Donald believes that he's ready to be Aaron Donald.
09:31And that means one of the all-time great players
09:33in the history of the National Football League on defense.
09:36So I can't stress enough in terms of previewing the NFC West
09:40how much I love the Rams.
09:42They're unequivocally going to be my pick to win the division.
09:45Again, we don't lock anything in because of injuries,
09:48trades, free agency, the whole thing until right around Labor Day.
09:51But that's the mindset.
09:53The only question is how far will I ultimately pick them to go.
09:57But there's a reason why they are the favorite in Vegas
10:00when it comes to winning the NFC, winning the Super Bowl.
10:04That's the expectation.
10:06They've got the galaxy of stars.
10:08They're not slowing down.
10:09And listen, winning the L.A. Super Bowl is in the cards,
10:12and that would be the ultimate Hollywood ending for the L.A. Rams.
10:15The San Francisco 49ers are a conundrum, a real conundrum.
10:23And it's like Vegas wasn't quite sure here what to do with them
10:27because the over-under basically says playoff team or not.
10:32Make the playoffs.
10:33It's only minus 146.
10:36They've got the third-best odds to win the division.
10:39Now, I want to acknowledge here the upside if everything is copacetic
10:44and everyone's healthy and Kyle Shanahan's okay.
10:47You know, their upside is to go to the Super Bowl and win it.
10:50The problem is Kyle Shanahan, who was involved in that awful car accident,
10:55is still not coaching in training camp.
10:58So that is now a football story.
11:01And by the way, the first game of the season,
11:04it's the Rams and the Niners in Australia on that first Thursday of the NFL season.
11:11So this is a problem here.
11:13And listen, I don't want to make too big a deal about injury reports in July and August,
11:19but look, we know Ricky Pearsall is out for the year.
11:22He's on season-ending injury reserve.
11:24But you have Mike Evans, who's been great during training camp,
11:27but, you know, he's missed practice time, and George Kittle's missed practice time.
11:31And that's just under the umbrella of it's just not what you want.
11:36So I think Brock Purdy is a terrific quarterback.
11:40I don't think he gets the credit and respect that he deserves in the court of public opinion.
11:44But I think Shanahan is a big reason why he's been so strong.
11:49We ranked the running backs in the NFL the other day on Shine Time.
11:52We had Christian McCaffrey as the third-best running back in the league,
11:55and he is as tough and as physical and as valuable as it gets.
11:59If you are a fan of the San Francisco 49ers, you understand the meaning.
12:03Mike Evans is an absolute stud.
12:06We'd call that a significant, a free agent signing, as any in the NFL.
12:11That will equal wins for San Francisco.
12:14George Kittle is back.
12:15That's a big deal.
12:16Trent Williams on the offensive line.
12:18The big deals on defense, Nick Bosa and Fred Warner are back.
12:22They're healthy.
12:23And these guys are, you know, stars, all pro players.
12:28And getting them back and healthy is simply everything when you look at it for San Francisco.
12:36I don't know what I'm going to do with the Niners yet.
12:38I try not to overreact on bad vibes for a team.
12:43But then again, we've seen bad vibes equal bad play on numerous occasions with injuries and drama and contractual situations.
12:52And, you know, if you can get San Francisco to not make the playoffs a plus money, that might be
12:58your best bet.
12:59And I love the talent.
13:00I love the coach.
13:01I don't know if the coach is going to be there.
13:03So, I mean, at this stage, I acknowledge the upside.
13:07I think it's important to acknowledge the downside.
13:09I, right now, in early August, wouldn't touch anything for the San Francisco 49ers.
13:17There's not a bet I would place on the Niners.
13:20I'm going to wait and see if everyone's healthy and if Kyle Shanahan could coach.
13:25Because I acknowledge the upside here.
13:28But there's something off when you look at it for the San Francisco 49ers.
13:32Then you have the Seahawks.
13:34And, you know, I love Mike McDonald's.
13:37And I love Sam Darnold.
13:39I'm a Sam Darnold guy.
13:40It is interesting how Vegas is treating the champs.
13:43And I want to give Vegas credit.
13:45Ten and a half?
13:46Feels right.
13:47Second best odds?
13:48Not the best.
13:49At plus two or five to win the division?
13:51Sounds right.
13:52I don't think it's a hot take to say Seattle takes a step back.
13:57Look, they lost three key players on defense.
14:00Kenneth Walker signed in Kansas City.
14:03Now, I love Sam Darnold.
14:05I think Sam Darnold's unbelievable.
14:07I think Jackson Smith and Jigna is an absolute star.
14:09Sam Darnold has always had the talent.
14:12He's found it the last couple of years.
14:14Am I allowed to wonder, allow that Clint Kubiak's no longer there?
14:18Now, I think Sam is going to have another terrific season.
14:21I'm a huge fan of Sam Darnold.
14:24I'm just at this stage, when you look at it, I can't sit here and tell you that you're going
14:32to see in a year where everything went right for Seattle, a lock for them to do anything on this
14:38board.
14:39I think their upside is to go to the Super Bowl and repeat and win it.
14:44Rams will be my pick in the division.
14:46Seattle with Jackson Smith and Jigna is going to have another monster season.
14:50He's going to be absolutely positively terrific again.
14:53Draft him in fantasy.
14:54In reality, he's one of the best receivers, top four in the NFL.
14:58Absolutely love him.
14:59JSN, you know, Offensive Player of the Year.
15:02They just spelt his name right on that trophy.
15:04The guy is absolutely incredible, and I'm obsessed with what he brings to the table.
15:09And that defense could be the best in the NFL.
15:12I think it's the best in the NFC.
15:15The Texans is the best in the NFL.
15:17And I think that Mike McDonald, who's a brilliant defense of mine, will make sure that that defense is ready
15:23to rock and roll
15:24and ready to handle success and prosperity and understand that they're going to be the hunted, not going to sneak
15:31up on anyone.
15:31But I'll tell you, I am not picking Seattle, though, to win the division.
15:37I'm not picking Seattle to make the Super Bowl again.
15:42But I think that when you – and all these – even the over-under kind of makes me nervous.
15:48I lean on the over, and I'll probably pick the Seahawks to make the playoffs because I'm obsessed with Sam
15:56Darnold.
15:56I'm obsessed with Mike McDonald.
15:58I love Gray Zabel on the offensive line, voted him for the Offensive Rookie of the Year, even as a
16:03guard.
16:04Jackson Smith and Jigua is special.
16:06I love John Schneider, the general manager.
16:08They were able to replenish at the running back position.
16:11I think that this team is so smart and buttoned up, and they have a great home field advantage,
16:17and that's a big deal when these other teams have to travel to the great Northwest.
16:21But seeing Seattle repeat for a championship, I would be floored if that happened in the great Northwest this season.
