00:03how we doing everybody this is Tyler Ward covering all things New York Mets for the
00:07straight-out plushing podcast here on the New York Post Sports YouTube channel and today we're going
00:11to get into how the New York Mets are having fun again after sweeping the Cleveland Guardians this
00:17past week taking the first three there in that series they are now set for a continued road
00:22trip that'll be easier said than done but one thing is certain the Mets are playing with some
00:27fun let's get into it everybody as you guys can let us know your thoughts and reactions in the
00:31comments down below here on the New York Post Sports YouTube channel or wherever you get your
00:36podcast for straight out of flushing now let's start off with the obvious okay who had on their
00:41bingo card the Mets playing more free fun baseball with a lack of expectation post deadline I know I
00:47did I'm sure many Mets fans watching this may have felt the same too but to this degree I'm not
00:52entirely sure I mean if you would have told me if the Mets would go on to sweep the Guardians
00:55who
00:56albeit are not a great team in baseball but a solid team in baseball when the Mets are currently 16
01:02games below 500 I would have said I may have a bridge to sell you but in reality the New
01:06York
01:07Mets not only took down the Guardians comfortably including a big 13 to 6 victory to wrap up the
01:12series this past day but they're playing in an environment that looks like everyone is buying in
01:18and how much of this has to do with the Mets selling spree versus Andy Green their interim manager
01:23is it a combination of both and more than likely is and let's get into how that is first and
01:27foremost
01:27so let's start with the Andy Green factor okay as many of you guys know Andy Green Mets interim
01:33manager is not someone that is expected to be manager beyond the 2026 season as he's fully
01:39anticipating to go back into his player development role for 2027 and beyond now Andy as we know known
01:45for player development has raved about young Mets starters Christian Scott Noel McClain and most recently
01:51Zach Thornton he also is obviously raved about guys that he's had his hands over the past couple
01:55years and Carson Bench and AJ Ewing just to name a few of their offensive breakouts so between the
02:01Mets having a bit of a different clubhouse culture vibe how much of that goes in hand with having a
02:06different voice and it goes without saying but by having a different voice it is not going to change
02:11everything that is wrong with a club especially for a Mets team that will truly have to have a miraculous
02:16run do somehow some way still contend for postseason play it goes without saying that their
02:21season is essentially unofficially over but until we finally hear that song saying and we finally find
02:26out that they're officially out of it let's enjoy this little run while they find themselves having
02:30it and the key about Andy Green here is that he has changed the philosophy a bit and how the
02:35Mets
02:35operate between his in-game management which I personally have been satisfied with more often than not
02:41as well as even at times a lineups that haven't looked necessarily the prettiest on paper they've turned
02:46out successful in recent weeks for the New York Mets who yes have been Jekyll and Hywood overall
02:50production from getting swept at home against Miami to sweeping Cleveland on the road that is what lies
02:57now the second aspect of this and that is post-traded line thoughts and as we all know from AJ
03:03Mentor to Hawaska Brosban to Luke Weaver and Brooks Raley what do all these pitchers have in common
03:09they're no longer New York Mets and the Mets replacements in that bullpen are the also electrifying
03:14that we have a lot to say on in today's show that being in Jeffrey Yon is Southpaw as well
03:18as fellow
03:19Southpaw and Nate Lavender you have Danil Nunez remember his Linsanity run in 2024 and Chase
03:25McDermott who the Mets acquired and trade for Ben Rorvit who didn't play a single game for them for the
03:29most part this entire season the Mets traded away on paper one of the better bullpens all major league
03:34baseball and since then they're now unproven veteran bullpen and I say veteran because while
03:41multiple of these pitchers made major league debuts over the past couple days in Nate Lavender and
03:46Jeffrey Yon in particular doesn't change the fact that these guys aren't young you know they're
03:50towards their late 20s early 30s finally getting a taste at the major league level and between the
03:55Mets no longer having an expectation this season as to what the results are going to entail for the
03:59club moving forward as well as a club that now has a lack of pressure on them knowing that the
04:05trade deadline has come and went players are know who they're going to be who are going to stay and
04:10the ones that have been dealt they knew for a while were more than likely going to be dealt so
04:14now that
04:14that pressure is no longer looming over them and there isn't this kind of cloud taking over what's
04:19been such a terrible season for the Mets as is now it's free range for the new guys to step
04:24up and
04:24make a positive impact and the newcomers have not only made a positive impact but they're reminding
04:29Mets fans exactly why you know what in a 162 things can get crazy and while I will absolutely be
04:36jaw
04:37dropped if the Mets can make something of the season at this rate it is great to see you guys
04:41now finally
04:41starting to play the way that they should it's just a shame that they are unable to do this when
04:45there's actual pressure and you know something on the line for them in the season starting off with
04:51these relievers here let's begin with Daniel Nunez as we know Nunez gave up a couple owner and runs
04:57in this outing against Cleveland because of a charity on error otherwise looked more than fine
05:02the velocity that is there for Nunez has a slide piece and let's not forget in the 2024 first half
05:08of the season over 20 innings pitch for the New York Mets a veteran long-time minor leaguer in Daniel
05:13Nunez was looking like Edwin Diaz light for the Mets touching high 90s on the gun high 80s on the
05:19slider and was inducing a lot of swing and miss now Nunez sadly went down with injury which derailed
05:24his entire second half in 2024 and most of 2025 but he's now back with a vengeance and is trying
05:30to
05:30make himself a mainstay for this bullpen for 2027 and beyond and that's what's also exciting about
05:36the Mets playing fun and free a lot of it goes in hand with guys trying to compete to actually
05:41stay
05:41here beyond the 2026 season now I know you may say why would anyone in the right mind want to
05:47be on
05:47the New York Mets in 2027 believe it or not there are players that actually wouldn't hate that thought
05:52and among them we have of course Nate Lavender who is a great story of a style pop for the
05:56New York
05:56Mets he has pitched 2.1 school settings of work in this series to begin his major league career
06:01and not only did Lavender impress big time in 2024 with his nice little hesitations
06:05of his holding his right leg up kind of like a Nestor Cortez type of way and he had results
06:11in doing so
06:12unfortunately for Lavender he went down with injury right towards the end of 2024 spring training
06:16missed all the year then was acquired by the Tampa Bay Rays because I believe he was picked up
06:20through the Rule 5 draft was injured most of last year he is sent back to the New York Mets
06:25and now
06:25he also is back with a vengeance Lavender filling one of the two Southpaw roles that were obviously
06:31vacant because of Brooks Raley and A.G. Mintry having been dealt is a seamless fit thus far in his
06:36first
06:37couple outings and hopefully that can continue very impressive start for Nate Lavender who has helped
06:41rejuvenize what is now a completely rebuilt bullpen with the exception of Devin Williams and then that
06:47brings us to Jeffrey Yon the man of the hour the man of the week the man of major league
06:53baseball as
06:53we know it if you are opposing fan of Jeffrey Yon if you're opposing player facing Jeffrey Yon you
06:59probably don't like his antics but here's the thing Jeffrey Yon does not care how you feel as he's never
07:04going to change that about his game Jeffrey Yon is at the young age of 29 has been doing these
07:08absolutely extroverted celebrations after every key out he makes especially a strikeout jumping up
07:14and down on the mound for as long as we can remember this is nothing new if you guys know
07:18the Jeffrey Yon story he's been doing this pretty much throughout the entirety of his career over the
07:22past half decade especially he has had his fair share of jumps up and down this has happened
07:27consistently in Syracuse this year as well with an over 12 caper nine so he's striking out guys at a
07:32great rate and an expected era that looked very favorable as well but the walk rate was high and
07:38Syracuse and Yon has been this journeyman throughout his career so all the more power to the New York
07:42Mets to look at a lively arm a very extroverted personality a guy who just loves baseball more
07:47than anything and embrace it and say let's see what we can work with here and the Mets have done
07:52that
07:52and Jeffrey Yon's electrifying major league debut included a scroll setting with a massive strikeout
07:58that we saw to begin the outing in which he got them looking at 89 slide piece inside
08:03and then promptly did his big jump up and big jump down now to Mets fans out there that think
08:10this is
08:10going to be Edwin Diaz 2023 WBC situation to be determined but Yon has been doing this jump very
08:16very consistently on the mound so as long as history has anything to do with the future of Jeffrey Yon
08:22he should be okay health-wise by doing it and not only is Yon having so much fun on the
08:27mound but you can
08:27tell that the Mets really enjoy his his extroverted personality it's feeding off of the rest of the
08:32players in the clubhouse and you could tell as he celebrated mightily in the Mets clubhouse and
08:37their dugout rather after his scrolls outing in Cleveland and they were all filled with jubilation
08:42as was he so hopefully that is a trend upward because if Jeffrey Yon antics aside with what he
08:47does on the mound when it comes to celebration his stuff is legit his slider looks like a major big
08:53deal
08:53we're looking at 88 to 91 plus on the gun you look at a fastball that's sitting 99 to 101
08:58plus on the gun
08:59no pitcher for the Mets this entire season even dotted night 101 on the gun this season until
09:05Jeffrey Yon just made his season debut so for people out there that want to criticize Jeffrey Yon and how
09:11he celebrates go ahead but at the end of the day he's going to continue to be him and he's
09:16going to
09:16hopefully continue to lead the Mets to strong results and if Jeffrey Yon does continue the pace
09:22he is at which is pitching lively exciting and being a positive to the Mets both on and off the
09:28field
09:28rest assured that is absolutely someone the Mets will consider beyond the 2026 season
09:33is it a lock is a guarantee of course not with how David Stearns operates Yon could go the next
09:3910 outings before the season ends without giving up a run and they could still not bring him back for
09:44next season relievers are fickle it's hard to find consistency but I think that's also why it's
09:49imperative to see what you have currently in the organization if you would like to run it back
09:53with any of these players for 2027 as you're actually trying to position to actually I don't
09:57know maybe make playoffs just a thought chase McDermott as well another positive influence
10:03to this bullpen scrolls outing for a guy who has had major league experience in his career
10:07albeit it hasn't been anything crazy hasn't been anything overly extensive that we've seen
10:12so are the New York Mets playing fun are they playing loose absolutely and it's not just because
10:18they're electrifying offense that put up 18 hits and 13 runs in the series finale helping the series sweep
10:23against the guardians but it has a lot to do with trading away a lot of guys and the Mets
10:27being
10:27fine without them you know when we think realistically about this with the Mets trading
10:32clay homes that obviously hurts no doubt when it comes to a rotation adverse is not Robert Stock has
10:37looked good in his first outing we'll see how he how he does in his next outing as he's the
10:40Mets
10:41number five starter right now he looked very good his first outing which was also the longest and
10:45best of his career at the young age of 36 touching 97 plus on the gun though has a nice
10:50change up
10:50and really reworked his arsenal a lot this year and was looking brilliant in spring training before
10:55going down with surgery that had him out for the majority of the season but now he's back so while
11:01the Mets did trade Freddie Peralta and clay homes away and their entire bullpen and Tyrone Taylor
11:05this is a lineup though that can absolutely still do damage with or without Juan Soto we have seen that
11:10over the past couple days we'll see more of that with guys like AGU and Carson mentioned hopefully
11:14a bit of an excited Francisco Indoor coming off of a big game back in the leadoff spot
11:19for the New York Mets I mean even guys like Marcus Simeon who I'm not going to bank on have
11:23been
11:23performing better as of late Francisco Alvarez had a productive day Luis Terenz has been absolutely
11:28tremendous lately and really top to bottom the Mets have a lot of weapons in that lineup so it's
11:33easy to see how they can get more fun and more excitement out of those guys now with the lack
11:38of
11:38pressure as to what this season is going to entail for them initially having playoffs if not World Series
11:43aspirations now it's just to wrap up the year and play fun loose baseball and that should hopefully bring
11:48the best out of the young player developments of guys like Asia Ewing and Carson Bench continued
11:52and Carson talk about a series massive series multiple bombs have himself obviously we saw the
11:58triple as well big series and AJ Ewing we know can be dynamic and of course can impact things both
12:03in the outfield on the base running and most certainly with the bat so yeah the Mets have a lot
12:10to be
12:10happy about right now post traded line hence why things are a lot more fun for them than were things
12:15were 72 plus hours ago however just because they're having short-term fun doesn't mean they're going to have
12:21long-term fun so we will continue to follow follow on every step of the way for the New York
12:26Mets
12:26throughout the remainder of the season to see how the young player development looks under
12:29Andy Green as manager and honestly how much different that is versus what Carlos Mendoza was doing
12:35because it goes without saying obviously but when you have Carlos Mendoza who felt like he constantly
12:40missed the mark on properly getting to players in which his voice was properly heard with Andy Green
12:45he's more of a straight shooter and that straight shooting mentality has led to more success for the
12:50New York Mets including putting Kodai Singa back in that one inning role in the bullpen where he
12:54should have been a long time ago and which he's now having great success as well as getting creative
12:59with the lineup and not being as stubborn on it in ways that we saw Carlos Mendoza with what he
13:04had
13:04his hands on as Mets manager most certainly missed the mark on so for Andy a different voice nothing
13:11crazy but certainly looking like it's a step in the right direction for the New York Mets as they look
13:16to hopefully round out this season on a far greater note than how we got here to this point
13:21Mets fans let us know your thoughts in the comments down below not only on the boys finally having fun
13:26again but how Jeffrey Yon has been without a doubt a lightning rod of excitement jolted further
13:33into this club we'll have a similar impact like omg down the stretch where the Mets could really make
13:37something happen here or will this just be a nice little fool's goal that we can enjoy in the
13:41meantime when in reality this is nothing short of a lost season whatever your thoughts are drop them
