00:00Anyone in the Isle of Grain this evening would have been able to see pillars of smoke across
00:03the horizon as a wildfire broke out in a field near West Lane.
00:07As we've been standing here we've been able to see the source of that smoke, these red
00:11hot flames behind me that are eating away at this Isle of Grain field and just over
00:15my right shoulder you might not be able to see it from this distance but there have been
00:18fire engines that have been using their hoses to try and take down the fire with a tractor
00:22cutting through some of that undergrowth.
00:25There were multiple engines on the scene as well as the South East Coast Ambulance Service
00:29who were also in attendance.
00:30There was even a farmer who was trying to use his tractor to make a break in the fire
00:34while Kent Fire and Rescue Service were on the ground with breathing apparatus working
00:38on putting it out.
00:39While I was down there I met the man who was the first witness to the incident.
00:42It was going up really well and to be honest if they didn't cut it off from where it was
00:48there's another field behind that that goes on for three miles and then goes right the
00:52way past the power station there's all cows and people that walk across there and that's
00:56his livelihood because that's part of his corn.
00:59All that next field is all corn.
01:01Kent Fire and Rescue Service said in an update at 6pm that firefighters continue to make good
01:05progress at a wildfire on West Lane at the Isle of Grain and are working with a farmer
01:10to create a fire break.
01:11People living or travelling nearby are still being advised to keep windows and doors closed.
01:16They added please share this information with anyone who may not have social media.
01:20Christopher added it wasn't the first time the area had seen fires.
01:23It just seems like the last couple of weeks this is starting to happen so we do get other
01:29people come up to the area.
01:32It's free we don't keep going up against people I know you can't come up here you know.
01:36That 6pm update shows they were still working to beat the fire from then creating breaks
01:41in the field and hosing it down as the whole county continues through this heat.
