00:01All right, here we are, on this Red Table Talk via Stefan's.
00:06I remember telling you, are you gay?
00:11You're Gloria Stefan.
00:13You're a gay icon, and Ren didn't want to let you down.
00:18He said, if you tell your grandma and she dies, her blood is on your hands.
00:22You're remembering things in a different way.
00:26I was suicidal.
00:27I'm sorry that we didn't get that.
00:31And I hate to know that I was part of that hurt.
00:36One second, Chloe.
00:38Family friend, Rosie O'Donnell.
00:41Emily, do you forgive her for that?
00:44And actress Michelle Rodriguez reveals her truth.
00:47She's openly bisexual.
00:49I like boys. I like girls. I like both.
00:52Welcome!
01:03Welcome to Red Table Talk via Stefan's.
01:06And we're always going to talk about real stuff, but today we've got to bring our iron hearts.
01:10Yes.
01:10We actually went to therapy to prepare for this.
01:13We're going to heal together. We're going to grow together.
01:15By the end of this, we're going to be ready to go, girl.
01:16Yes, let's go.
01:17Oh boy.
01:18Talk about it.
01:20You've got a secret to tell. Don't hold it back.
01:23Basta la lingua, no te vas a arrepentir.
01:27In 1990, I was in a terrible bus accident.
01:31And not only did doctors think I'd never walk again, they told me I wouldn't be able to have more
01:35children.
01:36After years of struggling with infertility, finally, un milagro, a miracle.
01:43Emily is the daughter I never thought I would have.
01:45And we were overjoyed. We were all overjoyed.
01:48We still are.
01:49When she was 21, just four years ago, Emily asked me if I thought she might be gay.
01:55Oh, Emily.
01:56Yes, Emily.
01:58We were in the car, and you leaned over very excitedly and asked your dad and I,
02:04guys, do you think that I might be gay?
02:09And do you remember my response to you?
02:11I do. You said only you can know that.
02:14Exactly.
02:14But when I asked you that question, it was like testing the waters, you know?
02:18Because I was afraid.
02:20I was having conversations in my head, trying to figure out, who am I?
02:24What is this?
02:25Where do I fit?
02:26I was learning that I preferred women.
02:28I mean, we're putting it on the table.
02:30I had my first sexual experience with a woman, and then two weeks later with a man,
02:34because I'm like, okay, maybe something's wrong with me.
02:36I felt ashamed.
02:38You know what I mean?
02:39Mind you, I had no clue that you had had any kind of experience with anybody, male or female.
02:44I was really private about that.
02:45I had never met somebody that I thought was worth bringing into the family.
02:50My partner now, Jem, we've been together almost four years.
02:53We started to date, and I knew that there was something different here.
02:56At that time, nobody knew we were together, and we had already been dating for a couple months.
03:00We were taking things slow on our own.
03:02When I was finally ready to come out with this information, I was really nervous.
03:08Your mom is one of the most open-minded people, but I don't think you felt that.
03:15Well, I can tell you why I didn't feel that.
03:17I was like, hey, I'm in love with this girl.
03:20The first thing you said was, if you tell your grandma and she dies, her blood is on your hands.
03:30I just wasn't ready for that, because I understand.
03:33My grandma was old, but I already made it feel like, okay, whatever it is, hide it.
03:38It's not okay.
03:38So that's where my hurt started.
03:40I'm never going to forget that.
03:42Just like you were in that turmoil of emotion, you're remembering things, as we all tend to do, in a
03:49different way.
03:50You know all the challenges I had gone through with your grandma?
03:53My mother and I had a complicated relationship.
03:57She was controlling and set in her ways.
04:00At one point, we were even estranged for two years.
04:04I was trying to protect both my ailing mother from any shot that could affect her health, and Emily from
04:11anything that could harm their relationship.
04:14What I told you was, when you're going to tell your grandma, why don't you first introduce her to your
04:23girlfriend or your friend?
04:25Have her get to know her a little, because Abuela has ulcerative colitis, an emotional disease.
04:31She almost died in 2007.
04:34Every time she would get upset, it was like, uh-oh.
04:39I know that it was coming from love, from protection, and she was elderly.
04:43Me and my grandma were like this, like this.
04:45You know that more than anybody.
04:47You were the apple of her eye, okay?
04:49But you're saying, oh, because of this now, you've got to put this up.
04:52Mama, we're trying to protect my mom, too.
04:53And I get it.
04:54I totally get it.
04:55Because I knew that she might get ill.
04:56What about me?
04:57We needed to protect Abuela, but I needed you guys.
05:00I know, Mama, but I really thought that you were much stronger, that all your life, you've done what you
05:05wanted every step of the way.
05:06In my mind and heart, I thought you were the biggest badass, strong...
05:12Joke's on you.
05:13Okay, Mama, but listen, this is what I thought.
05:16That's what I thought, too.
05:18Exactly.
05:18That's what we all thought.
05:19Okay, your mom is in the middle of two generations.
05:22Yes.
05:23One, which is your grandma, that was extremely conservative.
05:26Oh, yes.
05:26Different life.
05:27So I think for your mom, it's dealing with you.
05:31Sexuality now, for us, is like perfectly normal for anybody to talk about their sexuality.
05:39That wasn't like that when your grandma grew up.
05:42Oh, no, I know.
05:42So even her talking to her mom about sexuality, did that ever happen?
05:47No, absolutely not.
05:49My mother bought me the Lifecycle Library and expected me to self-learn.
05:54My mother would not even let us joke about sex.
05:59I'm a very ashamed person, though.
06:01But we had no clue about that.
06:03We had no clue until...
06:04But how?
06:04You know, you say, how could we not have known?
06:07It's not like I didn't suspect at some moments.
06:11I remember being in my bedroom, and I remember telling you, Mama, are you gay?
06:16Do you want to carry the gay flag?
06:17Because if you want, I will get on that parade float with you, and I will carry that flag.
06:23And at that moment, you said to me, Mom, I'm not gay.
06:27Because that wasn't the word in your mind for who you were.
06:31I'm still figuring out a way.
06:34Exactly.
06:34I don't think we would have ever, ever, ever, Emily, processed what you were going through like that.
06:43Because if there is one thing that we always said was, like, Emily is perfect.
06:48She knows exactly what she wants.
06:52We would get from you someone that was perfectly fine in her own skin.
06:59Never.
06:59Never.
07:00Did we talk about, oh, my God, do you think we're going to have, you know, Emily?
07:03No.
07:04For us, and I'm sorry that we didn't see that part.
07:07And this is important for the people that are seeing the show.
07:10Yes.
07:10Yeah, absolutely.
07:11That we look at our kids sometimes like perfect.
07:13And we don't know.
07:14We don't have a clue.
07:16I think it came to a point where that perfect child, there was a wall there with something that we
07:22didn't see that wall.
07:24Right.
07:25Believe me.
07:26I think we would have talked about it right away.
07:28I was falling apart.
07:30Like, I wanted to be strong and act like I was cool.
07:33Wow.
07:33But my life went on pause.
07:35I didn't care if every single person in the world knew I was gay.
07:38I was worried about my family because my grandma was older and sick.
07:43And I felt like, wow, like, this is something that could kill somebody.
07:46Somebody.
07:46I told you to eat.
07:47Hold on.
07:48The day I said that to you, by the way, you had taken me to the bitter end.
07:52You know, I'm a patient human being.
07:54But you weren't hearing me.
07:56And I was trying to talk to you.
07:58But I didn't feel like you were hearing me.
08:00I understand that.
08:01And also, when this whole thing happened, then it became, oh, well, don't hold Jam Pan in public.
08:05What if Abuela's friend's there and she's going to take a picture?
08:07And from my perspective, I can't go to dinner and put my arm around my girlfriend without you saying.
08:12You might as well put a sign around your neck.
08:14Okay.
08:14No, wait a minute.
08:15Let me remind you of where this came from, all right?
08:17Again.
08:18Okay, so if you don't want to hear my perspective on my, you know.
08:22I'm sorry.
08:23I want to hear your perspective.
08:24It's just, again, even just that answer, right?
08:27No way, shape or form, should you ever tell your daughter.
08:31Why do you got to walk in here with your arm around your girlfriend and put a sign around your
08:35neck?
08:35No.
08:36You don't say that.
08:37Listen to me.
08:37I want it to be your story.
08:40I thought that you had told me that you weren't ready.
08:42And I didn't want to give your story to some person that might be sitting there having dinner to post.
08:48Okay, but my life became hyper aware.
08:51Super anxious.
08:52I understand.
08:52Super anxious.
08:53Can I touch your hand?
08:54Can I sit here?
08:55It was like dense.
08:57I understand that, mama.
08:58But then I'm a celebrity's kid, so if I go out and live my life and somebody takes a picture,
09:02I'm hosed.
09:03Every single thing that was brought to me had to do with moving pieces around me about my life, about
09:09my career, about what about this, what about this, not what about you.
09:14For any parent, we love unconditionally, alright? And what we try to do sometimes to protect you, you know, ends
09:26up hurting you, which kills me and I hate that that happened.
09:31Emily was about to step into the spotlight and release her debut album.
09:35Emily was about to step into the spotlight and release her debut album.
09:36The launch of her music career was a moment of pride for the family.
09:40And her grandmother was already her biggest fan.
09:42My abuelita, thank you for sacrificing everything.
09:46But with fame comes a loss of privacy.
09:49I feared a controversy about Emily's sexuality would overshadow her hard work and her music.
09:58I've been in this world for decades.
10:02So when you come to me, right before you're about to put out your album...
10:07Okay, but who cares?
10:08Mama, hold on.
10:09I'm trying to explain to you.
10:10Again, even this perspective is like, guys, you're missing the point.
10:13But wait, you're talking about my career?
10:16I was suicidal.
10:17But we didn't know that, Mama.
10:19I'm sorry that we didn't get that.
10:22We had no way of knowing this.
10:24The things that I was facing in the moment were so crippling that I couldn't see anything but the hurt.
10:30I understand that.
10:31You know?
10:31And I hate to know that I was part of that hurt.
10:34But I was just trying for you to have Abuela get to know Jem before, you know, so that it
10:42could become a part of her life before somebody came and threw it in and said to her, look, like,
10:47you know.
10:47Well, and she passed and I never got to tell her.
10:51She knows.
10:53You know what?
10:53I bet you she knows more than anybody.
10:55But I did it for everybody else, you know?
10:59You know?
11:00Like...
11:00Mama, she knows.
11:04But the way we handled things was very different than the way that your grandma would be able to...
11:11Funnily enough, I think she would have been better than all of y'all.
11:13I have friends that were... they got picked out of the house at 17, 18, in the Latino community.
11:21This is the treatment that we get from our parents because...
11:25Well, that's the thing.
11:26I guess they're not ready for this.
11:27For me, like, it was never a worry of like, oh, you know, you guys are gonna dip and disown
11:33me and kick me out of the house.
11:34That's why I also lost you for a bit there.
11:37And I lost you.
11:39I felt like I lost you.
11:41I'm like, where's my mom, bro?
11:42It sucked.
11:43But we couldn't even talk because we were both hurt.
11:46Our communication and the way that we were with each other...
11:49I wasn't authentic to you.
11:51You're Gloria Estefan.
11:52You're a gay icon.
11:55You are this shining beacon, right?
11:57Then I'm the miracle baby who now has started to sing, right?
12:02And all this crap.
12:03So I really didn't want to let you down.
12:05We weren't listening to each other's hurt, you know?
12:08Like, I was hurting you and you were hurting me and, like, that's all we were hearing.
12:12I felt like even you started treating me a little different.
12:15You think so?
12:16I just felt, I felt like, oh, now my family's, like, talking about this thing about me.
12:22We never even discussed it.
12:24Do you have any doubt that I accept and I love you?
12:28Now?
12:30Always.
12:31I had a doubt that you accepted me.
12:33You had a doubt.
12:33Okay.
12:34I had a doubt that everybody in the family...
12:35But you do know that I accept and love you.
12:37Yes, absolutely.
12:38And have all from the moment of your birth.
12:42You've always loved me and been, like, that force that, like, no matter what, I know I have my family.
12:49But that doesn't mean that we haven't hurt each other.
12:51Exactly.
12:51Well, and believe me, I'm sorry if I didn't have told you that.
12:55I know.
12:55I'm sorry if I didn't.
12:56And I'm sorry, too.
12:57Listening to you, I'm like, wow.
12:59How do we heal you?
13:01I have to heal myself.
13:02I think, I feel like now, whatever we're going to have to go through, it's all on the table.
13:07On the table.
13:08No pun intended.
13:09I feel this is not fair only because she's the one at the table.
13:12What happened with your father?
13:15Was it a totally different reaction?
13:17No, he went like this.
13:19Baby, baby, listen.
13:21I don't care.
13:22It doesn't matter.
13:23This country is about dreams.
13:24You love what you love.
13:25No, I'm kidding.
13:26The thing about dad is you know him.
13:28He doesn't want to hurt anybody's feelings.
13:30I think that he was trying to make sure that his women were both okay.
13:36I was happy that Emily was so honest.
13:39I think we need to realize that we're all the same.
13:41We like different things.
13:42I like rice and beans.
13:43You like hamburgers.
13:44That's different.
13:45But you know something?
13:46If you're good, that's my only concern.
13:48When they have a hard time, my kids, the only thing they need to feel is unconditional love.
13:53I want to bring somebody that's really special to join the table.
13:57She's our dear friend.
13:58She's our familia.
13:59And has known Emily her entire life.
14:0212-time Emmy winner, best-selling author, groundbreaking comedian, and lifelong family friend,
14:10Rosie O'Donnell is a trailblazer and fierce advocate for LGBTQ plus rights.
14:18Hi, everybody.
14:20How are you?
14:21We miss you.
14:22We miss you.
14:23We miss you on the island.
14:24Can I tell you that I've been listening to this whole conversation?
14:27And first of all, I'm so proud of all of you because this is a really hard thing for many,
14:33many families.
14:35One thing that I think is paramount today is forgiveness.
14:40It's forgiveness.
14:41That's what this is all about is, you know, I can understand your mom not knowing that you were questioning
14:49or in pain.
14:50I can understand.
14:51And I can so understand your pain.
14:53You know what I understand, too, about Abuela because I knew and saw and everyone could see the relationship Emily
15:00and she had.
15:01You know, she was the queen of the parties at your house.
15:04She was so loving and you were always sitting on her on her lap or next to her, cuddled all
15:11up.
15:11It was really a very beautiful relationship to witness.
15:16And I see why it pains you that you didn't get to tell her.
15:18However, when I told my older brother I was gay, he told me, don't tell daddy you can have a
15:23he can have a heart attack and it would kill him.
15:26It would kill him.
15:28It wasn't just Ro about her getting my mom sick because the day I said that and I regret that
15:34and I've apologized to you.
15:35And one second, one second, Chloe.
15:37Emily, do you forgive her for that?
15:39I absolutely forgive her.
15:40Absolutely.
15:41Fantastic.
15:42Yeah.
15:42We've forgiven each other.
15:44You know, we've been going through therapy and trying to get, you know, through it.
15:47But also in my mind was if Emily tells my mom and something happens to my mom, then she will
15:57forever be thinking guiltily that she might have caused that situation.
16:04And I didn't want any kind of correlation between M sexuality and my mom getting sick.
16:11And I know that I I said the wrong thing, but that's where I was coming from with that.
16:17It wasn't by any means that I thought that, oh, well, I would be ashamed of you because I didn't
16:21think that.
16:22And this is a beautiful, beautiful conversation where, you know, the hard stuff is discussed.
16:28I mean, why people didn't discuss it with each other when you were little?
16:32Well, you were little and your mom would ask you when you would say no.
16:35Well, you would say no securely.
16:37Exactly.
16:37No, I'm not gay.
16:38And you know what?
16:39When I was younger, I might have done that, too.
16:42I remember going to the St. Patrick's Day parade.
16:45I must have been 12 and I had overalls on and a baseball cap.
16:50And these women from the LGBT community came over and said, would you like to come to our meeting?
16:55And handed me in front of all my siblings and everything this ticket to the gay parade.
17:02I was like, why are they giving it to me?
17:04It was like it was on fire.
17:05I didn't want to touch it.
17:06You know, it wasn't until I got a little bit older that I understood, oh, this is what's happening to
17:13me.
17:13Then I got my license and I drove around in the car saying, I am gay.
17:17I am a gay person.
17:20And I know how tough that was for you, Ro, because I remember you were talking to me about some
17:25guy that you had just dated.
17:27That's right.
17:27Emily, right before I met your mom, I dated a man for two years, a lovely, lovely, warm man.
17:33But I would find myself staying in the bathroom, popping pimples, doing anything not to get to bed, even though
17:41when I got to bed, we had a wonderful.
17:43It wasn't the sex that was the problem, necessarily.
17:47It was the emotional link.
17:48Yes.
17:49The intimacy.
17:50The intimacy.
17:52Yes.
17:52You know, Emily, nobody knows how to be in a non societally supported relationship on their own.
17:59You learn it as you go.
18:01You get a community of friends.
18:03You start to feel OK about who you are.
18:05How people label you is their issue, not yours.
18:08Yep.
18:09I still don't want to say, oh, I'm gay.
18:11I'm a human.
18:12I love this woman.
18:13If you want to take a picture of it and they're like, Emily Estefan Gay, I'd be like, if that's
18:17what you want to call me, that's fine.
18:18I understand.
18:18But I'm Emily.
18:19You know, like, I love women.
18:21I can understand, Em, you not wanting to take the label of gay.
18:24For me, it was lesbian.
18:26For a long time, it took me to say I was a lesbian.
18:29Like, it sounded like a course you would take in college.
18:32Yes.
18:32And I know, Em, that when you were little, I thought you were a little tomboy and I thought, oh,
18:37there's a chance that she would be gay.
18:39But I was so proud of you.
18:40I was so proud of you just as a human being.
18:43And I'm proud of you as this young gay woman, even though the title doesn't necessarily have to fit you
18:49if you don't want it.
18:50You know, Em, here's the thing.
18:52With people asking you if you were gay since you were little and your mother being a gay icon, like,
18:58you would assume your mother's going to welcome you with open arms.
19:02And Gloria would assume, well, she would have told me by now.
19:05Exactly.
19:06Right.
19:07So you're both stuck in your corners a little bit.
19:10Exactly.
19:10When I came out on TV after 9-11, it was like a blip.
19:15Nobody even, but I, like you, Emily, was surprised that people thought I was not gay.
19:19Didn't you just blurt it out?
19:21I did.
19:22I went to a comedy club and I was doing standup and I'm like, I'm gay.
19:25Listen, 9-11 happened.
19:27I'm gay.
19:28I'm telling you all I'm gay.
19:29In case the buildings blow up again, I'm so, so gay.
19:33Oh, my God.
19:34You know?
19:34Exactly.
19:35I remember Ellen getting in trouble so bad she lost everything.
19:39It's scary.
19:40I can understand Gloria wanting to protect Emily from that.
19:43And I didn't have a mother, but my publicist, she was like a surrogate mother to me.
19:47She would say to me, don't sit next to Kelly so that nobody could tell that we were together in
19:53a couple.
19:53And every time she did it, it hurt my feelings.
19:56And every time I told her and she said, you're paying me to protect you when I'm protecting you.
20:00The LGBTQ community has gone through hell.
20:04When I started studying psychology in 1975, my first course was sexual deviations.
20:11And only two years before had homosexuality been removed from the APA, the American Psychiatry Association.
20:20And the only reason that that got taken out was because of the gay activists that made it a point
20:29to show up after the Stonewall riot.
20:31Freud was the one that said that we all have the possibility to be bisexual.
20:36But for God's sake, dolphins are bisexual.
20:39Dolphins.
20:39Everybody loves dolphins.
20:41Dolphins.
20:42Dolphins.
20:43Dolphins will live in male and separate female things, getting together once a year in a mating ball that I'm
20:51sure you've seen.
20:51You mean an orgy?
20:53No, pretty much.
20:53Pretty much.
20:54I've seen them.
20:55Red table soccer, Stephans.
20:57Animal sex.
20:58It is part of nature.
20:59It's a spectrum like everything else.
21:01Exactly.
21:01You know why this show is so important?
21:03Because you three amazing Latino women are talking about something that in your culture is very difficult to talk about.
21:11You know, I think it might be a good moment to bring in someone from the Latino community to join
21:16us here.
21:17A badass movie star.
21:18She's openly bisexual.
21:20I think I had a childhood crush on her, too.
21:22Okay.
21:22Oh, you had a childhood crush.
21:23And we're honored that she's afraid to talk about her personal journey.
21:27Michelle Rodriguez is world famous for the fearless females she plays in the Fast and the Furious and Resident Evil
21:35franchises.
21:36And for years, rumors about her sexuality made the headlines.
21:39You're right.
21:40You're right.
21:41Until she ended the speculation herself.
21:44Bye.
21:45Yeah.
21:46I fall under the B category.
21:47All right.
21:48Michelle.
21:49Hi, Michelle.
21:51Hi, Rosie.
21:52Oh, my God.
21:53Look at this.
21:54This is so beautiful.
21:56This is amazing.
21:56And I love all the generations because that's such an important facet of this conversation.
22:02We're multicultural, multisexual, and we welcome you, Michelle.
22:09Welcome.
22:09Michelle, how did you come out?
22:11How did you?
22:11Ah, somebody just asked me.
22:13And I told them.
22:14I like boys.
22:15I like girls.
22:16I like both.
22:17I've always kind of gone my own little way.
22:20I'm the rogue girl in Hollywood who's just kind of made my own path and not really cared what people
22:25think too much.
22:26Yeah, I was in the news because I was a public figure or whatever.
22:29How did your parents react?
22:31Did they know?
22:32Did you tell them first?
22:33Were they supportive?
22:35Well, my family is Jehovah Witness.
22:38Oh.
22:39That's a whole other table.
22:42I mean, birthdays and celebrating Halloween are like evil.
22:46I didn't get to watch Disney movies until I was in my teens.
22:49Oh.
22:50Wow.
22:50Like, because of all the witchcraft.
22:53Like.
22:54Wow.
22:55Wow.
22:55So that's a whole other ball of waxing.
22:57Wow, Michelle.
22:58Are you close to your family?
23:00You know, my family, I think at the end of the day, they set aside the differences.
23:05But as far as spending lots of time with that side of the family, it just won't.
23:09No.
23:09I grew up knowing that you're in this alone.
23:13Your mom gives birth to you and your family takes care of you.
23:16But in a sense, you have to make your own in the world.
23:21And for me, to have other people decide what that looks like.
23:26It was, I was like, I could never, I could never live that life.
23:30I understand.
23:31You said something which is true.
23:33Like, at the end of the day, you only have yourself.
23:35And when I lost my grandma, I literally stopped eating and went into a depression.
23:40And like, I get it because that's grief, but you can't depend on other people to be okay.
23:47You have to depend on yourself, I feel.
23:49The best things in life you learned were you going through the worst times of your life.
23:54But I think it's very, very important for people to kind of sit in those uncomfortable places in yourself.
24:01Yep.
24:01And figure out why you're uncomfortable with yourself.
24:04Yep.
24:05It was tough to learn that lesson.
24:07And let me tell you, I didn't learn it.
24:09I learned it late because I partied a lot.
24:12Your son knows, naive knows.
24:15Oh, hey.
24:17He said hello, by the way.
24:19He said to say hello to you.
24:20Uh-oh.
24:21I'm getting under the table.
24:22He won't get within like eight feet of the red table.
24:25Yeah.
24:26He is staying.
24:27He goes, no, no, you guys go ahead.
24:28I'm sending you support.
24:30You keep trying.
24:32But listen, you two are very iconic.
24:34You're from, you know, different generations.
24:37I'd love to hear any advice that you would have for anyone that's afraid to come out.
24:42Some parents might not necessarily understand what it is to live in this contemporary world.
24:47They don't know what it's like at school.
24:49They don't know what it's like online.
24:50And so when you approach a situation where you know that your parents or your friends have a world view
24:57that's not necessarily yours, they think that gay is bad.
25:02Those are limiting world views.
25:05Anything that cancels people is limiting.
25:08Absolutely.
25:09To look at everybody with empathy I think is very important because then you don't hate the fact that they
25:15think differently than you.
25:16You accept it and you're compassionate because if you take it to heart and you take everything like it's the
25:23end all be all, that's when you get into trouble.
25:26That's when you start hurting.
25:28Exactly.
25:28There's all these people that think differently than me.
25:31Where do I belong?
25:32Who am I in this world?
25:35Could I just end it now?
25:36There's a lot of people like this.
25:37Yes.
25:38Yeah, that's what we're trying to prevent.
25:39And when we think that we know it all and that our position is the only position.
25:44There's nowhere to go.
25:45That's a really, I think that gets us in a lot of trouble.
25:48What about you, Ro?
25:49You could learn from everything.
25:50I would just tell everybody first and foremost to make sure that they're safe with who they tell.
25:54Because, you know, I get letters a lot from kids in their early teens or 20s and saying that, you
26:00know, their parents kicked them out, like Lily said.
26:03And they have lost everything by telling people.
26:06So, you know, we don't know what their situation is.
26:08I always say find one person that you trust and tell that one person.
26:14And, you know, that should be, in my opinion, someone older, an adult in your life, not a friend who's
26:21going to go spread it around the school.
26:23Find someone that you really trust and just tell them that I think that this is going on for me
26:28and I'm afraid or I'm however you feel it.
26:31You know, because it is really life threatening for some people.
26:35And the suicide rates are so high for gay and lesbian youth.
26:38We have to do all we can.
26:40And shows like this and people like Michelle and Em who are living, you know, in a non-conventional way.
26:48Although I think it's kind of conventional because of the spectrum, you know.
26:51But the way we get labeled, you never hear anyone labeled, here's the heterosexual.
26:55Yeah, I was about to say you don't come out straight.
26:58You don't come out straight.
26:59I hope for the day when that is a non-issue for all of us.
27:03Yeah.
27:03And as a parent, all I can say to anybody that's watching out there, we love our children.
27:09We are all unique human beings with our own reasons for coming to this earth.
27:16And yes, this table, the reason that any of us accepted to do this show is to try to be
27:23of help or of comfort.
27:25And heal each other.
27:26Oh, yes.
27:27To heal each other and, you know, to try to be that for other people that perhaps are having a
27:31really tough time.
27:33But thank you so much for showing up and being a part of this.
27:36We love you so much.
27:37And we thank you.
27:38Very, very.
27:39We thank you, too.
27:40Thank you so much.
27:41I love you guys.
27:42We love you.
27:43Bye, Mish.
27:43Bye, guys.
27:44Bye.
27:45I love you guys.
27:45I love you.
27:46I love you.
27:49On the next Red Table Talk, the Estefans.
27:53Millions of people are suffering in silence.
27:55We're in a worldwide mental health crisis.
27:59I actually suffer from extreme anxiety.
28:03You are not alone.
28:04Then I start freaking out because then the bad thoughts come in.
28:08Lele Pons, debilitating disorder.
28:10I'm a loser.
28:11This is so embarrassing.
28:12It's over.
28:13Let's just kill ourselves.
28:14Actress Carla Souza's traumatic breakdown.
28:17I would see my friends' faces turn into rats and they were going to eat me.
28:22Anyone can be affected.
28:24I remember thinking, what if I hang myself and I had even picked out the tree that I might do
28:29it on?
28:30Maybe you talk about it, you can help someone.
28:32Exactly.
28:42Listen, I want to say something.
28:44I know, obviously there was miscommunications everywhere and we've worked on it and we're still working on it.
28:49Still.
28:49For a parent and a daughter and a cousin and well, you know, we've all been through so much and
28:57this is how we got to do it.
28:58Because there's no reason to waste time.
29:00Life is short and we learned a lot and for next time when I come out as an alien.
29:04You came out of my belly as an alien, so.
29:07Definitely.
29:09Let's talk about it.
