Washington National Guard assists crews battling wildfires
Footage released by the U.S. military on Wednesday (August 5) showed Washington National Guard aircraft supporting wildfire suppression efforts in eastern Washington. Filmed on Tuesday (August 4), footage showed large plumes of smoke as a CH-47 Chinook and a UH-60 Black Hawk performed firefighting operations on the Modrite and Bradeen Hill fires, according to the military. A cooling trend and calmer winds on Monday (August 3) and Tuesday (August 4) have helped ground crews and firefighting aircraft to make significant strides in curtailing devastating blazes in the state, particularly in the Spokane area, where wildfires were designated the top U.S. firefighting priority. The U.S. National Interagency Fire Center has tallied 45,184 wildfires year to date nationwide, the most for this time of the year in at least a decade, with nearly 5.5 million acres charred, the most from January 1 through August 5 since 2022.
