Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse sharply criticized the Trump administration and Republican lawmakers over Social Security, demanding they present a concrete plan instead of attacking Democratic proposals. Speaking during a Senate hearing, Whitehouse argued that Democrats have repeatedly introduced legislation to strengthen Social Security and Medicare, including plans he said would keep both programs solvent for decades. He challenged Republicans to either offer an alternative or vote on existing proposals, insisting the issue is no longer about policy options but about political will and accountability.

00:01Well this hearing is not about Medicaid but let me just point out there is in
00:05fact around a trillion dollars in cuts that are coming to Medicaid and we know
00:09that is a fact because fact-based people out in the real world like hospitals
00:14and nursing homes and doctors practices are already planning their finances for
00:20the crash in revenue that's going to come from the Republican built red tape
00:26bomb that's going to go off in Medicaid to basically drive people off it because
00:32they won't be able to keep up with the red tape requirement so that's where we
00:36are on that I can't let that go unrebutted with respect to Social Security
00:41well the trust funds going to be exhausted a year earlier than predicted a lot of
00:47that's thanks to the billionaire's bill that the Republicans jammed through it
00:52hits in 2032 just six years from now where Democrats we've been pretty out
00:57there we've got bills you can look at them kick the tires take your pot shots we
01:03have legislation that will make Social Security solvent for as far as the
01:08actual eye can see without cutting benefits where's the Republican
01:12proposal where is it it doesn't exist they want to go to a back room and get
01:19wheeler deals done that allow for benefit cuts and things like that that they
01:23don't want to own so they don't want to put it out there that's where we are the
01:27first thing that we should see is if Republicans want to solve Social
01:30Security put your plan on the table why hide it what do you want to do put it
01:35out there we've done that so while we're at it on Social Security not only is it
01:41running out of trust fund but we've also got Social Security Administration
01:48internal collapse thanks to Musk and his wretched little doggy boys going in and
01:54getting lots of people fired from their jobs we've got reporting that his little
02:00doggy boys took data planning to take Social Security private data and offer it to
02:06private employers so there are a lot of problems with Social Security but the
02:12big one is how do we make sure that benefits don't get cut in 2032 and we've
02:17got a plan we're not ashamed of our plan we put it out there it's actually not
02:21complicated you actually make people who are making huge amounts of income pay
02:26the same Social Security taxes as everybody else all the way up the rest of
02:30their income and if they're dodging their income because they're really fancy and
02:35they've been able to park it through various types of corporate obscuring go
02:42hunt that down and actually make sure that they've got to pay Social Security on
02:47that as well you shouldn't be able to hide your income through a corporate
02:50device and dodge Social Security that way it's still income you're still spending
02:54it that's still you know the way your your world works so we can do that remember
03:00the day when Biden at the State of the Union said no benefit cuts to Social
03:07Security and the whole room stood up standing oh unanimous bipartisan applause
03:13well if we're still there the math is really simple if you don't cut benefits
03:20you got to add revenue where would you want to go for revenue why not to the
03:25highest income people who aren't paying into it now beyond what an ordinary nurse
03:31or plumber would it doesn't make any sense why would you reward people for
03:37dodging their income through corporate screens so that they don't have to count
03:42it as payroll they bring it in other ways it just this shouldn't be hard this
03:49shouldn't be hard and the first step frankly is going to be our Republican
03:56colleagues put up or shut up give us a plan if you don't have one let's have a
04:03vote on ours and you can vote it down and own that but we have been very clear
04:08multiple Democrat senators have put out plan after plan that will make Social
04:12Security solvent mine actually make Social Security and Medicare solvent for 75
04:17years as far as the actuarial I can see according to both the Social Security
04:22and the CMS actuaries so we can do this it's lying there right in front of us is
04:28just a question of political will and if some people not wanting to own what they
04:33want to do to Social Security that's our problem thank you chairman
