00:10However, experts say that new measurements made with the James Webb Space Telescope could finally solve a long-standing issue
00:17with our understanding.
00:18The Hubble constant is the accelerated rate at which the universe is getting bigger, based on a couple of distant
00:23objects and metrics that serve as cosmic rulers.
00:25The problem is there is a range of error between these sets, so astronomers have now focused on one of
00:30them, in particular on a group of stars known as the red giant branch.
00:35Red giants end up at a standard size and brightness as they age, meaning they could be the most accurate
00:40objects with which to use as measuring devices.
00:42So they pointed the James Webb Telescope to precisely measure the distance between several red giant branches of stars, as
00:48well as some others.
00:49This allowed them to cross-check for errors, finding that there was a pretty solid agreement amongst all models measured
00:55this way.
00:55With the researchers finding once, and possibly for all, that the universe is getting bigger at around 43 miles per
01:01second per megaparsec.
