The BMW iFACTORY concept describes the BMW Group's strategic vision for the future of its global production network – characterized by efficiency, sustainability, and digitalization. At both BMW Group plants in Spartanburg and Woodruff, the guiding principles of the BMW iFACTORY are already a reality.
Intelligent automation, seamless data integration, and virtual planning form a highly networked production system – with highly skilled employees at its core. Processes at both plants have already been optimized using digital twins of production, long before the first component reaches the assembly line. Virtual 3D simulations enable smooth implementation, reduce complexity, and improve workflows and ergonomics for employees.
Artificial intelligence is also firmly integrated into production at both plants. AI-supported applications, including self-correcting robotics and image-processing-based quality control, help to ensure consistently high standards in a dynamic manufacturing environment. AIQX (Artificial Intelligence Quality Next), an IT platform developed internally by the BMW Group, is used at both locations. It uses sensors and camera systems along the production line to automate quality processes. Artificial intelligence analyzes the data and provides real-time feedback to employees on the line.
