The TOX5 Lite brings Ugoos-grade hardware and firmware to a budget-friendly Android TV box powered by the Amlogic S905X5M chipset.

In this review I unbox and test the TOX 5 Lite's I/O, dual launcher setup (Quickstep and TOX launcher), Android 14 firmware features, Widevine and HDCP status, Wi-Fi and gigabit LAN speeds, root access via Magisk, HDR10/HLG/AV1 playback, full Dolby and DTS surround sound passthrough, Android gaming performance, and benchmark scores including Geekbench 5 and AnTuTu.

At around $69, see where the TOX5 Lite ranks on my TV box comparison chart and whether it's the right pick for your budget.

00:02What's up viewers and welcome back to the channel. Today I'm happy to receive the latest release by
00:09TOX. And if you don't know this brand, the abbreviation stands for trust on X. And it's
00:16the only brand that shares the same hardware and firmware features used in the Ugoose models.
00:22So you know this brand will be high on my list of recommended boxes.
00:25So in today's video we have the release of the latest model called the TOX5 Lite running on the
00:33Amlogic S905X5M chipset. And it's the Lite version hardware configuration.
00:40So it's affordably priced to deliver high performance at a low price.
00:44So don't go anywhere, my full review is up next.
01:01Welcome back.
01:03So in this Lite version, you get the latest TOX5 Lite model itself.
01:09You get an infrared remote control.
01:12One HDMI cable.
01:15A 5V 2A 12W DC power supply.
01:20And a user manual.
01:23Its design consists of a well-ventilated plastic outer shell with ventilation holes to its base top and sides.
01:31For IO, it comes with a 2.1 HDMI port, a gigabit LAN port, a 5V 2A DC USB Type
01:41-C power delivery port,
01:43One USB 3.0, another USB 2.0, and a micro SD card slot.
01:50Both USB ports are colored black, so the claim of one of them being USB 3.0 I cannot confirm.
01:58At the front you get an LED power light, and an LED display.
02:03And to its base has four rubber feet, a reset button, and ventilation holes.
02:10The first boot up process of this new model features a simple TOX animation splash screen,
02:16no first startup wizard, followed by the selection of two launchers.
02:20The quick step launcher which we are all familiar with as it has all the features of the mobile
02:25version of Android, and it's suited to be navigated with a mouse cursor.
02:31And you have the TOX launcher, which is a launcher designed to be navigated with a direction pad
02:37and an OK button. For this review I'll be using the quick step launcher, and an air mouse pointer.
02:45The included infrared remote can be used to navigate this launcher, but it's not well suited as it does
02:51not feature Bluetooth, and the mouse feature on the remote is not an air mouse movement,
02:56but moved with each click of the direction pad. So for easy navigation I'll be using an alternative air mouse.
03:04For those of you new to Android boxes, the operating system installed on this box is the mobile version
03:11of Android. And with this quick step launcher you get mobile navigation features such as long click menu
03:18popups, drag and drop feature, a navigation bar with recent apps feature, and a full status bar with system
03:26controls. With the recent apps feature you also get split screen display.
03:47Another feature of the quick step launcher is the ability to change the launcher background
03:53wallpaper. You also have the ability to add widget those that are available by the launcher.
04:00loved the laptop app because, yeah, the analogy is your mouse!
04:46If you would like to customize even further you can install an alternative launcher from
04:52the Google Play Store or custom APK and you can also upgrade from an image wallpaper to a live
04:59wallpaper.
05:06So its basic system information shows that its operating system is Android 14.
05:12This is its current firmware build information and you have access to developer options.
05:21So for unique firmware features the box features adaptive HDR display.
05:26Screen orientation to portrait mode reverse portrait and reverse landscape.
05:32Auto frame rate switching.
05:35Up to 12 bit color depth.
05:39Hardware monitor feature.
05:42Max CPU performance mode.
05:46Mouse pointer options.
05:48And you have Sambra server and client server feature.
05:54I now turn to my advanced TV box specs app to get a deeper insight into its hardware and firmware
06:00features.
06:00You can get this app for free using the link in the description.
06:04So under summary, it shows that the manufacturer is TOX.
06:10Its operating system is the mobile version of Android 14.
06:14It has root access via the Magix application.
06:17It has Google Widevine level 3 with no HDCP protection.
06:22It's CPU is the latest Amlogic S905X5M, a quad core cortex A55 processor clocked at 2.5 gigahertz
06:32configured in 32 bit mode.
06:35This is the light version, so it only has 2 gigabytes of RAM, 32 gigabytes of internal storage,
06:41and it has client and Sambra server feature.
06:45It's GPU is the Mali G310, and the app detects it as a single core graphics processor with open GLES
06:54version 3.2, Vulkan 1.3, up to 4K 60Hz display with HDMI CC feature.
07:02It's Wi-Fi adapter is not Wi-Fi 6 but Wi-Fi 5AC that provides dual band 2.4 gigahertz
07:10plus 5G Wi-Fi.
07:12It's currently connected to my Wi-Fi 6 router, and it works just fine.
07:18Its Ethernet LAN port is a gigabyte LAN port.
07:21Its Bluetooth version cannot be detected.
07:25For video it supports HDR10, HLG, AV1, AISR, and AIPQ.
07:32However there are no features in the firmware to access its video upscaling capabilities.
07:37It also shows here that it does not support HDR10 plus or Dolby vision.
07:44For surround audio you get all surround sound audio output formats via audio passthrough.
07:50And it has an idle operating temperature of around 54 degrees Celsius, 129 Fahrenheit.
07:59Moving on to streaming.
08:02If you install the mobile version of YouTube, you get up to 4K 2160p at 60Hz with HDR display quality.
08:10You also get picture in picture mini window feature.
08:32For streaming movies and TV shows from premium movie streaming services such as Netflix,
08:38Prime Video, Disney Plus,
08:39and Max.
08:40You are restricted to basic 720p resolution due to the lack of Google Widevine level 1 certification
08:48and HDCP protection.
08:50Here in my prime video account under details, it shows the supported display and audio formats,
08:57but they don't trigger on my TV.
09:00For playing self-hosted videos, you get decoders such as HDR10, AV1, and HLG.
09:08You don't get HDR10 plus or Dolby vision.
09:12One of the challenges in playing self-hosted videos is finding the right media player that
09:18can play all the formats and you can also access your home server network.
09:22Hence the reason I created my own advanced media player called TV box player.
09:27I have now updated it to version 17 to now display the video buy rate in the OSD.
09:33You can download my player for free in the description.
09:37So this is HDR10.
09:51This is the AV1 format.
10:03This is Dolby vision with stereo audio.
10:07But seeing that the box does not support Dolby vision,
10:11the media player falls back to HLG.
10:17This is Dolby vision with Dolby Atmos.
10:20And the media player falls back to HLG with Dolby Atmos that is supported.
10:30This is HDR10 plus that falls back to HDR10.
10:39This is official HLG.
10:52And this is DVD rip format M2TS with Dolby TrueHD.
10:59Please note your box must have these hardware decoders for the media player to successfully play them.
11:05So when you purchase this TOX5 Lite version you can successfully play videos with all the required decoders.
11:13For surround sound enthusiast, the TOX5 Lite can play all surround sound audio Dolby and DTS formats.
11:23So this is Dolby Atmos.
11:29This is Dolby Atmos.
11:32The world's first object-based cinematic audio.
11:37With powerful moving audio that transcends from channels
11:42to moving around you with 10 point accuracy.
11:47This is Dolby Digital Plus.
11:53Come on you guys, let's go.
11:56Who captures the full extent.
11:58Do you want to know my secret?
12:00You get DTS HD Master Audio.
12:16You get Dolby Surround.
12:18Do you want to know my secret?
12:27Dolby TrueHD?
12:35This is the left channel.
12:41Next, we have the center channel.
12:47Over here is the right channel.
12:51DTS X.
13:19And M2TS DVD RIP format.
13:22This one has DTS X.
13:36For route access, out of the box the firmware is not routed as shown here by the route checker app.
13:43And to gain route access, you simply head over to the settings area on the device preferences
13:48and open the super user tab.
13:51There you will see the magic switch.
13:53You enable it, and it will require you to restart the box.
13:57Once restarted you will see the magics application in the app section.
14:01You open it, and it will ask you to grant one more additional permission.
14:06And once you click OK, it will automatically restart the box once again.
14:16Once restarted, you can open the route checker app again
14:19to grant super user permission to confirm that you now have route access.
14:32For Android gaming, this is the lite version that only has 2GB of RAM configured in 32-bit mode.
14:40However, surprisingly its gaming performance is really good.
14:45Here I'm playing Shadowgun legends on the highest ultra graphics settings and it handles pretty well.
15:11Now a look at some benchmarks and where it ranks on my chart.
15:14First, its RAM and internal storage.
15:18It has a RAM copy speed of 4,472 megabytes per second.
15:24Its internal storage has a read speed of 238 megabytes per second.
15:30And a write speed of 99.
15:34In benchmarking its Wi-Fi and Ethernet LAN speed.
15:38Just for clarification, my internet service provider upgraded the speed of my internet
15:44to 480 to 500 megabits per second approximately.
15:50And the Wi-Fi speed test revealed that on the 5 GHz band it achieved the maximum speed of my
15:56network.
15:57Its LAN port is a gigabit LAN port also achieving the maximum speed of my network.
16:02However, its 2.4 GHz band achieved around 75 megabits per second.
16:10In benchmarking the Amlogic S905X5M CPU single core and multi-core performance,
16:17the Geekbench 5 CPU benchmark produced a score of 196 single core and 662 multi-core.
16:26In benchmarking its GPU graphics rendering performance due to its 2 GB of RAM it could
16:33not complete the 3DMark wild life test because it simply ran out of memory during the test.
16:38So I had to resort to the slingshot extreme test.
16:42And it produced a score of 1055 with an average FPS of 3.15.
16:49And in the comprehensive Antutu benchmark, it received a score of 167536.
16:58So these are the benchmarks, let's now see where it ranks on my chart.
17:03So I've updated the scores on my chart. And the new TOX5 Lite at the time of making this video
17:09ranks at position 23 with a 3 out of 5 star rating. So to view all of its features you
17:16simply click
17:16anywhere on the listing and the details will pop up. You also have a purchase link to the lowest price
17:22right here. So to view this chart, to compare all of its features to other boxes in this list,
17:28I placed a link in the description below. So in summary, these are its pros and cons.
17:34And as mentioned, this is the Lite version without Dolby vision.
17:38But with that said, even with its limited 2GB of RAM, I found its performance to be pretty
17:44impressive for the price of only around $69. So if you are looking for a cheap Android box
17:51with all the bells and whistles, then the TOX5 Lite will surely fit your budget.
17:56So that brings to an end this review. So if you are interested in this affordable yet feature rich
18:03Android TV box, you can find a purchase link in the description section below this video.
18:08Please note, links in the description are affiliate links which means when you use them to purchase,
18:14you support the channel directly with a small percentage of your purchase.
18:18So thanks in advance for using my links and your continued support.
18:22So in closing, give the video the thumbs up if you would like to support the channel and the work
18:27that I do on these boxes. If you are just tuning in for the first time, then I urge you
18:32to click the
