00:00How did Vietnam's territory change over time?
00:02Vietnamese people were originally under Chinese rule,
00:05and in 938 they managed to gain independence after nearly 1,000 years of Chinese occupation.
00:12Unlike China, they managed to repel the Mongol invasions in the 13th century.
00:17In 1471 they defeated Champa, expanding further south.
00:21In the 18th century they pushed into the Khmer Empire,
00:24taking more of their coast because, I guess that's their thing.
00:27Then Vietnam split into three different kingdoms.
00:30Wait, you only see two? There it is.
00:32Those are the Nguyen Lords, and somehow they managed to reunite all of Vietnam and even expanded a bit.
00:38However, they then got colonized by France and became French Indochina.
00:43During World War II they were occupied by Japan,
00:46and after the war the Vietnamese started an uprising, French Indochina collapsed,
00:51and Vietnam was split into the Communist North and the French-backed South.
00:55After years of war, the North ended up winning, forming the Vietnam we know today.
