Tampa Bay Bucs star Vita Vea has requested a trade, could the Lions pull off the move?
Transcript
00:04well good morning and welcome to the karsh and anderson program gator out today we have got a
00:09ton to discuss including uh the detroit tigers defining themselves and making the path much
00:18clearer as to what should happen we will get to that coming up here on karsh and anderson on 971
00:24but uh we got a twitter question out there we're looking for your predictions of what will happen
00:30which is different than what would you do what would you do uh as apparently uh i know a lot
00:38of
00:38people have their opinions not apparently i know a lot of people have their opinions but that's
00:44different than what you think the detroit tigers would do so we want your predictions if you want
00:49to and we'll get to that a little bit later on because we've had people that have been in the
00:55trade-in camp for over a year um we've had people that have been in the you got to go
00:59for a camp
01:01it's getting much much harder to be in that camp it the the tigers they say all the right things
01:08and
01:08they they talk about being a better baseball team than the record indicates but then they go out and
01:14they they they do things that just they that doesn't doesn't support it it just doesn't support
01:19it and so it's becoming much much more clear to me and it's also why i wanted to wait to
01:24the trade
01:24deadline and we talked about yesterday needing a miracle and the miracle wasn't going to happen and
01:30the even now you know the the idea that they could even make this thing close by the deadline i
01:35don't
01:36believe and so uh bottom line um now the question is to what depth should they go and what should
01:43they be looking for in return and i put a lot of effort into coming up with reasonable returns
01:47and i and my when i use the term reasonable returns it's it's what do i think a team would
01:53actually give up because you put yourself on their side and you go well sure you can give up this
02:02prospect that's not contributing now but the contract of the player ahead of him is up in two years
02:08are up after next year and this guy's 22 years old and he's the apparent and the player he he's
02:14the
02:14next guy to replace him at that position but whatever i mean you know we do our best to try
02:18and be as
02:19reasonable as possible but uh if you want to get your predictions in as to what the tigers will do
02:24by next monday or next monday uh 248-539-9797 today is a big day however in that the veterans
02:34report for
02:35detroit the detroit lions and this is usually huge news in detroit we've been very baseball centric of
02:43late and understandably so the city loves its detroit tiger team and this tiger team has been a
02:49frustrating one a tantalizingly frustrating team they make you think that they might actually be good
02:55and coming back from the dead and they've they've dominated the storylines this summer and let's face
03:01that we've got one of the biggest stories in baseball going on with the scoobal saga but training
03:05camp uh is is opening tomorrow and well they're reporting today and then practice starts tomorrow
03:13i expect we'll hear from dan campbell ken can you uh confirm if we hear from dan campbell uh tomorrow
03:17morning uh hopefully we will before camp even starts but there's a number of storylines set to play
03:24themselves out now one of them started with out of town news yesterday the vita vea the all pro defensive
03:32tackle from tampa wants a new contract and wants out of tampa and immediately you get into what we do
03:42here is how does that impact us what is that any way that this impacts detroit so at the very
03:51least
03:52it's a quality player from a team in the nfc that might be leaving said team and so you would
04:03think
04:03i mean they're gonna if they're gonna trade him they're gonna get something in return are they
04:07gonna get draft compensation what what are they gonna get it impacts tampa's viability in the nfc
04:16let's start there but where does he end up like if he ends up with the rams holy crap now
04:24there's cap
04:25considerations and maybe more importantly there's future cap considerations the the the obvious way
04:34it could impact detroit is can detroit afford him and if everything depended on the detroit lions
04:41finding a path to vita vea being on their roster this year they could get there they would have to
04:50cut some people create some cap space but not a ton of cap space but it would soak up pretty
04:56much all
04:56the remaining cap space there are teams with cap space and there's a report out there i don't know
05:04how credible it is but he wants to be on the west coast with the raiders the niners have cap
05:10space
05:11the chargers have cap space the rams have just about the same amount of cap space as the lions
05:20and the raiders have less cap space than the rams so you know if those reports are true
05:29and then the question is not just the cap space this year but is he only going to get traded
05:34to
05:34a team that's willing to sign a 31 year old two-time all pro defensive tackle to an extension
05:40could it happen in detroit the only way it could likely happen in detroit is if they were to get
05:48to
05:48agree if he's just wants out of tampa and doesn't necessarily want a new contract
05:56then i think detroit might make sense but even then they'd have to create cap space and it feels
06:02like an out of character move for brad holmes it's kind of slow and steady and i think would make
06:09the
06:09the i don't think he's opposed i don't think he should be let me say that he should not be
06:13opposed
06:14to making a big move at all but and and i hope and suspect that he isn't but it almost
06:23has to be the
06:23perfect move and i feel like this would take too much cap juggling and would cost him too much down
06:28the road if they had to sign him to a long-term contract i always talk about legitimate accessibility
06:33to a player is there legitimate accessibility which is all things considered do you have first
06:41you have what tampa would take to trade him second would he would he come here to play on a
06:47one-year
06:47contract third if it took more than that do the lions have the ability to sign him to a contract
06:53beyond this uh fourth is creating the cap space this year like all of those things under
06:59consideration i really don't feel like there's a legitimate accessibility to him in detroit
07:03kang am i wrong there's no real legitimate accessibility to vita vea pro bowl defensive
07:08tackle who wants out of tampa really no legitimate accessibility to him in detroit i don't think there
07:13is um i mean i'm always for adding really good players and obviously vita vea is a really good player
07:18uh but the reason he's requesting a trade is because the contract issues and like you said i
07:23don't think there's a really realistic way for the lions to get there and he's 31 years old i don't
07:29they have a lee mcneil i don't even think he's one of the bigger needs that the lions would have
07:34so i
07:34think there's a lot of science for me personally pointing that i would stay away and the accessibility
07:38is probably the top one and the second one is i don't think they need them but but it does
07:44affect
07:44the lines is where does he go i mean i know you mentioned that west coast may be something that's
07:48been put out there but i think he just wants the money it's clearly tampa and him they didn't come
07:54to an agreement so he requested a trade but that day yesterday earlier in the morning he was on with
07:57kay adams and she asked him about the contract situation he says we'll see i don't know we're still
08:02working through it hours later you know it's reported that he's requested a trade things went bad
08:06of course or didn't go where he wanted him to go and in the end he is 31 years old
08:11like i said
08:12and he wants his last big payday and that could be the west coast or it could be the east
08:17coast but
08:17he wants to get paid i don't think the lions could get there and if you look at the lions
08:21depth chart
08:21okay they have invested high draft capital into the defensive tackle spot they've invested
08:31a lot of money in a lean mcneil into the defensive tackle spot they've got sort of wild card candidates
08:39behind those two and the high draft capital was tyleek williams of course the first round pick
08:44out of ohio state last year and there is some tyleek williams news i want to get to but between
08:50williams mcneil wild cards behind him look would vita vea being on the roster
08:57help on third and one more than tyleek williams will
09:01in you know a game in september against green bay yes yes yes he would but you got to get
09:09down to
09:09what is realistic under the cap with the roster construction and and are you essentially
09:16cutting off a path to address greater needs when you have an opportunity by bringing in vita vea and
09:25and you probably are so as as we talk it through probably not legitimate accessibility to the
09:31player at at this point but there is other lions news i want to get to 248-539-9797 and
09:38we got a
09:39question for you on this eve of the first practice lions camp starts tomorrow
09:48just about every single year somebody exceeds expectations somebody steps up somebody emerges as
10:03better than people thought who do you think that somebody is and they'll start to show it tomorrow
10:14248-539-9797 we'll have our picks we do have some news on some players some roster stuff that's
10:20important we will get to it's lions training camp people the players report and practice starts
10:26tomorrow we'll get to some tiger stuff a little bit later on of course we do have open lines so
10:31anything on your mind fair game 248-539-9797 if you want to answer that question who exceeds
10:38expectations starting tomorrow in training camp this year it's carson anderson gator out today 97 one
