An explanation of compensatory hyperinsulinemia — the mechanism by which increased insulin secretion maintains normal blood glucose for years before glucose itself rises. In one cohort, beta-cell function measured as a disposition index was already reduced by half to two-thirds at the point of first abnormal fasting glucose.
