00:01This will be my first time getting a wig.
00:03I'm really excited to get this burgundy color
00:05because I don't have to damage my dark hair.
00:10I can just get a different color and a different look
00:12without having to do anything to my actual hair
00:15and not, like, make that commitment.
00:20Hi, my name is Addie, and I'm the owner of the Frontal Queen
00:24in downtown L.A.
00:25People are very surprised when they come in here
00:27because they're not expecting to see a salon
00:29that looks like this.
00:30One of my favorite features of the salon is the pole.
00:34I'm a pole dancer, so it's a no-brainer for me.
00:38It was, like, one of the first things that I envisioned
00:41when I was picturing how my salon would look.
00:43I wanted to create a space that made me feel inspired, happy,
00:49and a space where my friends could come hang out
00:52and get their hair done.
00:55Devon is one of my best friends.
00:57She has never gotten a wig done before,
01:00but she's also an open person and down to experiment,
01:04so I'm putting a wig on her.
01:07Hi, my name is Devon, and today I'm getting
01:10a custom-colored burgundy wig.
01:13I usually don't do anything with my hair.
01:15I've pretty much had it black, like, undyed my whole life,
01:18but I love the burgundy color because I feel like it complements my skin tone.
01:23It's kind of, like, just a different step away from having just black hair.
01:29The wig is a black wig that I colored a very burgundy slash auburn slash red color.
01:35What I did was lift the color to a nice light brown,
01:40and then I went in with a semi-permanent color mixture of two shades of burgundy
01:45and one shade of red.
01:46I think I'm curious how she's going to hide all my hair underneath
01:51because I do have, like, really long hair already.
01:53Okay, so I've colored your wig.
01:55It came out in that beautiful burgundy color you're looking for,
01:59so I'm super excited to install it on you.
02:01How do you want me to style it?
02:02Well, I really love the strands in the front kind of look,
02:07but I'm thinking, like, maybe just to keep my hair out of my face.
02:11Okay.
02:11Something like...
02:13Like a half-up, half-down kind of thing.
02:15Yeah, that sounds good.
02:17Like, maybe some money pieces.
02:19Mmm, yeah, I love that.
02:21Okay, cool. Let's do that.
02:25Usually, I braid down my clients for wig installs,
02:30but this is Devyn's first time,
02:32and she has long, thick, beautiful hair,
02:34so what I did was decide to slick it back.
02:38Not everyone does a breakdown.
02:40Not every hair type is a breakdown appropriate for.
02:43I slicked her hair down, did the bald cap method on her,
02:48put a wig cap on, and you spray a very strong holding spray,
02:52let it dry, and cut out the excess wig cap.
02:56It protects the person's real hair under the wig install.
03:00The spray that I like to use for the bald cap method
03:02is the Got2B holding spray.
03:05It's a staple in the wig community.
03:07It really does a good job at making sure the cap is laid
03:11for the bald cap method.
03:14So, after installing the bald cap method,
03:16I'm basically trying on the wig on Devyn
03:19to make sure that the wig fits on both sides of her hairline.
03:24I want to make sure that the wig covers her sideburns.
03:27Before this process,
03:29I had already gone into the wig to pluck the hairline
03:32to replicate Devyn's hairline shape on the wig.
03:36Everyone's hairline is different.
03:37I went in with three layers of glue.
03:40Between each layer, it's really important to let the glue dry
03:43because if it doesn't dry, the install is one,
03:48not gonna stick and two, not gonna last.
03:50After the third layer dries,
03:52I'm setting down the lace on Devyn's hairline.
03:57I'm basically taking off the lace melting band
04:00and trimming off the excess lace.
04:04So, after this step is finished,
04:06I go back in with the lace melting spray
04:09and what this does is it completely melts the lace
04:13into the skin.
04:14A good one that I use is one for my brand,
04:18the Frontal Queen's Lace Melting Spray.
04:20Once this is done,
04:23I'm tying the hairline again
04:24and letting her sit under the dryer
04:26for a couple more minutes.
04:28And then after she's done drying,
04:30taking her out of the dryer,
04:32untying the lace melting band
04:34and revealing the hairline.
04:40So, once her hairline is done melting,
04:43it's really important to secure the back of the wig.
04:46So, what I'm doing is sewing down the back of the wig
04:50to the back of Devyn's ponytail
04:52that I had put under the wig cap.
04:54Once I've done this, I'm now styling the wig
04:58according to the style she wanted.
05:00To achieve this updo that I'm doing,
05:03I'm using a lot of got-to-be spray.
05:07And I'm spraying it as I go.
05:09I'm working the product into her hair in sections,
05:13spraying along, working from the back,
05:15gathering all the hair into a sleek ponytail,
05:18doing this trendy Y2K spiky style.
05:23And then for the rest of the hair,
05:25I'm pressing it out to make sure it's super straight.
05:29And it's important to use a flat iron spray
05:31during this process
05:32because it really sleeks and presses out the hair,
05:35making it super silky.
05:37And especially after color treating a wig,
05:40you want to make sure that you're protecting the wig
05:43with a heat protection spray.
05:45Devyn also wanted some money pieces
05:48and dramatic sideburns.
05:51The wig naturally is super long
05:54and no one's sideburns are that long.
05:56So what I did was trim them to match the money pieces,
06:01sprayed a bit of holding spray
06:03to make sure that the pieces are not flimsy
06:06or blowing around,
06:07and then pressed it out with a flat iron
06:10to sleek it out.
06:12I ended up adding a few bums to the end of her wig.
06:15I just thought it would look cute
06:17with the overall half-up, half-down style,
06:19and it ended up working out.
06:21All right, my love, you're all done.
06:23Oh my gosh.
06:24You look so good.
06:25Ah!
06:29It feels totally comfortable.
06:30Like, I honestly would not even think
06:33that, like, my actual hair is underneath this.
06:35And, like, when I touch here,
06:36it just feels like my own head.
06:38A lace front wig would last you two to three years.
06:43A wig install, though, would last you
06:45around two to three weeks.
06:46The maintenance process for installs is to tie down your hairline
06:51when you go to sleep, when you shower,
06:54when you put on makeup.
06:55And this is so you keep your hairline protected from oils,
07:00water, sweat, dirt.
07:02I'm in love.
07:04It looks amazing.
07:05I'm a new person.
07:07Like, you can be bored with this color.
07:08Like, you can be bored with this color.
07:08Like, this is your color.
07:09Don't go back.
07:14I feel like a video game character.
07:16I feel like a Disney princess.
07:19I didn't have plans, but now I feel like I should make some.
07:23Now you have to make some.
