00:00Nano-blading and micro-blading is very similar.
00:03The only differences are the blade sizes.
00:05So micro-blading is a blade which is very tiny and micro,
00:09but nano is much smaller than that.
00:20Hey, guys. It's Courtney.
00:21I'm here in freezing cold Dumbo, New York,
00:24to get nano-blading for the very first time.
00:26Let's see if it's worth the pain, the time, and the money.
00:30Let's go.
00:32I want to get nano-blading because for my entire life,
00:35my eyebrows have been this thin.
00:38They do not grow. I don't wax them. I don't pluck them.
00:41I don't do anything to them.
00:43I really just want to feel like more myself.
00:44I want some shape on my face, and I want thicker, fuller brows.
00:48I've never had permanent makeup on my face done,
00:51but I do have lots of tattoos,
00:52so I'm expecting the pain to be similar to a tattoo.
00:55I'm excited to speak with Christo at Braustress.
00:58I know that their work is amazing.
01:00I've been following their work for so long.
01:02I know that the nano-blade uses a smaller blade,
01:05which hopefully it will not be as painful.
01:08This is one of the best parts of my job.
01:10I get to talk to wonderful people who are in the beauty industry
01:13and highlight their work and also get to try new amazing things.
01:18I hope that this helps and provides information
01:20for other people who are also excited and are curious about nano-blading
01:24or want to make a change to their eyebrows as well.
01:32I'm Christo Cummings, and I'm the owner of Braustress Studios,
01:36located in Dunbar, Brooklyn.
01:38I've been doing micro-blading and nano-blading
01:41and freckles tattooing for seven years now.
01:43But before I started my business,
01:45I was actually a 9-1-1 operator for a few years.
01:48What inspired me to start my business was my Aunt Wendy,
01:52who was diagnosed with cancer.
01:54She kind of inspired me to do some research on micro-blading.
01:57And once I found out about it,
01:59I was in love with knowing I can help women
02:02feel more confident about their selves through their eyebrows
02:05and decided to get trained to become a micro-blading artist.
02:08The benefits of nano-blading is you get to wake up with beautiful brows
02:12every day for at least a year, sometimes even up to two years.
02:17I actually came up with that name randomly at a restaurant with a friend,
02:23and we had an amazing server, which was a waitress.
02:27And I was like, I want to do brows the way she's serving me food.
02:30I want to be a browstress.
02:32The cost for my service of nano-blading is $900,
02:35and that price usually ranges from around $500 to $2,000.
02:41Hi, Courtney.
02:42Hi, Crystal.
02:43I'm so happy you're here today.
02:44I'm so excited.
02:45So let's discuss what type of brows you're looking for today.
02:49My eyebrows are already pretty thin.
02:51They don't grow much more than what they look like now.
02:54So I just want something, yeah, a little bit thicker, fuller,
02:57fluffier, natural, fun, cute brow.
03:00Gotcha.
03:01Well, you're in good hands.
03:02I know.
03:02I got you back today.
03:03We're going to make your eyebrows look amazing.
03:05So what we'll do is create some nice little fluffy little strokes in the front,
03:10and then we'll create some strokes right here and here.
03:13So we'll fill in these areas too, but we'll focus on those areas that are much lighter.
03:18That's exactly what I was thinking.
03:19Yes.
03:23Once my clients come over to my chair, I first begin with sanitizing their eyebrows
03:28with an alcohol wipe and a baby wipe.
03:31Once the eyebrows are sanitized, I begin to map out the perfect eyebrow shape with a string
03:36and eyebrow pencil.
03:38When my client approves the eyebrows and she loves them, then we go on to picking a pigment.
03:44Matches her eyebrows perfectly.
03:46We have every color for every skin tone.
03:49There's a Fitzgerald Patrick scale that a lot of artists use, and it scales from one to six.
03:55One being the fairest, lightest complexion and six being more on the darker melanin side.
04:02So I have every color for every tone.
04:06Once my client has the eyebrow of their dreams and we've already mapped out their eyebrows,
04:13I begin to numb their eyebrows.
04:15The numbing takes about 30 minutes for it to work.
04:20I'm hoping that I will have a natural look.
04:22It will really help to define and shape my face and give my face a little bit more structure.
04:27I'm kind of envious of all the girlies who have thicker, fuller brows.
04:34Once the client is numb, we begin to start the service.
04:37And I usually start by creating an outline.
04:40I typically like to start at my client's tail and arch.
04:45I begin to draw out little tiny nano strokes on their eyebrows, creating the perfect shape that matches their face.
04:53You'll see me throughout the process mask with ink, wipe it off so that the ink can sink into the
04:59skin.
05:03I like to say that I have a pretty high pain tolerance, but when that numbing cream wore off, I
05:08felt it.
05:09So I would say the pain on a scale of one to ten is probably like maybe a 5.5.
05:13I like to look at my client's eyebrows and mimic what their actual natural eyebrows do in the front.
05:19So if they have more of a palm tree shape, if they have more of a curve to the eyebrows,
05:24if they have more spiky,
05:25bushy brows towards the front, I'll follow that.
05:29When I see that the eyebrows are the desired shape and look, I may give my client the mirror just
05:35to see if she wants to add any tweaks or anything to it.
05:38If she wants a longer tail, we'll add a longer tail.
05:41If she wants them a little bit bigger, we'll make them a little bit bigger.
05:44If she thinks they're perfect, I'll go in and add my little tweaks to it myself and then we're done.
05:50Here you go, Courtney.
05:51So I'm going to show you your eyebrows.
05:53Let me know if you like them.
05:55Here you go.
05:56Here you go.
06:01Wow, this is so good.
06:03It is so natural.
06:06For the first seven days, you definitely want to avoid swimming, sweating, tanning, and working out.
06:14You want to avoid washing your face and brows together.
06:16You don't want the germs from your face or makeup to kind of go down to your brows.
06:20Use a makeup wipe.
06:22Wipe off your face.
06:23Then wash your face with your fingers.
06:25If a little bit of water drips onto it, that's fine.
06:27So I'm going to give you a little ointment and a little spray bottle.
06:29Just take the spray and you'll spray the Q-tip maybe about five times.
06:34And then you'll clean the brows gently just like this for two weeks.
06:39I feel like a bad bitch.
06:42I feel great.
06:44I'm so excited, so happy about my brows.
06:47I just can't wait to never have to fill in my eyebrows with a pencil ever again.
06:53Well, at least for the next two years.
06:54I was very surprised about how fast it was.
06:57That's a shout out to Crystal because she's the best at what she does.
07:00I love working with black women, especially in the beauty space.
07:03She understood what I needed.
07:05I didn't even show her a picture of what I wanted.
07:06She just got it.
07:08It was quick.
07:09It was easy.
07:10There was a little bit of pain.
07:12Afterwards, even now, I feel like something happened to me, but it's not painful at all or uncomfortable.
07:16I feel like it's enhanced my features.
07:18I just feel alive, awake, and confident.
07:22I think that if you are unhappy with how your brows look and you want to make an investment in
07:27yourself, the $900 is 100% worth it.
07:30It lasts two years.
07:31If you're getting a curated service, it's worth the $900 price tag.
07:35Well, there is a theory and a myth that microblading is better for people with drier skin or combination skin,
07:42but depending on the technique of the artist, it can be good for all skin types if the artist is
07:48that good.
07:48I am that good.
07:49I'm the best.
07:50The day that the client receives the eyebrows, they look amazing.
07:53This is the brows of her dreams.
07:55The second day, they're going to be dark.
07:57The third day, they're going to be dark.
07:59The fourth and fifth day, they're still going to be dark.
08:01The sixth day is when they start to go through that traumatic stage of flaking.
08:05It's normal if you go through it.
08:07It's normal if you don't.
08:08Everybody's skin is totally different.
08:09Then the eyebrows begin to get a little bit lighter.
08:12All right, this is officially one full week with my nano-bladed brows.
08:19They haven't flaked.
08:20They haven't peeled.
08:20It's been so easy to take care of.
08:22I think they look so good.
08:24I 100% think it's worth the time, the effort, and the money.
08:28I would definitely recommend it to a friend.
08:30I love that I'm able now to just wake up and go.
08:34No filling them in.
08:36I just brush them up and go all my day.
08:38I'm so, so happy and so grateful to Browstress for their amazing work.
08:44Around the third week, I would say, the color starts to come back in.
08:48So during that time is where the client would see,
08:51okay, I want to go a little bit darker.
08:52I want to go a little bit fuller the next time I come back in.
08:56And then they'll return six weeks later for their second touch-up.
08:59Even if they love it, I feel like there's always one thing I have to like add to it.
09:03So I'll make them come back.
09:05But no, it isn't mandatory, but I like it to be mandatory.
09:08So I tell them it's mandatory.
