00:21who is going to remove one of the many bumps on my head. Will it be worth the time, the
00:26money,
00:26the pain? I'm a little nervous, a lot nervous, but let's go find out.
00:36I am at Dr. Day's office today to get one of the many cysts on my scalp removed. The first
00:42one I
00:42got was back when I was 16 and I remember rushing to the dermatologist being like, is this cancerous?
00:47Like, why is there a bump on my scalp? And they're not harmful. They're just kind of there. And over
00:52the years, I've just gotten more and more with my hair thinning. When I pull my hair back, you can
00:57actually see the bumps. So I want to get this done. I'm only getting one taken out today. I didn't
01:03really do anything to prepare for this. You know, I'm definitely a little nervous, but with my
01:07consultation that I already had with Dr. Day, I feel really good and confident going in. Oh,
01:13it's a little bit more extensive. I do have to get stitches with this and come back in a week.
01:17But
01:18again, the way she describes it, it makes it feel a lot less scary than it is.
01:24I'm Dr. Doris Day. I'm a board certified dermatologist in New York City. I've been a
01:30board certified dermatologist for over 20 years. Today, we're going to do a procedure called
01:35cyst removal. A cyst is an outpouching of the follicle. So every follicle has some oil glands
01:42at the bottom. But sometimes as they get inflamed over time, it can create a sack. And that sack
01:48will then collect all the protein and all of the elements that the follicle makes, and it can grow.
01:55The nice thing about this procedure is that the way we do it is we don't have to shave the
01:59scalp.
01:59Just make a small incision to preserve the hair follicles and minimize any hair loss on the other
02:04side. Cysts on the scalp are very common. But when they get bigger and they prove themselves to be
02:11problematic in that patients don't like the way they feel on their scalp or they get in the way
02:15of haircuts or even intimacy. They feel self-conscious about having a bump in their head. Those cysts can
02:23easily be removed. Hi. Great to see you again. You too. So the cyst is right here. Yes, that's the
02:30one
02:30that's been bothering me the most. Okay. So when I feel it, it's mobile under my fingers. So hopefully it'll
02:35just pop out. If you want, I can show it to you when I take it out. I do want
02:38to see it. Okay, good.
02:39What causes these? Because I have about like seven, I think. Yeah, it's, I blame some relatives.
02:46Of course. There's a genetic component to it for sure. And sometimes it's trauma. Sometimes it's the
02:52way the hair grows. Sometimes it's just, we don't have an answer. It's just life. But there is a genetic
02:57component to it. Why do you usually only do one during a treatment? Most people really want one at a
03:02time
03:02because it's an experience for them that they need to get through. Okay. All right. Let's get
03:08started. I'm going to mark it with a little marking pen, a blue marking pen. Then I'll numb it. We'll
03:16let that numbing sit for about five to seven minutes because it has a little bit of epinephrine in it,
03:21which constricts blood vessels and makes it a faster, easier procedure and also makes it not painful for
03:27you even afterwards because that numbing lasts for a little while. Then I have a little, a little blade
03:34and I'll just make a very, very small incision. And when I do that, I'm always looking at the hair
03:40follicles and trying to preserve them. Hopefully it'll pop out. Otherwise I'll just help it come
03:46out and we'll remove it, put it in a bottle because I usually send it to the lab for pathology.
03:51Even
03:52though I know what it is, it's always good to have peace of mind. That result will come back in
03:57about a week. And then I'll just put in a few stitches. The stitches will be blue because I
04:03want to be able to find them when I need to remove them. You'll have two or three blue streaks.
04:09Don't
04:09pull them out. Just leave them there. Enjoy the blue. And then when you come back, I'll just remove
04:14them. No special care. That is crazy. You can see there's really no hair. No, not at all. You did
04:26great.
04:27How do you feel? I feel fine. Okay, good. That was so easy. So you can wash everything as usual.
04:33I'd probably
04:34wait till tomorrow, let it sit for a day. We're going to give you a prescription for an antibiotic ointment
04:38and
04:39then just put a little bit on twice a day and then forget about it. And that's just an antibiotic
04:43ointment.
04:43It's it's for my own comfort that you're putting something on. But this is an area that it's going
04:48to be fine. There's I don't expect any infections or any problems. But if anything doesn't feel right,
04:53you let me know. And you only needed one stitch because it was a very small incision. So that stitch
04:59will be able to find easily because I made it a bit longer. And then you'll come back in a
05:03week.
05:03I'll take that out. Good to go. It really was not as bad as I expected. It happened really quickly.
05:10I don't
05:10know why I expected it to take much longer. But the little guy just popped on out. I do think
05:16I would do this
05:16again. A lot of the ones that I have on my head are pretty small and don't really bother me.
05:21But I do have
05:23two two big boys right back here. So maybe someday down the line, I would do it again. It wasn't
05:29really that
05:30dramatic that I would say no. Yeah, I might hold off on the slick back ponies until this fully heals.
05:37But yeah, I'm excited to not have that bumpy popping out anymore. It's been a few days since I got
05:44my
05:45bump removed. And it's so wild. I can feel the stitch just it's like a little string right there. But
05:54the
05:54recovery has been so easy. I just put on the antibiotic twice a day. And yeah, I've been able to
06:01like
06:01work out, do normal things, put products in my hair. It's funny, I'm like sitting here and I'm like feeling
06:08these, the two like really big ones that I have over here. And I'm like, maybe I will, I will,
06:18I'll do this again.
06:19Because like, I don't know, it's kind of nice not having that bump there anymore. But I get my stitch
06:26out in two days. And then we're good. I just got my stitch removed. I actually forgot to film it,
06:33but it happened so fast. There wasn't even anything to film. But she said it was feeling
06:38really nicely. It's still gonna take about a week to like fully repair. But yeah, I'm addicted. I want to
06:44go get another.
