00:08Hi, I'm Maritza Medina and today I'm on Beauty Evolution and will be transformed into Selena
00:13Quintanilla. Selena has been such a huge part of my identity and not just my identity but for so
00:20many Latinx mujeres. She literally continues to be a source of inspiration for so many people
00:27around the world now to see her legacy blow up like this it like warms my heart like it makes
00:34me
00:34emotional. I think seeing Selena Quintanilla speaking both English and Spanish it must have
00:41resonated with me at some level at that age but you know it's the years afterwards that I really
00:48realized like wow like she kind of looks like me or her hair and she kind of looks like my
00:53mom and
00:53she's speaking both languages and navigating these both these cultures the Mexican culture and the
00:59American culture and it was just amazing to see that and before we get to the transformation don't
01:06forget to subscribe below. This first look is from a photo shoot at El Dorado Ranch in Houston. Texas
01:16was the birthplace of Tejano or Texan Mexican music. It's funny because growing up I listened to Tejano
01:30music all the time and danced to it and I didn't even realize it was called Tejano music I didn't
01:37know
01:37it was a genre I just knew it was music that was played at home and like family parties in
01:42the neighborhood.
01:52this look to me is very much a combination of Mexican influence with 80s late 80s vibe of American pop
02:02culture
02:07very much Chicana vibes here and I love it
02:16to me my Mexican American heritage is such a huge part of my identity especially because I grew up in
02:23LA
02:24everywhere you go you feel it in the city now that I live in New York City is something that
02:29I carry
02:29with me everywhere I don't even think I realized how Mexican I was until I moved over here
02:48okay oh my god I kind of love it
03:14the next look is from the 1994 grammy award show Selena won best Mexican American album which marked the
03:22first time a female Tejano artist won the category I think Selena Quintanilla's grammy look is beyond
03:30iconic personally I try to imitate the look like throughout the years for my quinceanera for my prom just at
03:38any point I think about it as a like a future wedding look
03:51music
04:04she spoke English and Spanish that was just a moment we all remember the photos of her kissing her grammy
04:11and
04:11looking so happy and her win was the community's win a hundred percent as well
04:46I can look oh my god oh my god but I'm I'm I'm just the eyebrows I'm really stuck on
04:56the eyebrows
04:57and the lips and just the nighties vibe
05:03I'm into it
05:26finally one of her more iconic looks is a bedazzled cap and bustier
05:31Debussy is important and iconic because in a way it was a form of resistance, something
05:36that's not new to Latinas.
05:38It wasn't like a sexualized thing, it signified her independence, it marked a new phase of
05:43her career, one where she was, I think, even more empowered.
05:48I think something that people don't realize is that, yes, Selena Quintanilla was beautiful
05:53and talented and represented so much to so many people, but her life had such a huge
05:59impact in American culture.
06:01After her death, the coverage that it received made People Magazine realize there was a bilingual
06:07audience and they created People en Español.
06:10That's huge.
06:13When Selena passed away, I was young.
06:16I was young, my sister was young, but we remember, we remember the moment.
06:20I remember us being sad, I remember it seeing on the news.
06:23I remember the reaction of the neighborhood, of my tías, of everyone.
06:29Just, we couldn't believe it.
06:31We were shocked.
06:42Oh my god.
06:43I love it.
06:44I love it.
06:46Oh my god.
06:46The cap is so perfect.
07:00I swear to God I feel so connected to her and there's so many people that feel so connected
07:06to her and I just think that she was such a special individual and you can feel that through
07:12her music that stands the test of time you can feel that through any interviews or anything
07:17and the way she moves and the way people speak of her still to this day I was just saying
07:35thank you
07:36thank you for starting that path all for continuing the path for Latinx mujeres everywhere so gracias
07:44thank you and gracias for watching my transformation to Selena Quintanilla to watch more videos click
