00:01It's that tiny little crack in your self-esteem that can make it crumble.
00:06What an insecurity means to me is something that makes you want to hide yourself
00:11and stops you from really seeing your own beauty.
00:18I've always been really insecure about the size and shape of my eyes.
00:23For Chinese culture, people always want to aim for big and round eyes,
00:27preferably with a crease on your lids.
00:31So a couple months after I was born, I developed a birthmark,
00:34and nobody actually knows where it came from,
00:36but I was never really conscious of it until other people started pointing it out to me.
00:42I was always called like a lot of nicknames, like sleepy pig or squinty eyes.
00:48My birthmark pretty much covers my entire body.
00:51It's all over my stomach, under my arm, on my neck, on my chest.
00:55When I was 15 or 16, I seriously considered getting blepharoplasty,
01:00which is a surgery that opens your eyes and gives you that crease in your eyelid.
01:06To fake a crease in my eyes, there's a glue that you can apply on your eyelid, stickers, tape.
01:13Why couldn't I have normal skin like everybody else?
01:16People's reactions were always kind of like, what is that?
01:19And now whenever people do comment on it, they're actually always complimenting me,
01:24so that's a nice feeling.
01:25I remember my teacher saying that, yeah, you may have really tiny eyes,
01:30but they know how to talk.
01:31Now I feel really confident about how I look.
01:34I would love to be photographed when I'm in the middle of laughing,
01:38and that's when my eyes don't necessarily look huge, but I don't care as much,
01:43and it captures the moment where I felt really happy or natural.
01:48It actually is something that makes me special.
01:50It's making me stand out in a good way.
