The federal government has defended the rollout of a new national emergency warning system which will send alerts to mobile phones. Federal emergency management minister Kristy McBain spoke earlier ahead of her meeting in Melbourne saying next week's test is a crucial next step.

00:01The National Test is a significant project milestone.
00:05It will demonstrate the full speed, volume and capability of AusAlert.
00:10The National Test will assess system-wide performance,
00:14checking the system can broadcast at scale to compatible devices
00:18in near real-time without network congestion.
00:20The National Test also provides an opportunity for Australians
00:24to familiarise themselves with AusAlert
00:26before alerts are sent during local or national disasters,
00:29including natural hazards such as bushfires, floods or cyclones,
00:33or other security threats.
00:36AusAlert is a potentially life-saving technology.
00:39It has been delivered by the Australian Government
00:42because we know that no one jurisdiction had the ability
00:46to deliver a system of this scale and complexity on its own.
00:50And I want to thank the states and territories
00:52for their ongoing involvement in this project.
00:54It's really important to point out, as Minister Ward did,
00:58that this is another tool in the toolkit
01:00for emergency service organisations.
01:02Existing warning channels, such as websites, radio, social media,
01:07television, remain instrumental in the safety of all Australians.
01:11We'll be running AusAlert alongside the existing emergency alert system
01:15for this high-risk weather season
01:17as we continue to work with emergency services
01:19on the AusAlert rollout.
01:22On safety, if receiving an AusAlert test will disrupt you
01:26or cause you and your family to feel unsafe,
01:29we ask that you turn off your mobile device
01:32or switch them to aeroplane mode before the scheduled test time.

01:42for at least 24 hours after the test.
