00:00Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he had spoken to U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday
00:04and told reporters the two leaders had agreed to intensify trade negotiations.
00:09Carney made the comment a day after Trump's latest terrorist threat against Canada.
00:15Look, we have a situation where the American tariffs, the 338 tariffs, will come into effect in 29 days.
00:25And we will look at all options in terms of how we would respond if they do come into effect.
00:31That's part of what we'll be discussing with Premiers.
00:35Also, in parallel, as I just said, that I'd spoken with the President, we agreed to intensify discussions.
00:41We'll begin that right away.
00:43And this is part of the negotiation.
00:46So the first objective is to get a comprehensive agreement that benefits, obviously, both countries,
00:52that's consistent with KUSMA, KUSMA as it is and KUSMA as it will be, and we'll work towards that.
01:01But in parallel, when I say we will do whatever it takes and keep all options, obviously, it's a comprehensive
01:09agreement.
01:10Well, we're at the table.
01:12We'll be having those more intense discussions.
01:15And, you know, what the issue has been for us has been a comprehensive agreement.
01:22We understand the U.S. approach to strategic sectors, what they call strategic sectors.
01:27They are strategic sectors, but under their definition, 232 definitions, that's aluminum, that's forest products, that's steel,
01:35that's automobiles, pharmaceuticals, copper, others.
01:38But those first four being the most important for the Canadian economy.
01:42And that we don't want a partial agreement.
01:46We want something that addresses those sectors as well, so that there's a viable approach going forward, in our view.
01:54On Monday, Trump unveiled 50 percent tariffs on a wide range of imports from Canada
01:59in response to what the U.S. administration called its discriminatory treatment of American-made cars, alcohol, and dairy goods,
02:06threatening a new front in global trade war.
02:09In slapping import taxes on goods ranging from wine to cement and also icy hockey gear,
02:14Trump invoked Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930,
02:19which permits the president to impose punitive tariffs of up to 50 percent against trading partners deemed to have discriminated
02:27against U.S. goods.
02:28that marked the law's first known usage in nearly a century of existence.
