00:13Is already wrong. Because there's one hidden machine deciding the future of every faith.
00:20And once you see it, the news stops surprising you.
00:23By the end of this, you'll understand exactly how it works.
00:27Here's something almost everyone believes.
00:30That the world is slowly leaving religion behind.
00:33And in a lot of places, that's exactly what's happening.
00:37Churches emptying. Surveys filling up with people who tick no religion.
00:42But step back and look at the whole planet, and the picture flips.
00:46The share of humanity that follows a religion isn't shrinking.
00:50It's holding, and by some measures, climbing.
00:54Now ask the obvious next question.
00:56If religion is growing, which one is growing the fastest?
01:01Most people have a guess ready.
01:02And most people picture the same map.
01:05The Middle East. Deserts.
01:07A story that lives mostly in one corner of the world.
01:11Here's the first crack in that picture.
01:13Today, the largest share of the world's Muslims doesn't live in the Middle East at all.
01:19Roughly six in ten live across the Asia-Pacific.
01:23Indonesia, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh.
01:26And the religion you might call Western, Christianity, is quietly leaving the West.
01:32More Christians now live across Africa, Asia, and Latin America than in Europe and North America.
01:39And Sub-Saharan Africa has already passed Europe as the place with the most Christians on Earth.
01:46So the map in your head is already out of date.
01:49The question feels simple.
01:51The answer is going to be stranger than you think.
01:54So let's go to the numbers, not opinions, the data.
01:59The biggest study of its kind tracks the whole world, decade by decade.
02:04And between 2010 and 2020, one religion grew more than every other religion on Earth, combined.
02:12Islam added 347 million people in ten years.
02:18More than Christianity, the unaffiliated, Hinduism, everyone else added together.
02:24Now, here's where most explanations stop.
02:27They give you that number and let you fill in the reason yourself.
02:31And the reason people usually reach for is conversion, the idea that millions are switching faiths.
02:37But the data says something quieter and far more interesting.
02:42At the global level, almost none of that growth comes from people converting in or out.
02:48So if it isn't conversion driving the fastest growing religion in the world, then what is?
02:55And there's a second question hiding underneath the first.
02:58We keep saying fastest growing like it means one clean thing, one winner.
03:04What if it doesn't?
03:06So, follow the mechanism.
03:08It comes down to two numbers.
03:11First is fertility.
03:13A Muslim woman has, on average, around 2.9 children.
03:18The average, for everyone else, about 2.2.
03:22That gap sounds small.
03:24Over a generation, it isn't.
03:27The second number is age.
03:30The world's Muslims have a median age of just 24.
03:33For everyone else, 33.
03:37Put those together.
03:39A young population, having more children.
03:42Those children grow up and have children of their own.
03:46That's the engine.
03:47Not conversion.
03:49Demographics.
03:50Births minus deaths, compounding across decades.
03:54Now watch what that same engine does to Christianity.
03:58Because it tells two opposite stories at once.
04:01Christianity is still growing.
04:04It added 122 million people in that decade.
04:09And yet, its share of the world shrank.
04:12From about 31% down to 29%.
04:16How can a religion grow by millions and still fall behind?
04:21Because the rest of the world had babies faster.
04:24And in the places where Christianity is oldest, it's thinning.
04:29Look at Latin America.
04:31Across six major countries, the Catholic share dropped by nine points or more in a single decade.
04:38Brazil and Chile, once overwhelmingly Catholic, are now under half.
04:44Where did those people go?
04:46Some to other churches.
04:48Many to no religion at all.
04:50Which brings us to the group nobody expects.
04:54The unaffiliated.
04:55The nuns.
04:57In the West, they're the fastest growing group of all.
05:00So here's the puzzle.
05:02If the nuns are exploding across the rich world, why don't they win globally?
05:09Same engine.
05:10Reversed.
05:11The nuns are concentrated in old, wealthy countries, where almost nobody is having children.
05:18They grow by switching.
05:21They lose by math.
05:23So now you're holding several pieces at once.
05:26Islam growing by births.
05:29Christianity growing in number, but shrinking in share.
05:32The nuns rising in the West, but stalling on the planet.
05:36And every one of those is the same engine running at a different speed.
05:41Fertility and age.
05:44Which means there should be a test.
05:46If the engine is real, then somewhere a religion should be running it in reverse,
05:52and actually going backwards.
05:53There is one.
05:56And almost nobody sees it coming.
05:59Buddhism.
06:01Between 2010 and 2020, it was the only major religion on Earth to shrink in absolute numbers.
06:09Down 19 million people.
06:13Why?
06:14The same two numbers flipped.
06:16Buddhism is concentrated in East Asia, the fastest aging region in the world.
06:23A median age around 40.
06:25Fertility far below replacement.
06:28And it's not converting people away.
06:31It's aging out.
06:32In South Korea, roughly six in ten people raised Buddhist no longer call themselves Buddhist.
06:40In Japan, about half.
06:42So now the engine is proven.
06:45It builds Islam.
06:47It hollows the West.
06:49It shrinks Buddhism.
06:51One mechanism, every direction.
06:53Which forces the real question back to the surface.
06:58With all these pieces moving at once, Islam, Christianity, the nuns, Buddhism, which one is actually growing the fastest?
07:08And here, finally, is the twist.
07:11The question doesn't have one answer.
07:14It has four.
07:15And all four are true.
07:17By total people added, the fastest is Islam.
07:21By share of the whole planet, still Islam.
07:24By active conversion, it's a Christian movement.
07:28Pentecostalism, spreading church by church.
07:31By growth inside the rich world, it's the nuns.
07:34Four metrics, four winners.
07:37No single answer.
07:39That's not a dodge.
07:41That is the answer.
07:43Pick how you measure, and you pick who wins.
07:47The question was never really about religion.
07:50It was about the machine underneath.
07:52Births.
07:53Age.
07:55Time.
07:55Now you can see it.
07:58And now you can explain it to anyone.
