00:14more complex and unpredictable, technology is playing an important role, helping business
00:19and to improve efficiencies, to put resilience at best and the visibility from AI and predictive
00:26tools and analytics to digital innovations. The future of logistics is being reshaped at
00:32unprecedented pace. So today we will explore how Harvey is driving that transformation and
00:37why Malaysia has been chosen and the fourth in the world and the only and the first one
00:42in the Asian region. And joining me today is Reto Sahli, the Chief Digital Information
00:48Officer at Harvey. Today which happened to be in Malaysia in a very short period and I'm
00:53so privileged to have you in the show this morning. So Reto, welcome to Niaga Awani.
00:58How are you? Thank you very much, Hafiz. It's a pleasure. It's a privilege and thanks
01:02a lot for the invitation again. Thank you for your time. I saw you a lot online. You've
01:08been talking a lot about the talent pool and why you choose Malaysia and everything else.
01:13So we want to go deeper about that. So the first thing, I think everybody needs to know
01:17what is Harvey Tech Hub and why you choose Malaysia as the first country in this Asian region.
01:24Let me perhaps just start with Harvey. So Harvey is a privately held company. So Harvey is a supply
01:32chain service company specialized in QSR. QSR is quick service restaurants. So imagine McDonald's
01:40and others. So we do pretty much anything from sourcing to procurement to logistics, warehousing,
01:49distribution and the entire planning process around this end-to-end supply chain process. So
01:57that's what Harvey is doing. We as Harvey Tech Hub, we are integrated into Harvey. We are part of Harvey.
02:05We are the technology function for Harvey. We are responsible for innovation, for running our systems,
02:16for having an end-to-end supply chain. We are responsible for planning and analytics platforms,
02:26etc. So imagine everything technology and technology innovation. What made me more, you know, so invested
02:34and so look forward because you choose Malaysia as the first in this Asian and to try to cover the
02:40APEC country. And so the big question is why Malaysia? What do you see in Malaysia? What is the full
02:46factor that you choose Malaysia at the first place? That's a very good question actually and it's very,
02:50very, very easy to answer. When we started creating the concept of the technology hubs, so we were clear
02:59that we need around the sun model, so 24-7. So therefore Chicago is our home base that was set.
03:08We needed
03:09something in Europe. Krakow is our GBS location that was set. Lisbon was our third location. And then
03:18with the analysis that we did around the location, there were 120 dimensions that we were looking at. One of
03:27them,
03:27and a very, very important one was the talent pipeline or the talent pool. And that's how we have chosen
03:36Malaysia.
03:37We also consciously choose a market where we have a business in, where we have our logistics business,
03:45a very well-established business. And, you know, when you look at Malaysia, the universities that you're having,
03:53the multicultural nature of the country, the talent pool per se, this is very attractive.
04:02So that was an easy decision for us. Also the support that you're getting from the Malaysian government,
04:11institutions like MDAC, etc., is very, very good. And that was very convincing for us to choose Malaysia and KL
04:23as our location.
04:24I feel honoured and flattered by your words because why you choose Malaysia in the first place. Because you speak
04:30about the talent pool.
04:31We are a developing country, a growing country. So definitely we have a lot of talents that we have
04:37and we could provide for you. But what kind of talent that you're looking for so that we can be
04:42prepared?
04:43And what kind of really you are looking for? And this is the talent that you need to feed and
04:50be able to work with your company.
04:52Yeah. So it's pretty much everything technology. So infrastructure and operations. We need cloud architects.
05:04We need cloud engineers. We need network engineers and network architects. We need end user services people.
05:12We need business partnering. We need application development. We need security. We need project managers.
05:19We need program managers. We need program managers. Like it's the full array. But, you know,
05:25there is obviously the capabilities and the functions that we are looking for. But even more importantly,
05:31is the profile of the personalities that we are looking for. So we are standing for collaboration. We are
05:42standing for camaraderie. So I very often say we are just a bunch of great people doing great
05:49things for a great company. And, you know, this is this is actually in the center of what we are
05:56we are looking for in talent. Collaborative, open-minded, creative, innovative people that like to do
06:05great things for a great company. Yeah. And also for the country like Malaysia. So you have mentioned a lot
06:12about how this is what what how this is all about. So coming to the next question, what kind of
06:18supply
06:18chain and logistic innovation that Harvey tech hub delivering, as you mentioned, just know quite a few.
06:23And is it actually you leveraging technologies from such as AI predictive analytics and IoT internet of
06:31team to transform your supply chain of operation and improve the customers outcome overall?
06:37Absolutely. So tech hub is a global concept. Malaysia is part of that global tech hub concept. So we are
06:45doing all of this in all the tech hub locations. So we are actually leveraging AI already today,
06:54particularly in our planning and analytics organization, but also internally planning cash flow,
07:00planning planning, planning financials, etc, etc, etc. So automation is a big thing for us because it's
07:10bringing efficiencies automation in warehouses and automation in our internal functions. Then it's machine
07:20learning, it's AI to some degree and analytics. Analytics is at the core of a supply chain business
07:33because that allows us to predict the future. If we can predict the future, we're going to win in the
07:39marketplace and our customers going to win in the market. Yes. Reto, I cannot help myself and I cannot
07:45escape myself from asking you about the how complex and unpredictable the supply chains nowadays with
07:51what happened in geopolitics about the crisis in the Middle East in Ukraine or Russia, whatever you name
07:57it. There's a lot of crisis going on today. So how do you actually to say be more resilient and
08:06be able to
08:07deliver as good as possible? Even when you see the crisis that going on today is almost like we couldn't
08:16find when that will be end. So how do you see this and how you take on this method? You
08:24see, I think the
08:25world has changed indeed. When you look at all the conflicts, the wars and everything that we have
08:31in this world and it's very unfortunate. That's my personal view, obviously. So everything has been
08:42disrupted and everything is changing. Javi has been lucky enough, like from the Middle Eastern,
08:53from a supply chain perspective, we have not been too much impacted. We have been impacted from a
09:00customer sentiment perspective. We are a US company. We are servicing US companies. So that's an
09:09implication. I think this is not going to go away. This is going to become the new normal. So I
09:18think
09:18the requirement for the supply chain of the future is speed and agility. Speed and agility and resilience,
09:27obviously, or equals resilience. That's a very important thing. And that's a very, very important
09:32thing. So how can we plan and re-plan much, much, much, much faster or even on an ongoing basis
09:40versus
09:41having static, status quo plans? I think that's the success criteria. I love the ideas and the response.
09:50And if we go ahead, the time is moving fast. The world is changing. The system is changing. How do
09:57you see
09:57in the next future? How the supply chain is changing and how do you keep with that? And why
10:04how Malaysia is prepared for this? And of course, to supply in the Asia-Pacific?
10:10I think supply chains are going to change fundamentally and radically,
10:16not only because of the geopolitical conflicts or supply chain disruptions, but also because
10:22of technology innovation, like this AI thing out there. And I don't want to call it a hype
10:30or a bubble or something. It could be a little overheated right now still, but it is real. So
10:39it's going to be the next revolution after the internet, in my view. This is going to have a big,
10:45big impact on how we run supply chains, how we run operations end to end, because all of a sudden,
10:53we need to figure out how human and machine is collaborating. So the collaboration is not just
11:00human and human, right? And we haven't, we haven't even figured that out, like as a global,
11:05like as global citizens. But now it's about to figure out how human and machine operate together.
11:14I'll give you an example, like when we, when we now implement AI or want to implement AI,
11:22we need to reconsider the operating model. So in your org chart, you have agents,
11:29and you're going to have humans and humans monitoring agents and agents monitoring humans
11:34and collaborating with humans, et cetera, et cetera. I think that's going to be, that's going to be
11:38the challenge. And at the same time, it's going to be the trick for, uh, for efficient artificial
11:44intelligence. Don't you think that AI will replace human after and will make some big change in supply
11:51change? There will always be, uh, my, my view is there will always be human. Um, so, so because,
12:01because of the, the interpretation of the sentiments of, you know, I think we're just going to see a shift
12:07where more rule-based work or transactional work is, this is going to be taken over, uh, by, uh, by,
12:14by agents. Um, so I don't see that, you know, like that, that huge loss of jobs, uh, globally. I
12:26think there
12:26is just going to be a massive shift, um, of, of jobs and skill profiles, uh, that, uh, that we're
12:33going
12:33to see. And, uh, you know, you asked me, uh, what's the, what's the impact on, on Malaysia, on the
12:39talent
12:39pool, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. I think that's going to be the impact. So we're going to see
12:43new
12:43roles that we never thought of, um, that's going to evolve and that's going to come to life, uh, just
12:51to, to take, uh, take into, into account that we live in a, in an AI, in an AI world.
12:57So speaking of
12:58massive transformations and changing that, we, we, we speak a lot about that. How do you see, as you choose
13:04Malaysia, how do you see Malaysia can be able to, uh, play an important role, what role can be played
13:09by Malaysian and the talents in Malaysia, uh, to make sure you catch and achieve your, um, end goal
13:17in this company? You know, like in, in, in any other or any other continent, uh, you know, it's about
13:25being flexible and agile when it comes to education. So universities and all institutions, they need to
13:31adopt to the new, new realities and really create the talent pool, uh, with generation Z and generation
13:38alpha creating a talent pool that is future fed and future ready. And, uh, you know, I think this
13:44is happening, uh, very well in, in, in, in Malaysia. Uh, we, uh, we also look for connections to universities
13:53and, uh, to, to other educational institutions. Uh, so, so that's, uh, that's, that's happening very well
14:01in Malaysia. So, so the digital quotient is actually relatively high, um, particularly with generation
14:09C and generation, uh, generation A. From your POV, do you think Malaysia is, um, ready, I might say,
14:18or maybe will become a leading digital and supply chain innovation in your POV? Hmm. That's a crystal
14:26ball question. I would say, uh, you, you, you know, uh, uh, I, uh, I, I couldn't answer, give you
14:33a
14:34clear answer because it's, it's the future. Uh, we don't know. Uh, I think Malaysia is doing everything
14:40to be in the poor, in a good position, uh, to, uh, to, to, to, to really, to, to, to
14:47get there or,
14:47or, or, or have a chance to, to, to, to be amongst the top, top player. Uh, particularly when you
14:53look at
14:54the picture of SCA, I think, uh, the, the progress in Malaysia over the past 10, 15 years has just
15:02been humongous. Uh, I've been living in Singapore. Uh, I, I know Asia relatively well, um, you know,
15:10but seeing what has happened here in Malaysia, in KL particularly, it's just amazing.
15:17So, um, I mean, you play important role in Harvey Tech Hub, and this might be your last question,
15:23which is about, um, your footnote to the people who are listening and watching right now. Uh,
15:28what is your words to them so that the, the Malaysia is being lucky enough to be chosen as your,
15:34the fourth country in ASEAN. And what's your take on this so that people will aware that you
15:40actually play important role and Malaysia has been chosen as a place as a country that also will be part
15:46of
15:46the, the things that, um, play important to supply change, to goods, to everything in, in, in the world.
15:55So you, you see, uh, I, I think my, my, my, my final note would be, um, you know,
16:01we are in a pole position here. We have all the ingredients and everything, uh, that we need in Malaysia.
16:06Uh, Harvey as a supply chain, uh, service company is building round about 140 roles in Malaysia,
16:15which is a big investment, a massive investment. We, we do absolutely believe in this market and so do
16:22other industries and, and, and other companies. So, uh, let's, let's just do it, right?
16:29I'm, I'm looking forward for that. So you enjoy Malaysia as of now?
16:32Oh, I, I love Malaysia. We have been here for, uh, yeah, we have been here many times now leading
16:37up to,
16:38uh, to, to this point now when we are opening our tech hub at Merdeka 118, uh, on the 25th
16:45of November.
16:46So we were on the construction site today. Construction has started. Uh, we are all geared up and we are
16:53super
16:53thrilled, uh, to get this started. So you're leaving Malaysia today? You're leaving Malaysia by today,
16:58right? And then Malaysia, I'm leaving Malaysia in about four hours. All right.
